Dom Mumford had reserved a private dining room at the VIP lounge at LaGuardia, assuming we’d want a quiet meal after the press conference. We insisted that Dom join us.

We sat and regaled Mumford with stories from the 1940s. Dom just kept shaking his head, the standard response from a non-time traveler. Dom’s a hard guy not to like, and we were happy that he joined us for dinner.

“So, Dom,” I said, “I guess your idea for our publicity flight got even more press than you expected. It’ll probably be front page for a week. But it may not be a good recruiting tool as you had hoped.”

Jack laughed. “Yeah, I’d love to write the copy for the recruiting ad: ‘Join the Navy and see the world, and maybe another century or two.’ ”

“Ashley,” said Mumford, “the next time I come up with an idea like this I’m going to have a full squadron of aircraft tailing you.”

My cell phone buzzed, indicating that I had a text message. Only a few people have my cell phone number, so I couldn’t resist checking the message. Besides, using a cell phone after our trip to the 1940s was kind of fun.

“What the hell is this?” I said. “This message appears to be in Arabic.” I handed the phone to Buster. He read the message, first to himself.

He looked at me, then at Jack, then at Mumford.

  “Here’s what it says:”

“Congratulations to you Admiral Patterson, and to your infidel playmates. This message is to inform you that the sword of Allah is poised at your heathen necks.”

“Welcome back to 2016 folks,” said Mumford.
