  “I’m not mad at you,” I tell him, and it’s true. “I never really was. Well, Cami helped me deal with that part.”

  “She’s a good kid, just like you. I heard you guys met in college?”

  I smile and soften a little. “We did. Then I started hanging out here. We actually lived kitty corner from each other without realizing it.”

  “You guys have very similar tastes. I’m not surprised. She’s quite…”

  “Tenacious,” I finish and he laughs.

  “Yeah, she is.” He takes a deep breath. “I’m glad you guys have each other.”

  “How long?”

  “Before it’s over?” he confirms and I nod.

  He shrugs. “I don’t know. It’s been five years, I don’t know if it will ever be over.”

  I walk toward him. “I hope it’s over soon,” I tell him before wrapping my arms around him and hugging him.

  “Me too, baby girl, me too. I’d like to be a part of your life. Of my grandbaby’s life too.” His voice is soft and he kisses the top of my head.

  “I’d like that.”

  “I’ll try and come back again, soon. But I have to be careful.”

  “I understand,” I tell him. “I don’t like it, but I understand.” I smile up at him and he kisses my forehead.

  “Thank you for forgiving me.”

  I nod and just like that, he disappears, sliding out a back gate and I wrap my arms around myself, ready to collapse when warm arms wrap around me, holding me up. The scent that is all Dyson consumes me as he picks me up, leading me to a table to sit down with me in his lap. “Please don’t cry, princess.”

  “I didn’t realize I missed someone who’s never been here before,” I tell him, and it’s true.

  He sweeps the hair from my face. “That’s what parents due to us. We miss them like crazy whether we want to or not.”

  “Do you miss your father?” I’ve never asked him that question before.

  “Parts of him, yes. I miss the parts of him that were good. The parts that, despite his drinking and abusive nature, he couldn’t let go of. I miss playing catch with him, things like that. No matter how angry I want to be at him for what he did to us, especially my mother, but the love I know he had for me in there somewhere wins out above all else.”

  I cry a few more tears then let them dry up. “I have no doubt one day he’ll be back,” Dyson says to me. “But until then, just remember him from today, remember him from the letters. Just because he wasn’t there, doesn’t mean he doesn’t love you.”

  “That sounds like someone else I know,” I tell him.

  “Oh, who would that be?” His eyes light up.

  “Oh, I don’t know, this cocky-stuck up-expensive suit wearing-asshat who ran into me in the lobby of a building I was desperate to work in.”

  “Say it,” he growls.

  “Prickweed?”

  He laughs, then sobers. “Say my name.”

  I grab his face in my hands, staring intently into his eyes. “Irresistibly undeniable.”

  “Say. My. Name.”

  “Dyson.”

  HARPER Lauren Cole was born October 28th, two days past my due date, and she weighed nine pounds, six ounces. She came out rocking a head of gorgeous red brown hair. Dyson swore up and down she looked just like me, but I think she looked just like Dyson.

  She’ll turn two tomorrow and we’re getting ready for Halloween. All her buddies are coming, but that’s a story for another day. She’s super excited and doesn’t want to sleep so Dyson has her curled on his lap reading Good Night, Moon to her and she’s pointing out all the things on the pages and trying to say what they are. There’s been one advantage to being a stay at home mom- I get to spend all my time with her, teaching her and helping her. I miss working, but once Harper was born, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else with my days. Though Cami and I regularly work on Bold related business and Dyson and I are constantly working on Tigress together, I’m happy with it being just that.

  Dyson and I married the following February, after Harper was born. It was the one year anniversary of the day I dumped coffee all over him and he sent me into the bathroom bawling my eyes out. Back then it had been overwhelming given the situation at the time, but now, I wouldn’t trade that day for the world. It was the day that brought my long lost love back to me.

  Watching him with Harper makes my heart swell impossibly bigger than it already is and he never fails to disappointment when it comes to taking care of her. He seems to have this unspoken rule about coming home from work and it being his time with Harper. I watch as he reads to her, absently playing with her red curls. Her hair is a darker red than my own, but the curl is just like mine.

