Kill The President's Women (Joe The Magic Man Series Book 2)

Burrows was still on line and she could hear Brubaker giving orders to the agents that had Azim under surveillance to take him down immediately and find out where the other bomber was. Alice’s voice droned at Burrows, saying, “Yasmina is getting away. Stop them now so I can get in her head. I’ll find out where the other bomber is.”
Burrows was pacing back and forth in Alice’s room, and Alice’s voice was freaking her out so much as she spoke for Joe, it was difficult for her to stay focused. “Sir, my informer tells me that Yasmina is getting away, and he wants us to catch them so he can find out where the other attack will take place.”
Burrows heard Brubaker yell, “You heard Agent Burrows! I want that area sealed off and I want those two arrested now!”
All the local police cars had been alerted to the bombing and had been given orders to stop all traffic from leaving the scene. Joe could see a police car coming towards them, and he felt Abbar shrink involuntarily behind the wheel. Joe shouted his position to Alice and she screamed to Burrows, “There’s a cop car passing us right now, we’re approaching the traffic lights at 21st and Roosevelt.”
Burrows passed on the information to Control. She knew Brubaker would have it on the big screen and that the cop car that just passed them would receive orders in mere seconds.
Joe heard the cop car screech to a stop and he saw Abbar look in his wing mirror in terror. “That cop just stopped 50 yards back!”
Yasmina turned around. “I think they’re going to close all roads. Park this thing and let’s get away on foot. We must put our trust in Allah.”
Abel shouted at Alice, and Alice shouted at Burrows: “They’ve seen the cop pull up and they’re going to abandon the car and make a getaway on foot.”
Before Burrows passed that on, the cop had spun around and was coming behind them fast. Abbar pulled in quickly into a dark lot and killed the engine, waiting for the cop to pass by before they got out.
Alice shouted, “Tell the cop they’ve just pulled in outside Drake’s Menswear.”
Alice’s shouting was frightening but Burrows had to be calm and transmit. Abel watched through the frightened eyes of Abbar as the cop car stopped just beyond Drake’s Menswear and backed up quickly to block the exit. Two uniformed cops flew out of the car and aimed their guns at Abbar, shouting for him and his passenger to exit the car.
Abel spoke to Alice in a more relaxed tone now and Alice managed to calm down and say to Alice, “Tell the cops to cuff them and shove them in the back of the cop car. I’ll try to get out as much information out of them as possible.”
Abel needed the quiet; he hadn’t been able to jump from Abbar’s mind to Yasmina’s mind because of the physical and mental commotion occurring in the car.
Fareed Azim heard the SWAT battering ram hit the door three times before the reinforced door gave in, giving him time to post one more status update on Facebook. The message was, “Glad there’s a holiday on Monday. I’ll have a break from the kids.”
Jamil was riding in the passenger seat of his car when both posts registered on his laptop. He was also logged into Facebook. The first message meant that Hadj had been forced to act earlier than planned but it was a success; the second meant that they had found Azim and that he had to break off contact with him. Jamil opened the car window and flung the laptop out; he didn’t know if he could be traced from Azim’s laptop but he was taking no chance. Jamil and his driver were following Senator Will Butler’s daughter. Malek Haddad followed closely in the car behind them with 8 pounds of C4 under the passenger seat and a pistol tucked into his belt.
Burrows was waiting for something more from Joe through Alice and at the same time, she was listening to the chatter coming from the control room. Brubaker had asked them to find out about the fireman’s party, and he was patched through to the Fire Chief. A cheerful voice boomed out, flanked by multiple other voices talking in the background.
“How can I help the FBI on this beautiful weekend?”
“Are you by any chance at one of your men’s party?” Brubaker was surprised to hear the laughter in the background.
“Yes I am, but it’s more of a dinner and dance to raise money for the widow of one of my men who passed away last year.”
Frank Brubaker cut him short. “Were any congresswomen invited to that party?”
