Maeve checked Schmidt. She shook her head.
She said, “Archimedes is dead. O’Hare’s shot hit him in the chest—his heart.”
Mark said, “I tried to shoot O’Hare before he could fire his weapon.”
“Schmidt’s hands were shaking earlier, I noticed. He was still suffering from the attack on his apartment.” She touched Schmidt’s cheek. “We’ll miss him, all of us.”
Mark looked at the pistol in his hand and back at Maeve. She nodded her assent to his unspoken question. He pushed Schmidt’s handgun across the room towards Maeve. He said, “Pick that up, please. It should be disposed of as soon as possible.”
“I agree,” Maeve said as she dropped the weapon into her large handbag.
Mark said, “All of you—please move away.”
He waited for the British soldiers to move. Maeve was already out of harm’s way. He ignored their unspoken questions. He placed his pistol in Schmidt’s dead hand and fired a shot at the wall behind where O’Hare had stood. He dropped Schmidt’s hand; it still held his Glock.
Maeve came over to stand beside Mark. She looked at the visitors. “I support what Mark’s doing. They shot each other. O’Hare was wanted for a number of crimes, including murder and for kidnapping Mark. We—speaking for Cerberus—would prefer to minimize the newspaper headlines. We’ll keep Mark out of the glare of public exposure—no one needs to know he shot O’Hare.”
Mark said, “It’s simpler this way.”
Maeve added, “I think it’s time to call 911.” She dialed the number.
Colonel Hudson said to Mark, “We’ll support you, of course. Do you think the authorities will accept the apparent shootout?”
“We’ll all provide them with supporting eyewitness details. You’ll need to give statements—tell the truth except for the fatal shots. Schmidt killed O’Hare.”
“I think Cerberus UK is going to be an experience for all of us,” the colonel said. Her two companions nodded. They were still in shock.
Maeve finished her call. “We’ll have FBI agents here in a minute or two and there’ll be police. All Cerberus, of course. The story is simple. They shot each other after O’Hare threatened you at gunpoint to force his way in. Agreed?”
Colonel Hudson looked at her two junior officers, who each nodded. She said to Maeve, “We’re agreed.”
I’m relieved that Anna and the children decided to move to London. I might be able to have a more peaceful life, there.
That was something he could enjoy.

About John Hindmarsh
John writes science fiction and thrillers, sometimes with crossover. Well, he claims you need a thrill in your science fiction and an occasional touch of science in your thrillers. John originates from Australia, has lived in England (plus a number of other countries—it’s a long list), and now lives in the High Sierra region of California where he is writing full time. He could be hiking, kayaking, or skiing, when he's not writing.
John's books generally are written with an American voice [well, he tries], although he prefers to write British English. So he gets mixed up.
