Chapter 1
At First Sight
Jay
“Who’s the Miss Plastic Fantastic?” Vinny’s ribald shout echoed through the closed shop. His voice wouldn’t carry outside. For the moment, the group of guys assembled within were safe in their jests.
“I haven’t heard that term used to describe anything but a credit card,” Rone said dryly. He turned at the same time the rest of them did. Tools clanked to the ground all around the shop.
Jay Kline rolled his eyes. Rone never had been up for much good natured sport, even before he’d met Jay’s sister. Now that the guy was living with Heather, he was absolutely no fun at all. He refused to crack so much as a dirty joke, at least when it involved a woman. And their jokes always involve women. They worked in a damn shop full of rough, blue collar guys. The jokes weren’t going to be anything less than R rated.
Vinny pointed out the far south window. It was just a small square in the garage door. Whoever was on the other side of it was blissfully unaware she was about to become the target of a whole hell of a lot of not so good natured jokes.
“Let me guess. Whoever she is, she’s blonde but not naturally, blue eyed, long legs, probably a shit load of injections to the lips, skinny but curvy, maybe has ass implants. For sure has a twenty thousand dollar rack job.”
Vinny hooted. “You’re as good at diagnosing women as you are at cars, Jay. Hit it right on the mark.”
“Okay, okay.” Rone started going over his socket set, looking for whatever he needed. Or didn’t need. He was probably just trying to distract himself so he wouldn’t have to input anything into the vulgar conversation.
“You’re such a bore,” Jay said under his breath. Rone went right on picking over sockets. “You used to be fun.”
He finally looked up, socket in hand. It was the most uncommon size on earth, something he’d never use. “Back when we were teenagers and I didn’t know any better. We’re getting old, Jay. Real old. Don’t you think it’s time to man up? Those women, they probably have feelings you know. They’re not just on the meat market for you to have your fun with, chew and spew out and be done with it.”
“Oh, chew and spew. That’s a good one. I knew you’d have something to say after all.”
Rone shot him a threatening look. On the guy, who already had a pretty damn dark countenance with a deep set brow, dark eyes, angular features, a shaved head and a whole lot of size and muscle to back up his feral bearing, even so much as a scowl could go a long way. They’d had their fights over the years. You couldn’t be friends with a guy since childhood and not give each other the beat down once and a while. The latest had been over a year ago, when Rone came out with the news that he was dating Jay’s kid sister. Jay had pretty much lost his mind and Rone hadn’t even tried to defend himself.
In the end, Jay came around because he had to. He knew his sister and Rone both had their own minds. They were going to do what they felt like. Months later, when Heather finally moved in with Rone, he eventually started to get comfortable with the idea. They looked like they were in it together for the long haul and for his sister, who was way too petite and beautiful for her own good, having another huge brute in her corner to watch her back didn’t hurt one bit.
Jay veered away from Rone. He should have got the hell back to work on the piece of shit suspension on the piece of shit minivan he was currently working under, but he just didn’t feel like it. Vinny and the other guys had already dispersed, their moment of fun spent. They sauntered around the shop, finding excuses to do nothing at all.
Sidling over to the window, Jay stole one illicit look. He had to see for himself what had Vinny all worked up. The guy was six five, had done some time here and there. He was as tough as they came, and like most other guys, had a weakness for beautiful women.
“Checking her out, huh, Jay?” Vinny crept over out of nowhere.
Jay started, wondering how in the hell a guy Vinny’s size could sneak up on him. He’d been across the garage just a moment before. “Nope. Just had to see for myself. The old magazines aren’t doing the trick anymore. Thought I’d keep one in the memory for the next time I-”
“Fuck that,” Vinny cut him off. “You’re supposed to be the golden boy of the shop. The Lay King.”
“You know, that has a nice ring to it.” Jay grinned. “What can I say? The chicks like the hair and the eyes. I can’t help that I was made to be a sex god.”
Vinny rolled his eyes. “So you say. We’ve yet to hear from one satisfied customer.”
“Don’t joke about the customers.” Jay lowered his voice. “That’s how I get half my lays, you know. I stick my card up under the visor. It has my number written in pen on the back. You’d be surprised who ends up calling. Most of them do.”
“Get out of here! That actually works?”
“I shit you not.” He nodded solemnly.
“You better hope Mr. Yes doesn’t get wind of you pulling that stunt. He’d fire your ass in a second.”
“Doubtful. Mr. Yes likes to please the owner. That’s why we call him Mr. Yes. Because everything is ‘yes, Martin, right away, Martin, I’ll see to it, Martin’. I’ve been working here for years. No one can figure out problems like I can. No one can diagnose shit like I can. No one can take a car apart and put it back together as fast as I can.”
