”Enough for me to justify sticking a piece of rubber up your ass.” He quirked his brow at her scowl, daring her to dig herself deeper, but the soft smile on his lips showed her the bit of understanding he had left. “How about we do this before you get yourself into any more trouble or the guard comes around?”

Nodding, she looked down at the plastic bag that held what was left of her father. The man she had feared her whole life was reduced to what was essentially sand. “I don’t know how to do this.”

“Do you want to say a few words?”

“He was an asshole, and I hated him.” Embry looked Maverick in the eyes. “He was a horrible person, who I feared more than the scariest of monsters. Shit, he was my boogieman, but he was all I had left.”

“That may have been true a few months ago, but that isn’t the case anymore. Now, you have us. You have Eden, James, Prim, me, and all the other people at The Garden. You are loved by so many, and we are going to make sure you don’t forget what real love looks like. What that man gave you was not real love.”

She looked down at the bag of ashes she held in her hands, torn. “I don’t care about him. I don’t care that he’s gone, or that I had to make the decision I did, but I feel like I’m severing the ties to my past.”

“No, not severing the ties.” He picked the pendant off of her chest. “Your past will always be a part of you, but it will no longer define you. Your choices will do that.”

  “Because I have choices now.”

  “Because you have choices now.”

Embry stepped back from him, nodding as she moved to the edge of the outlook. “I’m ready to put this behind me. I’m sick of carrying him with me.”

With an easy turn of her wrist, she upended the bag and allowed the last of her past to swirl away with the wind. As the ashes settled, she turned to Maverick.

“Now, my future is my own.”

I have been writing since high school, but truthfully never thought it would go any further than a few short stories hidden deep within my laptop. It wasn’t until my family moved away from everything we knew that I started writing stories worth sharing. Now, my husband, three kids, our plethora of animals, and I live in a small town in the Midwest.

When I’m not running around like your stereotypical soccer mom (sans the minivan) I am writing the type of stories I have always secretly treasured. Love stories with a sexy alpha and a strong submissive counterpart.
