Ezra stood, ready to fight.
“Mr. Knight, I invited you here because someone should be a witness,” Levi said as four large men walked into the room. “Don’t make me regret it. You’ll have full access to the data after I do what needs to be done.”
Arrest him. Take him out of the country and put him at Green’s mercy.
“Kimberly Solomon, I’m placing you under arrest for treason,” Green said as his men put hands on her.
Damon had moved quickly and gripped Ezra’s arm, stopping him from what he wanted to do—tear apart the men who were manhandling his wife.
Ex-wife.
“Don’t,” Damon whispered. “You have to let her go. We’re outnumbered. There’s a reason he’s doing it here. He’s got the full cooperation of MI6.”
“What is happening?” Kim tried to pull away but they held her tight.
“Be careful with her,” Levi barked. “I told you I’ll kill the first person who hurts her. She’s an important prisoner.”
“Levi, I swear if you take her, I’m going to kill you,” he said, his heart racing. He’d thought he’d found the worst-case scenario, but Levi had taken it a step further.
“I’m sure you’ll try,” Levi replied with a calm that unnerved Ezra. “Damon, I wish you hadn’t stopped him. I wouldn’t mind shooting him right here. Solo, your name was on the list. We know you were working with McDonald. What a pity.”
Kim had gone completely white. “That’s not true. You’re lying.”
Damon’s hand tightened as they began to haul her out. “There’s nothing you can do now. Patience. We’ll get her back if we need to. I promise, brother. Don’t make things worse right now.”
It was the word brother that did it, that calmed him and made him believe every word Damon was saying.
Kim looked to him. He waited for her to plead with him to save her, but then her shoulders straightened and her chin came up. She didn’t believe he would fight for her.
Because he’d given her no reason to think he would.
She walked out, the betrayed queen on her way to the execution, her head held high, her whole demeanor defiant even as she complied.
His queen.
He watched as Green turned and walked after her, but not before he’d winked his way.
“I’m going to kill that man,” he vowed.
“I’m going to help you,” Damon promised.
He was left shaken. Now that she was gone, he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that he couldn’t let her go.
