  “I can’t believe we’re moving. Again.”

  Emma couldn’t believe it, either. She was so proud to have gotten that first apartment, her first place completely on her own. Then the new building was beautiful—Dante made sure they had an apartment on the top floor that had a lovely view of the city from the living room and Emma’s room—and comfortable, but she had always known it would be temporary. The moment she finished her undergraduate degree they would have to consider their next move. And Sophie was eighteen now, ready for a college of her own.

  She just wasn’t expecting to be moving in with Dante.

  “This is a good thing,” Emma reminded her.

  “I know. But it doesn’t make the packing any easier.”

  “Make sure you pack your supplies in a carryon bag. Airlines lose luggage all the time.”

  “I know. I did.”

  “And you should have some snacks handy in case you go low.”

  “I do. You don’t have to keep reminding me all the time, Emma.”

  “Am I supposed to stop caring just because you’re going five hundred miles away for school?”

  Sophie started to say something, but then she snapped her mouth shut and came over to give Emma a hug. “I’m going to miss you, the nagging and all.”

  Emma hugged her back, pulling her as tight against her chest as she could. “Me too.”

  “Can I get in on this?”

  Sophie immediately stepped back so that Dante could join them in their family hug. He kissed the side of Sophie’s head before stealing a kiss from Emma.

  “Are you sure you don’t want to fly on the jet?”

  Sophie’s eyes lit up, but then she shook her head. “I don’t want to interrupt the honeymoon.”

  Emma groaned. “I told you, it’s not a big deal.”

  “It is a big deal. You already delayed your honeymoon two days so you could help me pack. I don’t want you to push it back any more.”

  “You, my love, are too much like your sister.” Dante kissed the top of her head again. “We’ll see you in a few weeks. Don’t forget to make space in your schedule for us.”

  “I won’t.” Sophie pulled away and grabbed her bag. “The car should be here by now.”

  “It’s been here for about fifteen minutes,” Dante said.

  Sophie groaned, but it was halfhearted. They helped her carry her bags downstairs with Emma once again going through the list of things Sophie could have forgotten, but didn’t. They said their goodbyes at the curb, and Emma cried despite all her insistence that she wouldn’t.

  Dante pulled her back against his chest and held her cradled against him as they watched the car pull away.

  “She’ll be fine.”

  “I know,” she said, as she lifted her hand to wave one last time. “I’m just not sure I will be.”

  They flew to the Bahamas for their honeymoon, spending two weeks in the sun, enjoying every moment they managed to get alone together. Then they flew to New York to visit Dante’s father. Emma loved to watch him with his father, the way he became a little boy again despite the fact that his father was clearly proud of the man he’d become and happy to be a friend to the child he raised.

  “He’s a very good man,” Faustina said to Emma.

  “He is.”

  “He no have to marry me. I told him, no marry me. But his mother, all she do is ask and he come running. His mother…she make him do anything she want with a word, a look.”

  Emma nodded. “He adored her.”

  “He do anything for her.”

  Those words seemed to define Dante.

  “He do anything for you,” she added.

  Emma blushed at the remark.

  They lay in bed that night, the future laid out in front of them. Dante was flourishing in his role as CEO and majority stockholder of DJC. They recently released a new set of apps and an updated version of the smartphone. They were all selling well, the phones giving Apple a run for their money. And she was about to start medical school, unafraid of the struggle that awaited her. They shared a life Emma had always wanted but never thought possible for herself.

  Dante had set out to ruin her life, but what he really did was give her everything she was too afraid to aspire to. And Dante himself seemed to have gotten everything he ever wanted. Sometimes he had to take it, but this his time he really earned it.
