Railed (Courage MC #2)

“Well, I’ll leave you to it.” Adam said.
I immediately turned around. “NO! You can’t just leave. Not after you saved me like that…” I said.
“Yes, you should have dinner with us tonight.” My dad said to Adam. “We’d…well, we’d be honored.” My mom agreed with him.
“Well that’s mighty kind of you three. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I saved your daughter. She did that herself. But I never deny a good dinner.” My parents laughed and pulled him through the door.
It didn’t take much for my parents to take a liking to Adam. He told stories of his childhood, of past troubles, and growing up with a dad who worked as a mechanic for a living. They were half-truths, dressed in white lies. There were some things you just kept secret. The life of a man on the run was one of them. If only they knew the trouble we went through to get here!
After dinner we said our goodbyes. It was finally time to go. Adam didn’t have a home, of course, so I decided it best he go to a motel down the road and lay low for a while. I’d see him every day at that same park we met in the first place. He agreed, though it was hard for us to be away from each other for so long.
“Hey, I wanna’ say something to him real quick. I’ll be right back!” I said to my parents as they waved to him at their doorstep.
“Okay, honey.” My parents smiled, teary eyed and tired. They were just so glad they had their daughter back.
I ran up to Adam and tried my hardest not to kiss his face. He laughed at the tension. “Rose, when I smooth things over with your parents, the first thing I’m gonna’ do is buy a mansion and put it in your name.” He was proud of his love for me. I could tell.
“I don’t need a stupid mansion. I just need you. And maybe a dog or two.” I laughed.
“No kids? Not even a small villa?” He touched my arm. I looked over at his hand and bit my lower lip.
“Well, maybe a few kids too. I’d settle for a villa.” I smiled and looked down at my feet. I felt the tears swell up behind my eyes.
He smiled. “It’s gonna’ be alright, Rose. You have me now. Forever. No more of this crazy lifestyle. Just me and you.”
“Promise?” I asked him.
He looked at my parents. They turned around and went inside, giving us some space. They knew how much I had gone through and they knew I felt some kind of bond with the guy. He got down on his knee and kissed my hand. “Rose Fischer. Will you do me the honor of being the most badass partner in crime by marrying me?”
I nearly fell to the concrete. My mind went blank. I was so overwhelmed with happiness. “Oh my God, Adam! Ye…no…yes!! What am I saying? Yes, I’ll marry you!”
Out of his pocket came a diamond ring. “It was my mom’s. I snagged it back at my pop’s house. Thought it might look good on you.” He wiped the tears from my eyes. “Hey now. Don’t act so surprised. You knew I was gonna’ marry you.”
“I had hoped!” I practically screamed, choking on my tears of joy. “But I didn’t know for certain. This whole trip has been so crazy, Adam. How was I supposed to know how it would end?”
“I guess there’s been a lot of twists and turns, hasn’t there? The road hasn’t always been as straight as I thought it would be. But now I can see that no matter what the road looked like, it always led to you.” I turned my head to see if my parents were spying out the front window. Luckily they weren’t. I pounced on him, feeling his rugged face against mine, his lips pulling mine, and my hand against his thickening groin.
We weren’t going anywhere, world. This scorched hellhole was our paradise. Adam was my husband. And I was his wife. Nothing would change that. Not even a loaded gun.
Epilogue
One Year Later…
Over time, my parents grew to love Adam. They knew he had been through some tough shit and they knew he and I bonded over it. They understood that by him saving me, I had a companion I could trust in this life. They didn’t know all of the gory in-between insanity we had been thrust into, but they didn’t need to. All they cared about now was my happiness.
Jorge’s money went a long way. We got married in front of our family and a few new friends, on the beach of Southern California. We thought it would be a nice change of scenery compared to the sweltering heat of the desert. The ceremony was beautiful and lasted all night as we drank and told stories by the fire. We left on a horse that took us to our beach front vacation home, as we stayed for our incredible honeymoon. We may be two tough cookies, but boy do we like some luxury now and then!
Adam ended up buying me that villa and some of that money went to me going to college. I never thought I’d do it, but I already love my classes. As for Adam, he has some projects of his own as well. He recently opened his own motorcycle repair shop, as well as giving riding lessons. We still have a lot of money left, but as long as we’re living, we might as well work to have more.
Did I mention I’m pregnant? I have a feeling it’s a girl, but Adam assures me everyday that it’s a boy. As soon as we heard the news, we made an oath to give every cent to that child, to secure its future, so it may never have to go through what we went through.
The authorities never did find Jax. I suppose he died along with Brianna, Bruce, and Jorge. My parents stopped asking questions long ago. It was a sensitive subject around the house. Nevertheless, the legend lives on about how I escaped a madman, hell bent on exchanging me for my parent’s money.
We’ve decided to bury a lot of what we saw. Some things don’t need to be uttered again. Jorge didn’t repent the life he led until it was too late. Brianna died by betrayal – something she knew a hell of a lot about. Adam’s father, Bruce, was a horrible man, but he got what was coming to him. Those things were in the past. Now we’re trying to focus on the good things in life. Because if you don’t, well… It’s like the saying goes, ‘if you play with fire, you’re bound to get burned.’
