After several minutes, she broke the silence. “I know that the whole town thinks of him as a common thief, but I feel quite sorry for Dr. Russell, or Scott Jansen, or whatever his name is.” She continued, “It must be horrible to care so deeply for someone and know that they don’t feel the same way toward you.”
She had anticipated a response from Creighton—a bit of cynicism, a display of his acerbic wit. But there was nothing, just the sound of crackling logs upon the fire. Through her peripheral vision she saw that he sat motionless in his chair, his pale blue eyes fixed upon her as if in some sort of fugue.
She turned her head and met his gaze, her face a question.
But if there were any answers, Creighton was not willing to provide them. He merely smiled, wearily, drank back the rest of his cognac, and quietly left the room.
