  Going to his own room first, he showered and changed before heading to the meeting room. As he had expected, Teresa, Flicker, Oak, and several others were in heated discussion about how to handle the situation.

  “Has anything changed?” He asked.

  “Yes, they abandoned the weapon and hastily left the area.” Flicker admitted.

  “Razar must have a way with words.” He observed. Everyone chuckled. “Do we have a way to contain the nuclear material?”

  “We do. Our engineer managed to make an energy containment field. Once the devices are inside you simply turn it on. We even have some protective gear for whoever takes the mission.” Teresa said.

  “Have we selected a place to deposit the material?” He questioned.

  “We actually have. There’s a place already off limits called The Ghost comet. It’s not a comet and it’s caught orbiting a planet that can’t support life. The material trapped in the device can be shot to comet. It’s magnetic and the device has enough metal to be attracted to it. All we need is a volunteer or two.” Teresa explained.

  “Elm and I will go. Is a fighter prepped?”

  “Are you sure?” Teresa asked. Flicker said nothing because he knew they were the best choices too.

  “I am. We are tougher than humans so we at least have a chance of surviving.” Flicker nodded, but Teresa looked doubtful. Either Flicker hadn’t shared Phoenix Strengths with her, or she found it impossible to believe they could survive something as deadly to most kinds as radiation.

  The fighter was ready and they were in their safety suits. Everything was loaded and he wanted to leave before Angel woke. He was trying to save her some anguish and hopefully be on his way back before she woke. It wasn’t like she hadn’t known he was going and they’d parted in the sweetest possible way regardless of what would soon come his way.

  He and Elm loaded and gave thumbs up once the fighter was ready to go. “I hope we really have immunity to radiation.” Elm said as the fighter took off out the bay door.

  “I wish you’d kept that doubt to yourself.” Oak said. Not that he didn’t worry about it too. Radiation sickness was a nasty thing to live and die with.

  “Sorry Bro. I forgot about your delicate sensibilities.”

  “I’ll show you delicate when we get back from this mission.” Oak promised. The monstrosity loomed ahead completely abandoned.

  They would leave their suits on as they removed the nuclear portion of the bombs even though Phoenix could also survive in space. Maybe no indefinitely, they didn’t really know how long since no one had ever been inclined to stay there. Anchoring to the big bomb holder, they both would get out and share the container once they removed the nuclear material.

  They started on opposite ends each quickly finding a bomb that was “live” and pressing the needed buttons to eject those canisters. Elm popped his into the container Oak held out for him then he finished his bomb off. Even though the scans showed only two active bombs, they checked the other slots to be sure there would be no nasty surprises. Thankfully the other three slots were empty.

  This part of the mission had gone well and now at the very least, they would be able to get this stuff where it couldn’t harm anyone but those that carried it. Scanning the container quickly, he noted it had only low level radiation emissions. Hopefully that would hold until the container was disposed of. They hit hyper speed going to the comet as they had been instructed.

  At the comet, they saw the area looked spooky as hell. No wonder it was considered haunted. He was ready to do his job and get the hell back home. There were more reasons than ever to survive whatever life threw his way now that he was ready to start a family.

  “Do you see a place that we can dump this?” Elm asked.

  “How about that crater over there?” He pointed to a large hole. “While I shoot it in there, why don’t you send out those warning buoys?”

  “I’m on it.” Elm agreed.

  He lined up the shot in a way that Patty swore was just like old Earth video games. She’d promised to teach him to play some simple ones and he felt he would be good at them. Just perfect, he pushed the button and the container shot out into the crater. Watching, he just wanted to make sure it did attach as he’d been told it would. It wasn’t his way to pass his problems off on others as Earth had done with this weapon.

  Elm had the warnings in place and just a few more minutes to be sure. Nothing was happening. “Think it’s safe to go now?”

  “What are you afraid of? You think it will toss it back at us?” Elm chuckled.

  “I just want to be sure it attached firmly and won’t float out of the crater.”

  “I would expect to see it by now. The crater doesn’t look that deep.”

  “Yeah, I thought that too. Let’s get the hell out of here.”

  He flipped the fighter around and they moved to catch their ship. His Angel would be waiting for him and he felt he had a real chance with her now. Glancing at his brother, the same relieved look was on his face. They’d filmed the whole operation for Teresa and Flicker to review, but it had been textbook perfect. Everyone had done their job seamlessly from those that loaded the fighter to the engineer who built the container to the two of them that had carried out the disposal process.

  Maybe they would all get a nice bonus. The crew m
ight not get equal bonuses, but everyone onboard got something. The way Teresa ran things was fair to all and everyone wanted on her crew. Some of those wanting onboard forgot they got the most dangerous jobs. Today was a prime example because so many things could have gone wrong. As a group, they were good. Some were even better than he’d thought like the engineer and Teresa, but they’d also had luck on their side.

