Incubus

Page 33

by Ann Arensberg

Immersed in the natural world, its cycles and hazards, I will lose any memory or inkling of the worlds beyond it. Working off my pledge all winter in Henry’s laboratory, I will be obliged to confront the truth as his research shows it. He believes new lands are intersecting with ours at an increasing rate. In twenty-three years our geographic and psychic boundaries will be all but obliterated. I would like to think his figures are a product of personal bias, a classic case of the experimenter influencing the experiment. Which of us is right? Henry is farseeing, while I am prosaic and shortsighted. This globe, this cloistered earth, is the beginning and the end of my imagining.
