by Mashaba, Herman;

  One of the rare pictures of my brother, Pobane, which fills me with regret whenever I see it.

  1983. Me in my first car, a blue Toyota Corolla, the foundation of my business career.

  1983. Connie posing near my Corolla outside our first home in Temba.

  1995. The two big influences in my life: Mr Gilbert Maloka, Connie’s dad, and my mum, Mapula Mashaba, posing outside the house I bought for her.

  1995. My mum holding my daughter Khensani, and my nephew Koketso.

  1997. Connie with Khensani (3) and Rhulani (9 months) at our home in Heatherdale, Pretoria North.

  Early 2000s. Gilbert and Enid Maloka, Connie’s parents, with Rhulani, Khensani and my nephew.

  The deposit slip of Walter Dube’s loan to Black Like Me. It remains framed on my office wall to remind me of the start of my business journey.

  The early days. Joseph, Johan Kriel and me outside the Black Like Me factory in Mabopane.

  Connie and me at work. We eventually managed to install a phone line which revolutionised sales for Black Like Me.

  Tony Lopez (centre), three times world boxing champion, with Walter Dube and me at the Sun City Superbowl in 1993.

  Mid-1990s. Felicia Mabuza-Suttle on one of the occasions when she visited our offices after becoming a Black Like Me brand ambassador.

  One of the major Black Like Me sponsorships was the SABC Road Safety Campaign helicopter in the late 1980s. I would often go up in the helicopter.

  This picture of me and Bertie Lubner was taken on the day I joined the Field Band Foundation.

  Prior to its public opening, we were among the honoured guests invited to a special event at Robben Island: Bill Cosby, Connie, Nelson Mandela and me in Mandela’s cell.

  Sharing a table with Hillary Clinton at the dinner on Robben Island.

  2009. Shane and Celia Ferguson at my 50th birthday. Shane has been my corporate adviser for many years.

  As the City of Johannesburg’s Executive Mayor, I launched a pilot project to extend service hours at the Princess Clinic, north-west of Johannesburg, in October 2016.