“Still. Martin isn’t partial. He’ll just find someone else and Mr. Yes will yes your ass right out onto the street.”
Jay turned, far more relieved than he should have been that the woman was still out there. She was standing next to a black sports car, something that cost upwards of a quarter of a million. If he was on his game, which he usually was, he was probably right on with his estimate.
She was bent over it like she wanted to get on top the hood for a photo shoot. She was giving Mr. Yes, who stood off to the side, mouth hanging open like a damn vulture, a hell of a lot of pushed up, rounded, gorgeous breasts in a pink lacy dress that went with the whole plastic doll kind of look. Her bright pink high heels were sky high, but her height was all natural. She had the legs every single man dreamed of- and m
ost women too. Curvy, never ending, flawless.
Jay shut his eyes for a second and imagined what those legs would feel like wrapped around his waist. He snapped out of it before he could spring a hard on in the middle of the damn shop. He wanted to, but he couldn’t tear his eyes away from the vision outside.
Her breasts, surprisingly, did appear to be natural, though she appeared to have one hell of a push up bra on. Her tiny waist flared out and she had an ass that was shaped to perfection. No butt implants. No, it appeared to be natural too. She was indeed blonde, and that appeared to be straight out of the salon. It was that white kind of blonde that was completely manufactured, but on her, somehow it looked amazing. Her hair was nearly waist long and suited a face that was made for magazines. She had the high cheek bones of a model, flashing blue eyes, which may have been color contacts, a straight, petite nose and a dainty jawline. And her lips… good lord, they were the lips of a legend. She had on soft pink lipstick or gloss, he couldn’t tell from a distance, but it matched her dress.
She has the kind of lips that would be perfect wrapped around the base of my cock.
Her skin was flawless. She wasn’t quite tanned and she wasn’t pale either. Somewhere in the middle. Whatever shade it was, Jay found himself wishing he could run his hand over that skin. Over every single inch. The urge to caress her arm, her thigh, her calf, her damn foot even, was so bad his fingers itched.
He glanced down at this grease encrusted hands. Whoever that chick was, she was from the other side of the tracks, if he wanted to get real cliche. She wasn’t from around. Why she came to their garage, when she could have gone to one of the shops wherever she came from, was beyond him. But there she was, hands on her sweetly flared hips, giving some sort of speech to Mr. Yes. She indicated her car quite a few times. She was probably instructing him not to fuck it up. And good old Mr. Yes was yessing away out there. He was nodding so hard his balding head looked like it was going to float off his hunched over shoulders. The guy was sallow. He was the kind of paper pushing office clerk that people made fun of when they wrote sitcoms about paper pushing office clerks.
The woman, whoever she was, handed over the keys to her car. She turned on her heel, took her phone out of a pink clutch and started dialing. Probably calling for her other ride, which was ten to one a fucking limousine.
“Mr. Yes is heading this way.”
Vinny jabbed Jay in the ribs. It wasn’t until that moment that Jay realized how lost he’d been. He’d been completely wrapped up in staring at the damn goddess out there. It had been a very long time since he’d been swept off his feet by a woman. Does that term even apply to guys? He couldn’t have torn his eyes away if he tried.
“Better look busy, boys.” Jay whirled, annoyed with himself. There was a strange prickling right under the surface of his skin. He knew something wasn’t right under the surface, where a hell of a lot of… feeling was going on. Something about the chick out there was unnerving.
He wanted to be crude and imagine her naked and screaming his name like he did with almost every other woman he was interested in, but he just couldn’t. She wasn’t the kind of woman he could conjure up nasty images of and that disturbed him. He tried to imagine those globe like breasts naked. Were her nipples pink and sweet or dark and perky? He tried so damn hard to imagine him stripping her bra away, but he just couldn’t get there. The image fell flat and his mind refused to push past it. Instead, he saw other breasts. He was a self-proclaimed player and it wasn’t just a bunch of fluff bullshit like the guys sometimes thought. He bounced around from one woman to the next. He didn’t have the heart to make anything stick. Maybe he was damaged in that department. Maybe he just didn’t want the loads of baggage that everyone else carried around. Whatever the reason, he took them home and forgot them after and that was the end of it.
He couldn’t even get so far as to imagine taking a woman like that home with him. She wasn’t the kind of person that you spent a single night getting to know. She had the kind of body that would take nights, weeks, months, to explore. She was the kind of woman guys talked about like it was a drug they couldn’t get enough of.
At the moment, Mr. Yes walked through the door. “Jay,” he ground out. “Get your ass in my office. Now.”
Jay wasn’t the kind of guy who normally gave Mr. Yes an easy time of anything, but at the moment he was willing to take anything as a distraction to get his mind off his disturbing one track thoughts. He slowly walked across the shop and out into the small office where their manager pushed paper.