  Teresa and Flicker waited for them. “I’ve never been so happy to see two of my crew.” Teresa admitted as she hugged them both. Flicker growled. “Get it under control, Mate. You’re happy to see them too.”

  “Of course I am. I just don’t like my mate hugging other males.” He shot them a sharp look even though they couldn’t stop her anymore then he could.

  “Razar is giving us a bonus. I thought you might want to know that.” She grinned at them.

  “We’ll retire rich someday if we all survive.” Elm offered.

  Epilogue

  “Wake up, Sleeping Beauty!” He whispered to his mate. It was a relief she’d slept through the whole mission.

  “Have you been here the whole time?” Angel asked her voice husky.

  “No, I had to go on the mission but it’s done now and we’re all safe.” He admitted.

  “No really. Stop teasing me. I’ve not been a sleep that long.”

  “You’ve slept at least four hours. Once we got going, everything fell into place.”

  “I can’t believe you didn’t let me know.” She glared at him.

  “It was to protect you. I didn’t want you to worry.” Pulling her into his arms, he kissed her feeling love for his female.

  “Are you sure you’re alright?” She asked.

  “I went to medical with Elm and they scanned us. No signs of radiation. We took the radiation out of the weapons and sent it away.”

  “I suppose there is no point in being mad at you. I do feel relieved that it’s dealt with. A few days and we’ll be back on Oison.” She admitted.

  “You know I want you. We can be so good together. All you need to do is say yes.”

  “I don’t know. I’ve never had a relationship before. The thought of being with someone like that scares me. What will we do?” She asked.

  “We’ll live together, we’ll be together all the time, and eventually, we’ll mate and have a family. Don’t you want kids?”

  “I think I would like to have kids someday. What does it mean to mate?”

  “Once we decided you’re ready, we’ll make love and I’ll bite your neck injecting my mating venom onto you. It will change you a bit. You’ll be more like me and it will extend your life and make you stronger. Over time, you’ll become more like my people. That’s a good thing because you’ll be healthier, stronger, and less affected by heat and cold. Our mates usually live as long as we do which is a long time. Eventually, we’ll move to the community my parents live in and someday I’ll take over my dad’s position as leader of our clan since I’m the oldest. That will be a long time off.” He explained.

  “But what will we do now?”

  “We’ll get a house on Oison and continue our jobs unless you want to do something else.”

  “I like Teresa and I like what I do here. My biggest concern is the fact that your job is so dangerous. What if you get hurt? What of you die? I can’t stand the thought.”

  “Baby, I’m good at what I do. I can die walking down the street at home. You have to deal with danger too. Here or if you stayed home. Let’s work here for now and once we save a good amount of money, we can discuss things again. Fair enough?”

  She nodded her head. “Fair enough.” Holding her in his arms, he slowly made love to her and she fell asleep afterwards.

  They made it to Oison in record time. All the dangers of this mission had made everyone want to get to their home port as soon as possible. Now they would fill Razar in on all the information. Teresa, Flicker, and he would meet him and answer any questions he might have. Angel went to her apartment like the others did.

  Teresa stopped at the desk letting the secretary know they were here. “Go right in. He’s waiting for you.” They opened the door and hurried in closing it behind them.

  “Good to see you. Have a seat.” Razar said motioning to the seats across from him. “The information was concerning. I can’t imagine where they found old weapons like that. How the hell did you know what it was?”

  “Angel recognized it. When she was a child her father worked as a communications specialist for crew that did a little of everything. They were hired to safely dispose of one just like it. It may even have been that one. Once she told us what it was, we were able to research it.” Teresa said.

  “I heard she was able to tell you some of the ships were cloaked too. She’s certainly earned her keep.” Razar admitted.

  “A variety of crew helps meet the problems we’re likely to face. The engineer turned out to be a jewel too. He was able to fashion a container for the nuclear portion of the weapon. The part that’s left can just be recycled. It’s not dangerous at all.” Teresa explained.

  “I have another assignment if you’re ready to take it. Of course you’ll have a week off. You and your crew has done an excellent job. Your pay is in your account. I think you’ll be pleased with the bonus.”

  “I’m sure we will be.” Teresa replied. Razar had been generous with them all.

  He dismissed them and they all hurried back to their quarters. Angel and he would get bigger quarters now that they would share them. Knocking on her door, she opened immediately and pulled him inside. Soon, they would mate. Eventually they would marry too in the way of Angel’s people.

  She’d met his brother, but soon she would meet the rest of his family. They would be her family too and they would love her like he did. Angel kissed him pulling him to her bedroom where he was certain she would make sweet love to him. His gums itched and he was sure he would mate her now because he couldn’t wait to claim her.

  They stepped back undressing so they could enjoy each other. He’d planned to wait to mate her, but he didn’t think he could hold back.
