Wesley was back thirty minutes later with a crutch. “You’ll use this.”

“Yes, I will,” Lisa said, shocking her husband.

  “You will?”

“If it will make you feel better about leaving me here in the cabin while I’m hurt, then I will promise to use it. See? I’m not unreasonable.”

  “That remains to be seen.”

  “Hey, Wesley?”

  “Yes?”

“I love you, and I’m so glad I’m your wife.”

He sat down beside her, smiling. “I love you right back.”

“Because you know what’s best for you?” she asked.

“Because I can’t imagine not loving you.”

  “I like that.”

  Epilogue

Lisa opened the letter Wesley brought her, a smile on her face. “Jess just had her third baby. A little boy this time.”

Wesley looked uncertain about how to react to the news. “I’m sure she’s happy.”

“And I’m happy for her,” Lisa responded. “Just because I haven’t had a baby yet doesn’t mean that I begrudge my friend her growing brood.” She rubbed the back of her neck. “JoAnn is expecting again as well.”

He walked to sit down beside her, taking her hand in his. “The doctor said there’s no reason you haven’t gotten pregnant.”

“I know there isn’t. It’ll happen.” She bit her lip, trying to hide the grin. “Actually, it has happened. I’m expecting.”

“You are? How long have you known?”

“I’ve suspected for a month, but I’m sure now. This summer, you’re going to be a father.”

Wesley let out a whoop of joy, jumped to his feet, and spun her in a circle. “I hope it’s a little girl just like her mother.”

Lisa laughed. “I’d rather it was a little boy just like his dad.” She rested her head against his shoulder. “You’re happy?”

He nodded. “A little worried about you, of course, but I always will be. I’m thrilled to be a father. I can’t wait to hold the baby in my arms.” He sighed. “I was beginning to think it would never happen.”

“I just would have gone to an orphanage and picked one, then. Think of how much you’d have loved to be adopted by a Mountie when you were a boy.”

“How long have you been thinking of that?”

“Since the day we met…if not before. I was always uncertain about whether I would actually be able to have a baby, so I had a back-up plan.”

Wesley shook his head. “Of course you did. You never do anything the way I expect.”

“No, I don’t. You need to be kept on your toes!” She grinned at him. “Speaking of which, I found a baby wolf this morning…”

“No! You are not bringing a baby wolf into this home!”

  “Please?”

He simply shook his head. He’d been right. Marriage to her would never be simple, but after five years, he knew that it was the best thing that could have possibly happened to him.
