Taming Her Hybrid Beast

  Epilogue

He ran hard and fast, felt his lungs fill with air, and then slowly blew it out. His animals were in control right now, and letting them out to run free and wild was a glorious thing that brought a different kind of euphoria into his body. His muscles flexed and contracted every time his paws landed on the ground. Emma was right behind him, and he would have purred out in pleasure over that fact. Another four weeks had passed, and Roake was hard at work with Declan and Maverick. They had already located an underground facility where hybrids were being tested on, and had already moved in and saved three hybrids that had been used and abused by sick motherfuckers. There were more facilities, he knew this, but he had to make sure that he had to help as many as he could. It wasn’t just for his sake, but also for the males and females that were being tortured purely for the way they were born. He needed to do this for Annabelle as well, because the little female needed to have vengeance in her name, too.

Annabelle was taking one day at a time, and was even working at a small café in Sweet Water, because he hadn’t wanted her to leave. But what he did know was that if she decided to leave, Jason would be right there with her. The last he heard Jason still hadn’t claimed her, but that was to be expected given all the shit she had gone through.

He took a right and traveled upstream to where they always stopped after they ran. He and Emma shifted every night and took a long run in the woods. Roake needed that like nothing else, needed to be able to sate his animals, and have this peace and quiet with his mate. He saw the cabin they were building up ahead, and he slowed. Emma moved up beside him, her breath coming out in slow, even pants, and he nuzzled her with his big head. She purred, rubbed up against him, and he ran his tongue along her face.

The cabin was only partially made, and it was only a retreat for them. Because she ran the farm at her parents’ old home, that was where her life was. But this place was just for them, tucked away in a secluded part of her property, and for them to just get away from everything. He moved over to the small storage shed that was already erected, and shifted back into his human form. He grabbed a couple of blankets and moved over to Emma. She was still in her clouded leopard form, and he grinned. He liked her watching him with those hauntingly soulful eyes. He wrapped his blanket around his waist, walked over to the bundle of firewood stacked by the shed, and proceeded to build them a fire. In minutes the flames were crackling, and the sun was starting to set below the horizon.

She shifted moments later, after the silence moved between them in a comfortable embrace. Emma grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around herself, and he couldn’t help but continue to smile at her. She was so damn cute when she was thinking hard, and right now it was like she was trying to douse the fire with her mind. He got up and moved toward her. When he sat beside her on the log that was their unofficial fire bench, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close.

“What’s wrong, baby?” He stared at the fire, and when he felt her grab his hand he glanced down. She smoothed her fingers over his fingers, up his forearm, and placed it on his chest. He looked into her face, and saw that there was something weighing heavily on her. He smoothed a hand over her cheek, and he loved when she closed her eyes and leaned in to his touch.

“I have to tell you something, and I’m not sure how you’ll react.” She stared at him, and his heart thundered in his chest.

  “Are you okay?”

She nodded, grabbed his hand, and pushed the blanket away from her body. When she placed his hand right on her belly, for a second he was confused. But then it dawned on him, and he lifted his gaze to her face.

  “Emma?”

“I just found out, and am about four weeks along.” She swallowed and looked down, but he wasn’t having any of that.

“And you were afraid to tell me you’re pregnant with my baby?” He lifted her head with a finger under her chin.

“I just know everything you have been through, and having a baby probably isn’t the right time—”

He stopped her by kissing her long and hard, and all these emotions slammed into him. “I’m going to be a father, baby.” He kissed her once more, and smiled.

“I don’t know if I’m ready for this.” She smiled. “I take it then this is good news?” She chuckled.

“God, Emma, this is the best news I’ve had in my life since finding out you’re mine.” He cupped the side of her face and said, “I don’t know if anyone is ever really prepared for a child, but I think you and I can do it together.”

“I am so happy to hear that, Roake.”

“You’re my life, and everything I am is because of you. Now, I will live and breathe for you and our child.” He rested his forehead against hers and breathed out slowly. For the next several hours they stayed that way, watching the flames, enjoying the stillness. He didn’t know what he had done in his life to deserve a mate and now a child, but Roake wouldn’t stop until he knew they were both taken care of, and that his life was for them, because of them, and that he’d make sure they knew that each and every day.
