“I’ve always known you could do it.”
“With you goin’ back to school to get your doctorate, I need to work at home and help take care of Katie. Now’s the perfect time to try a novel.”
“Do you have an idea for a story?”
He nodded. “Us. What happened to us this year. I’ll change the basics so much that nobody who knows the real story will make the connection. But the important things will be true.” Rucker laid a hand along her cheek and studied her carefully. “Do you mind if I write about what happened? I’ll need your help with it.”
Her eyes gleamed with devotion. “I don’t mind. I think it’ll do us both good.” Dinah hesitated then tilted her head quizzically. “What are ‘the important things’ you won’t alter?”
For a moment he gazed at her and their daughter in silent reverence. Then he said softly, “The love. The faith.”
She smiled an enduring Yes.
