“I’m a woman with a purpose, I guess. I never know when to quit a fight.”
Those whiskey-brown eyes locked onto hers with a hunger that made her insides quiver. “I’m going to miss you, Riley.”
“Are you trying to get rid of me again?”
“We had a great week.”
“Had?” Did he honestly think she was going to walk away without using every weapon in her arsenal to get him to admit his feelings for her? Even if he was sometimes immune to her charms, she was damn well going to try. She drifted a step closer and slid her hand across his chest, resting it atop the strong beat of his heart. “Look around you, Josiah. We have this.”
“A back alley?”
Stubborn cuss.
“Put your hands on me, big guy.” They settled at the nip of her waist. She rose up on her toes and pressed a kiss to the scar beside his mouth. “I’m talking about this.” She walked her fingers around his neck and palmed the back of his head, pulling his mouth down to hers. “And this.” She breathed out a sigh of satisfaction when he angled his head and took over, exploring her mouth with a series of leisurely kisses. They were both breathing heavily, leaning against each other when he finally raised his head. “Unless you’re sending me away again, I don’t want to leave.”
“You want to keep working at After Dark?” His teasing voice rumbled against her ears.
She remembered how safe she’d felt that night in his apartment, spilling her guts and giving her heart to the big brute. “I want to keep…seeing you.”
“The sun’s coming up, Riley. Take a good look at this beat-up face. You sure I look like something you want to deal with in the bright light of day?”
She smiled, understanding that he was taking a risk, too. “If you think you can handle me, Detective, I think I can deal with you.”
He laughed. “I don’t know that any man can handle you.”
“Keep trying. I think you’re getting the hang of it.”
He palmed her butt and lifted her for a kiss. “I think I am.”