  Days like this, when he’s all too eager to cuddle with her and play with her, I enjoy because I’ll happily take the break. My hand rubs along my distended belly. Just a couple more weeks and Harper will be a big sister to a little brother. If his flipping and flopping inside of me is any indication, poor Harper is going to have her hands full of little brother before we know it.

  “Billionaire business tycoon and founding owner of Bold International, Inc.…” The headline on the television captures my attention and I leave the doorway in favor of the TV in Dyson’s office. “Robert Enders was seen walking down the streets of Hollywood today. This news comes after a joint task force between Mexico, ATF, FBI and CIA successfully apprehended and shut down the largest Mexican drug cartel Mexico has ever seen. There was rumored speculation that Robert Enders was involved in the case from twenty-eleven and he was believed to have died in May of that year. Now we’re learning he is alive and well and back in Los Angeles.”

  My phone rings. I pull it from my back pocket. “Cami, is it true?” I ask her as a greeting.

  She’s crying into the phone. “It’s over, Ireland, he’s coming home.” I put my hand over my mouth and the tears begin to stream down my cheeks. “He’s safe, they’ve released him. He’s supposed to be maintaining a low profile and he managed to board a plane before the news caught on. He’s here in Phoenix. We’re setting him up with someplace he can stay for a while, lay low. He came here because,” she sniffles, “because he wants to be near us.”

  “My god, Cams, he’s really coming home? It’s really over?”

  “It’s over, baby sis. It’s all over.”

  I sit down on Dyson’s office couch and then I’m hit with a tightness in my abdomen and a hot rush of fluid streaming onto the floor. “Shit.”

  “What’s wrong?” Cami says into the phone.

  “Can you and Tristan come over and watch Harper?”

  “Of course, but what’s wrong?”

  I’m cry laughing. “My water just broke.”

  “TRISTAN!” she shouts into the phone. “We’ll be right there.”

  A new contraction strikes me and I groan, dropping my phone, breathing through it. I wait for it to subside, but I don’t move. Not until I hear the door alarm chime and I find strength to stand up. I don’t make it to the doorway before I’m hit with yet another contraction. “Shit, these are fast.”

  As it subsides, I start walking until I get to Harper’s door. Harper is asleep on her daddy’s chest, and I smile at him. “Please don’t panic,” I tell him. “Can you put Harper in her bed, please?”

  He narrows his eyes, and then he takes in my horrible state of affairs and stands up quickly. “Cami, Tristan and the kids are here, they’ve got her,” I tell him. “Just let her sleep.”

  His eyes are wild with fear, same as when Harper was born, so why he keeps getting me pregnant is beyond me. He’s already talking about a third and fourth and I’m wholly and completely okay with that.

  He lays Harper gently in her crib and comes to me just as another contraction hits. “Let’s get you cleaned up,” he tells me.

  “We don’t have time. They’re not even two minutes apart,” I
huff.

  “Well, okay then, let’s get you downstairs.”

  “Good plan,” I tease and he lifts me in his arms. “Dyson,” I squeak.

  “I got you, princess.”

  I shake my head and snuggle into him as he carries me downstairs. He sets me down on a dining room chair. Cami and Tristan are there, Jaden is playing on the floor and Sydney is asleep in Tristan’s arms. “Harper’s out. If you wanna go put her in bed with her.” Tristan nods and goes upstairs with Sydney.

  Cami looks at me in concern. “Are you alright?”

  I give her a pained panicked look. “I’m about to push another one of these out of me. What the hell was I thinking?”

  She laughs, “That makes two of us.” Her hand slides over her much smaller, less obvious bump.

  “We ready?” Dyson asks. He loaded the stuff in the car two days ago, hoping this would happen sooner rather than later, that and I was having Braxton Hicks pretty bad. I think he was a bit paranoid.

  “As ready as I’ll ever be, Hercules,” I laugh and he scoops me up in his arms.

  “I love you,” he says as he kisses my cheek.

  “Just remember that in about a week when I’m exhausted and biting your head off.”

  “I remember it, every day, every time I look at you.”

  “You’re incorrigible, you know that?”

  His lips slant over mine and despite everything going on around me, I know I’ll always want him, that I will only ever want him because he is my forever.

  “Say it,” he teases.

  “My forever, my irresistibly undeniable, my Dyson.”