“Yes, we have Congresswoman Anna Edmar coming, as well as a senator, Senator Will Butler.”
As soon as he mentioned Anna Edmar, Brubaker issued orders. “Chief this is an emergency; we believe there may be a suicide bomber attending that party. Get out and clear the building and the surrounding area. I’ll have a bomb squad there as soon as possible but clear the area now!”
Brubaker hung up and one of his agents said to him, “Sir, Senator Butler’s daughter is his campaign manager, and she’s been on TV a lot praising her father’s work about stopping Muslim immigrants coming into the country. She’s representing her father at the party. She could be the target.”
“Someone find out where she is.” Brubaker ordered. “If she’s in transit, don’t stop her and get her to keep driving until we can get to her. And stop all the traffic behind her!”
Joe the Magic Man had gotten the same information from Yasmina and Abbar. Margaret Butler, the daughter of US Senator, Will Butler, was the other target. Jamil had shown Malek TV footage of her running down Muslim immigrants. Abel found out the plan was to wait until the after-dinner speech and at a given signal, Hadj and Malek would shoot Anna Edmar and Margaret Butler, and as many others as possible to cause panic. They would end it by shooting themselves. Jamil and Yasmina were to wait outside the hall in the car park, and when the panicking crowd rushed out to their cars, they would blow Malek and Hadj’s cars up.
Burrows got the news from Alice and she passed it on to Control, telling them that the other bomb was in Malek’s car, and that Jamil would be close by with the trigger to blow the car at any time.
All the agents were given photos of Malek and Jamil and were ordered to go to the parking lot. They were to shoot on sight, and not give them the chance to detonate the bomb.
Jamil had pulled up just before the park lot and watched Malek follow Margaret Butler’s car into the parking lot. The plan had changed a little but the mission had to be completed. Margaret Butler was the main target and Malek was going to make sure she would never say another word against Islam on TV again.
Margaret Butler’s phone buzzed just as she was getting out of the car. “Who is this?” she asked. Her longtime boyfriend was already out of the car and he looked across at her, a silent question on his face.
“It’s the FBI; they want me to keep on driving.”
Margaret saw the frown on her boyfriend’s face turn to a look of horror. His mouth twisted to form the word, “No!” and Margaret turned around to see what had frightened him. All she saw was a glistening pistol in her face, larger than life, occupying her whole field of vision. She faintly heard the gunman call her “Bitch” before she felt the flame explode through her chest as he pulled the trigger. The second bullet was aimed at the boyfriend and after he fell, Malek trained the gun at Margaret who was already sprawled out on the floor. He shouted in Arabic, “Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! This is for my father!”, then fired two more shots into Margaret’s chest.
Jamil, sitting in his car a safe distance away, could see an FBI Agent running with his gun out, looking to see where the shots had come from. Jamil whispered a prayer for Malek. “Allah has given you strength, brother. You will soon be the martyr your mother will be proud of, and you and Hadj will be rewarded in paradise. May Allah be with you.”
He ducked down for safety, gritted his teeth and pushed the button of the detonator. He waited a few seconds for the flying metal to stop and then he told his driver to get him the hell out of there.
The second agent came running onto the scene, gun drawn. He spoke into his mouthpiece. “A bomb has gone off in the parking lot.”r />
The agent scanned the area quickly and he saw a car make a sharp turn and begin to pick up speed as it came towards him. He recognized Jamil in the car as he tried to drive past him. The agent yelled. “Stop! FBI!” But Jamil screamed at his driver. “Don’t stop, don’t stop!”
The driver accelerated hoping to get out of the way but the agent was already locked on to Jamil, who was closer to him and he fired twice. The bullets caught Jamil above the neck his head jumped back from the impact.
There was a moment of confusion that followed immediately as the evacuated crowd rushed out into the road. The agent was unable to get a clear shot at the driver.