Mr. Yes took a seat behind his desk. Jay’s eyes roved over the small office. Most of it was windows. The other half was a large desk complete with computer and laptop, because apparently, one or the other wasn’t enough. There was a debit machine in there and a small POS system for ringing people up and inputting records. They each had a POS similar at their stations in the shop for making notes and ordering parts, and of course, for billing. He clocked in and out of the damn thing every single day.
“You got a special one there,” Jay muttered under his breath. He glanced out the window at the car. “We don’t have the tools for it.”
“I know that, but I wasn’t going to turn down the job. Not at double our normal shop rate.”
“You quote her that because she’s got a wallet the size of the entire state?”
Mr. Yes leveled him with a direct gaze. “No.”
Jay could see right through the guy’s bull shit. Mr. Yes had that weasel kind of voice he couldn’t stand. What hair was left on the guy’s head, which wasn’t much, was always permanently greasy. He wore the kind of pants that were popular eight decades ago, the brown tweed kind of shit. His white dress shirts always had sweat stains under the armpits.
If you weren’t such a fucking little prick we might actually be nice to you once and a while.
“Anyway, we’re farming it out, aren’t we? You didn’t tell her?”
Mr. Yes’ face reddened immediately. He looked like a cherry about to burst. Okay, shit image with Mr. Yes and cherry combined in one thought. Jay bit back a sigh of disgust.
“No, I did not inform her. She said a friend had work done here. She recommended the shop as being one of the best in the city.”
Jay rolled his eyes. “That is fucking far from the truth. You should have sent her packing, not taken her money like a damn leech.”
“That is not your decision,” Mr. Yes ground out. “Just take the fucking keys.”
“Where am I taking her?”
The guy rattled off a shop name and address Jay hadn’t even heard of. Probably because people didn’t roll into their neighborhood with expensive fucking cars like that every single day. More like never in a million years.
“What if I wreck the car along the way?” Jay cocked a brow, daring the little shit across from him to come up with something witty. Mr. Yes leveled him with a direct stare.
“Let’s just say, you better fucking not. And not a word gets out about this, or I swear Jay-”
“You swear what?”
“Just deliver the damn car and get your ass back to work.”
Jay shrugged. “Have it your way. I’ll deliver it.” And take a fucking pit stop along the way to do whatever the hell I feel like on your dollar.
“Have one of the guys drive behind you for a ride back. You have half an hour.”
“It will take as long as it takes, unless you want it in a smoldering pile of ruin on the side of the freeway.”
Mr. Yes’ eyes took on a panicked look. His face blanched. Jay nearly laughed. “Fine. Be back shortly though. I’ll be watching for you.”
Creepy. “I bet you will.” He cocked a brow and shot Mr. Yes a thumbs up before he grabbed up the keys and got the hell out of the office. He didn’t like the little room. It was too close, to tight, too small, too… well, too a lot of things that didn’t jive well with him.
As Jay marched into the shop and called for Rone, the one thought that was racing thro
ugh his mind wasn’t how careful he was going to have to be with a car that cost more than his entire house, but whether or not it would smell like the nameless woman, the one woman he couldn’t imagine as a one night stand or a fast lay, a woman who had lodged herself firmly and effortlessly in his mind when no other woman in his entire life had been able to achieve such a feat.
Chapter 2
Another Job
Laya
“I hope you know what you’re doing, Laya. This isn’t the kind of place to leave a car like yours. It’s your baby. I would hate to see anything happen to it.”
Laya shrugged from the passenger seat of Mark Essa’s lifted pickup truck. She thought it was the most ridiculous thing she’d ever set eyes on, but her agent liked it. She’d gone to high school with him. The fact that he was only a couple years older than she was, but had two little kids and a wife at home just made her feel all that much more like she didn’t have her life together.
Twenty-four isn’t that old. It was the same pep talk she gave herself with every passing, directionless year.
“It’s going to be fine. I have a friend who had her car break down. She brought it to this shop and she recommended it. She said that the guys were amazing. They had her car done in record time and they found out that it had a transmission leak, which they fixed up while she was there. It saved her tranny going out on her.”
“Do you have any idea what that even means or do you just have a penchant for storing and spouting nonsense information?”
Laya grinned. “Coming from you, Mark, I take that as a thinly veiled compliment.”
“As opposed to coming from someone else? And by the way, Sarah has a used, domestic car. It cost twenty grand new. Yours is an import. I doubt they even have the right equipment to work on it.”
“The manager assured me that they could do it and they’d have it done within a couple days. He told me himself that everything would be fine.”
“And did this manager seem like the trustworthy type?”
