  Epilogue

Seumas looked around for Tavish as he and Alfred and the other men escorted the druid Brian up to his audience with Laird Malcomb. That MacGregor had been here just a moment ago. Where could he have gotten to?

And then when they were almost up out of the caves, passing through the washroom, Tavish came up from behind out of nowhere and joined them, as he was wont to do in this area. Come to think of it, Seumas had been meaning to ask him about that. But not when others could hear them.

They had passed on up by the entrance guards and were in the castle town when the prisoner tried to make a break for it, lunging between him and Tavish.

He met eyes with MacGregor over the druid’s head when they both threw their knees out to stop him, making the man double over and retch. They shared a grim satisfied smile, and then each took an arm and hoisted the prisoner kicking and screaming between them all the way to Laird Malcomb’s office, where he ordered the druid locked into the tower, which they did with satisfaction.

The group of men paused outside the tower door while their leader spoke with another head guard.

What was it he was going to ask Tavish about again? Oh well. Must not have been important. Instead, when he turned toward Tavish, he asked the man the first thing that came to his mind.

“Is Kelsey well after her … dunking?”

Ah, and there it was in the man’s eyes. His love for the lass, aye, but also his certainty of her love for him. Seumas was happy for them.

Tavish nodded with a contented smile.

“Aye, that she is. Nae harm done.”

The man’s eyes had a faraway look to them. Guessing he was remembering a pleasant time he had spent with his woman, Seumas felt the urge to be elsewhere. Not because he envied the man and felt alone in the company of one so happy, no. Just because he had better things to do.

But Tavish started patting all around his waist with a bit of a stricken look on his face.

“My sporran. Must’ve fallen. Had it when I went down with you to go get Brian. Need to retrace my steps.” He took off at a brisk pace down the hallway, looking down at the floor.

Seumas went about his duties with the squadron of guards, expecting Tavish to rejoin them at any moment, with his sporran once again around his waist by its cord. The more time went by without that happening, the more concerned and curious he grew.

Finally, he made an excuse and ran off after that MacGregor. After descending the stairs, he encountered the man, but he wasn’t alone. Kelsey was with him, and the two of them looked very happy, and again he was happy for them, but the other woman along with them distracted him.

Wrapped up in Tavish’s spare plaid as if it were a cloak, she walked with as much certainty as Kelsey did—a true rarity in a woman. How remarkable for there to be two such women in his acquaintance. She spoke Gaelic with an accent like Kelsey’s, but stronger. They must have come from the same glen. She spoke with confidence as well, even though she faltered for words as if Gaelic were not her true language.

And she was a beauty. Her hair was as red as his, and her skin was clear and fair between the redheaded sun dapples. She was tall and lean and strong—he could tell even through the cloak she wore.

And she was staring at him in awe.
