When the cell door opened, Ethan rushed to her. He wrapped his arms around her so tight she could barely breathe. Selene laughed. She felt on the verge of hysterics.

“Did they hurt you?” he asked.

Selene shook her head. “They made me-” She had to take a deep breath and start again.

“The made me agree to sign away the trust fund. They said they would kill you.” She searched his eyes desperate for a sign that she’d done the right thing.

Ethan only nodded. “It’ll be alright.”

“I’m going to get you out of here,” she whispered, “some how, I promise. They won’t get the money. We’ll figure something out.”

“Of course,” his voice was flat. Selene could tell he didn’t believe her. “Listen to me,” he said, suddenly turning serious. “Any chance you get, take it: run away. Don’t tell anyone where you’re going. If I make it out of here I will find you.”

Hearing him say ‘If I make it out…’ brought tears to her eyes. “Ethan,” she said pathetically, as if reciting his name would somehow keep them together.

The guard walked into the room. “Time to go.”

  “Promise me,” Ethan said.

  “I can’t.”

  “You have to.”

But she refused. The last words she managed to shout to Ethan as the cell door closed were: “This isn’t over.”

Selene wiped the tears from her eyes and let the guard lead her through the corridor.

Every step she took away from Ethan, the harder she felt. A steely resolve came over her: we’re in this together now, she repeated to herself. She was tired of being the victim. It was time to go on the offensive, but where to start? Ethan’s wife. The thought came out of nowhere, but Selene knew her instincts were right. She had to get to her, find out what she knew. She could be the key to getting Ethan back.

They approached a stair case leading up to a trapdoor. “When we go through this door you’re going to stay with me and keep your mouth shut. Do you understand?” The guards expression was severe.

“Yes,” she said, surprised at how confident she sounded.

The guard opened the door and led her through. The door opened into a large walk-in closet. They stepped out and the guard closed the door behind them. The sound of laughter and music increased. The guard walked to the closet door and put his finger to his lips. “Keep quiet,” he said.

He opened the door into a bedroom. It contained two twin size beds. Each bed had a man and woman on them, engaging in various sex acts.

Selene stood, feeling surprised for a moment, then quickly followed the guard out of the room.

As they left, one of the men flipped the girl he was fucking on her back, then turned and winked at Selene. She moved quickly, suddenly eager to keep pace with her guard.

The hallway was full of half dressed people drinking and laughing, some were having sex right in the open, oblivious to those around them. No one spoke to her or even looked at her, if they had she wasn’t sure what she would have said. Selene wasn’t a prude, but she found it all more than a bit unsettling, especially considering what she and Ethan had just gone through in the basement.

The guard led her on into a large foyer. Selene stopped in her tracks. It hit her all at once, she knew where she was: Ethan’s Victorian mansion. Who were all these people and why were they in Ethan’s house? A woman crashed into Selene.

“I’m sorry,” she said. Selene thought she looked angry and distracted. “I wasn’t watching where I was going.” The woman sighed and eyed Selene and her pregnant belly. “Are you okay? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you around here.”

“We’re just leaving,” Selene’s guard informed the woman.

The woman watched Selene closely. “If you need help,” she paused and looked at the man significantly, “with anything, call me. My name’s Bree, Alex’s fiancée. He knows the man who owns the house I’m sure they’d be happy to help.”

With that the woman slipped away as Selene was dragged out of the house into the cold night. Before being shoved into the car the last thought on her mind was: Bree.
