Conspiracy in the Capitol

“Well, that wasn’t intense or anything.” Rae spared a glance at Flint as they both waved at Brooke and walked to the elevators with their heads held high.
“You’re telling me.” Flint’s labored breathing gave away that the situation had affected him more than she realized. His anger hadn’t dissipated like she thought it had earlier in the conversation.
“Do you want to talk about any of it when we get back to our apartments? Whose apartment are we going to anyway?”
“How about mine?” Flint asked as he looked down at her but kept walking to the elevator.
“Sure. But I don’t have any of my clothes or other items at your apartment.” The elevator doors opened as soon as Flint pushed the button, and he held them open for Rae as they both entered.
“Trust me; you won’t be needing any.”
Epilogue
Several Weeks Later
“Hey, John,” said Rae, smiling as she sat down at her usual table. “I brought a special guest with me tonight.” She gestured to Flint, whose hand she was holding as she walked through the entrance to the Green Hat. It had been a couple more weeks since the showdown at Flint’s father’s office. The couple had been busy after that and had just found time to come to the Green Hat tonight.
“Hey, I’m John.”
“Flint. It’s nice to meet you.”
“You look familiar. Have we met before?”
“I met Rae at this bar a few years ago.” Rae felt her cheeks heat when Flint looked at her with a smile before turning his attention back to John.
“How’s everything going, Rae? Surprised, you beat the other ladies here.”
“Good. Can’t complain. And you don’t know how hard it was to get here early versus on time or late.” Rae chuckled before she continued, “Can I ask for your help with something before the girls arrive?”
“Sure. What do you want to do?”
Rae smiled at Flint before she said, “Can we use your television?”
About twenty minutes later, one by one, Rae’s friends arrived and hugged her. She could tell that they weren’t expecting Flint to be there.
“How did you get here so early? Did you order us drinks? And you brought Flint? What has gotten into you? Are you sick?” Liv reached over and checked Rae’s forehead before Rae batted her hand away.
“No. I’m fine,” she laughed as she took a sip from her red wine. “But y’all might want to sit down and watch that TV. Thanks, John!” she said as she gave John a wink.
The lights in the bar lowered a bit, and a video started on the screen closest to the four friends sitting in their favorite bar. Flint felt around for Rae’s hand before he grabbed it and gave it a gentle squeeze.
Rae watched as her friends’ jaws almost hit the table the longer they watched the video. She tried to pry Liv’s hand from around her wrist because the pressure was becoming too much.
“He’s running?!” Liv exclaimed while Rae massaged her wrist, after finally removing Liv’s tight grip from her wrist. “You’re running?!” She jumped up and ran over and placed her hands on Flint’s shoulders.
“And he put you in the announcement video?” Jules turned to Rae wide-eyed. “This is a big deal on multiple levels.”
Rae nodded as she turned her attention to Eve. Until that point, Eve hadn’t said a word, but she looked over at her friend with a sad smile on her face. “I know this is what he wants, but are you sure that you want to handle this?”
Taking a moment to compose her thoughts, Rae responded, “I know it will be difficult, and chances are they will pick our lives apart on some level.” She stole a glance at Flint. “But this is something he truly believes in, and I believe in him and his dreams, so we both figured why not?”
“Then I’ll help you both in any way I can.”
“I will too,” Jules and Liv said in unison.
“Jinx, you owe me a soda,” Liv said as she nudged Jules. Jules shook her head and turned her attention back to the television.
Rae chuckled at them and turned to Flint. “We can do this.”
Flint beamed at her and said, “I know we can.”