Alice came out of her made-up trance, pretending to be in a daze. “Oh my God, they’ve killed Congresswoman Anna Edmar.” Her grief, unlike the trance, was genuine.
“Alice, are you all right?” Burrows hurried to her. “You and Joe were… were great. You tried your damn best.”
“But we didn’t stop them,” she said, tears in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry, Alice. Were you aware of the trance you just had? Like, were you conscious while Joe was sending those messages?” Burrows asked.
Alice frowned as she pondered the answer. “Yes, or was I dreaming it happened?” she gave Burrows a confused look. “I don’t know… it felt like I was there with Joe, and yet I knew I was here with you.”
Burrows shook her head, unable to wrap her head round what she had just witnessed. “I don’t know if I can go through that again, it was like some creep séance.”
Burrows’ line was still connected to Control and she heard the distress call reporting the detonation of the second car bomb.
“Fuck, fuck!” she turned to Alice and her eyes were wide with rage and sorrow. “We were too late for both of them.”
“Oh no.” The tears finally spilled down Alice’s face.
“Special Agent Burrows,” Frank Brubaker had come on her cell phone, and he spoke in a depressed tone, “I want you and Special Agent Campbell in my office for a debriefing straight away… and oh, tell Mrs. Timberlake and Joe Mann they did well.”
“Yes sir, I will.”
She dialed Campbell’s number, wondering whether he wasn’t at HQ. A sleepy voice answered. “Yeah, this better be good for I’ve only just dropped off.”
“Then you’ve missed all the action. Brubaker wants us back at HQ for debriefing ASAP.”
“Debriefing?! What’s happened?”
“Well Hadj Haddad shot Congresswoman Anna Edmar and blew his car up.”
“What?!” Campbell flew out of bed.
“And we believe Malek Haddad has shot Senator Will Butler’s daughter and then blown his car up. I’ll fill you in on the way. See you in 5 minutes."
The damn bastard, Burrows thought, sleeping his life away.
It was very late at night when Burrows phoned Alice to tell her that Frank Brubaker had told his staff that if it wasn’t for the good work done by Joe Mann and Timberlake, working with Special Agents Campbell and Burrows as a special task force, that there could have been a lot more deaths. The suicide bombers would probably have gotten both bombs to the party and caused several casualties. Burrows hinted to her that they could have a nice little bonus in their pay. Burrows also asked Alice if she could come down to the precinct in the morning and get Joe to work his magic on Fareed Azim, Yasmina and Abbar. They needed to find out who the driver of Malek’s car was, and all the others that were working in their terrorist cell. This was imperative because the FBI’s anti-terrorism unit had until recently, been unaware of the existence of this terrorist cell.
Alice told her there would be no need for her to go down; Joe was already in the mind of Abbar and Yasmina, so if they let one of them speak to Azim, Joe would simply jump into his mind and get into all their dreams. Every detail would be found out.
Abel was in Alice’s mind when Burrows phoned her and congratulated them for their help. He knew Alice couldn’t wait to write her story for the papers, and to get back home to her husband John and finally tell him about top secret case she had been working on. He said goodbye to her and left Alice to write the story. Abel was glad the FBI was happy with their work, and he felt Frank Brubaker was a trustworthy person, a person he was willing to work with again. He knew he had to be careful though, for there were still those who saw his gift as a threat to the government and would love to turn him into a lab rat in an attempt to learn more about telepathic hypnosis. Abel knew he’d have to keep his identity a secret for the rest of his life, or end up as a freak puppet for the CIA.
Abel also knew Joe would have to give Jean the beauty queen a miss tonight. He was too tired. He’d make it up to her in their next adventure. If he didn’t take her on a past adventure like “The Three Musketeers” or “Robin Hood”, then perhaps he would take her on an adventure to the future like “The Seventh Moon” or “Parallel world”.
Abel gave a big sigh because he knew that wherever Joe the Magic Man decided to take Jean, she would be willing to go.
