Bertram swallowed hard and said, “That’s correct. You can move to Santa Fe and open a studio and gallery and….”

“I ain’t movin’ nowhere, I’ll stay on my place, and I can pack a bunch of ‘em down to Santa Fe now and then, but I ain’t livin’ there.”

Ricardo Baca, Angelina’s brother, was standing by the fire and said, “Si, and if Senor Cain, does not wish to make the trip, I will gladly take them for him. My sister is holding some for him along with his pack horse.”

When the fire was burning low and the night sounds were all you could hear besides the snores of those sleeping, I lay there thinking, What a crazy world this is, where people in the East would pay more than a cowhand could make in four months for a little do-dad carved up piece of wood…plum crazy. I dropped off to sleep thinking it might be a good idea to ride on home with Ricardo to give that bunch of carvings one more look to be sure they were all ready to go before he took them to Santa Fe.

  The End

  About the Author

Lou Bradshaw spent most of his working career as a commercial illustrator, cartoonist, and graphic artist. A long time storyteller and something of a nonsense peddler, he finally turned his sights to serious story telling as he neared retirement age. He says it was one of the best decisions he ever made. Cain is the sixth book he has written, and there are many more waiting their turn.

Lou and his lovely wife Avon have traveled extensively throughout the American west, have ventured up many a hiking trail, and have known the thrill of the next vista. For the past 35 years they have lived in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks, where they enjoy their family, friends, and the great outdoors.
