“What? No. I just said you had a shitty few months. Sebastian, tell her I didn’t get into detail.” She holds onto his arm and my eyes narrow onto it.
“She didn’t spill anything,” is all he says before leaving, heading to the kitchen.
“So, should we watch a movie?” Cara claps her hands together. Sebastian walks in and passes everyone a bottle of beer.
“I’m driving man, but thanks.” Cory takes the drink and places it on the table in front of us.
“You can stay at my place, if you want? If you want to have a couple?” I offer.
“Are you sure? I don’t want to overstay my welcome.”
I give him a smile, shaking my head. “I wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t.” I throw back his words that he said my first day working at the bar and he chuckles at me, picking up the beer again and taking a sip.
“Well then, guess I’m having a few.”
I lean into his side and kiss his cheek. “Plus, my mum loves you, she won’t mind.” He kisses my shoulder and I tuck my feet underneath me, getting comfortable. “I am after a good horror movie. I am not in the mood for anything lovey-dovey.”
“Should that be warning me about something?” Cory says, putting his arm around my shoulder, making me move in closer.
“No, I just prefer a good horror.”
“I agree, I enjoy a good horror if it’s a decent enough story line,” Sebastian says, sitting next to Cara.
“See? He agrees, so that’s two votes.” I stick up two fingers.
“What about a romantic comedy?” Cara asks, pouting at me.
“I don’t think Cory is going to be the second vote on that,” Sebastian chuckles.
“Sorry, Cara, but I’d rather watch a horror.”
She crosses her arms and sighs. “I am so going to have nightmares tonight.”
“It’s only after one in the afternoon, you will most probably forget about it by the time you go to bed.”
“That never happens. I end up not thinking about it, and once I close my eyes, all the memories of that film just come flooding back.”
“Well, why don’t you stay here again?” Sebastian asks her and she turns her head so fast looking at him that I’m afraid she got whiplash.
“You sure?”
He shrugs.
I just take a sip of my drink.
“Yeah, of course. Why don’t you all stay the night?”
I almost choke on my drink.
“At least then we can just crash when we are ready.”
“Thank you so much, at least I know I won’t have trouble sleeping. I need at least eight hours of beauty sleep and I know I wouldn’t get that after watching a horror,” Cara says in a mumbled rush.
“You don’t need beauty sleep—you are always beautiful.” Sebastian compliments her and I start to feel that knot in my stomach again. This is a glimpse that I never see, the softer side, and he only shows it to my cousin.
No wonder she is head over heels in love with him.
“What do you think, Iris? You want to stay over?”
I look at Cory then at Sebastian. He lifts his drink, taking a sip, but his eyes bore into mine. I can’t say no as it would mean I have a problem with it.
“I guess so, if you’re sure, Sebastian.”
“My home is your home.”
“Thank you.” I look at the TV. “Okay, then stick on a horror. I heard Annabelle is meant to be good.”
“Great, I am never going to look at a doll the same way again.” Cara pouts again and we all chuckle.
We did decide on Annabelle and I have to admit it was an okay movie but I hated the baby part. I think it would have been scarier if Cara hadn’t jumped and yelped every ten minutes. I force everyone to watch another horror and we decide on the classic Nightmare on Elm Street—and that is scary shit.
“I am definitely not sleeping tonight,” Cara says, hugging a pillow.
I didn’t mean to, but during the movie even I jumped at a scene, even though I have seen it like a million times.
“I am sure Sebastian will cuddle you,” I joke and Cara bursts out laughing.
“He will have to after this movie.”
I cuddle into Cory and he starts stroking my shoulder. I just feel so content that it hasn’t bothered me anymore that I am at Sebastian’s.
He hasn’t cornered me or tried to get under my skin, so I think that’s a win. I look at him, and like he knows as always, his eyes connect with mine. He gives me a nod and I give him a small smile. I look back at the TV and when the movie ends, Cara sits up, chucking her pillow.
“So, what the hell does that mean? Did she dream it all or is she dreaming there? How is that an ending?” she whines.
“Cara, there are like another five movies if you want to watch more.”
She looks at me like I’m crazy and jumps over, causing me to jump. She is lying over Cory as she hits me and pulls me towards her.
“I will kick your ass, Iris, if you make me watch another horror.”
I grab her arms, losing my balance, and we both fall onto the floor, laughing our heads off. I climb on top of her and she is squirming underneath me. “You should know that I will kick your ass,” I taunt her.
“Get your heavy ass off me.” She wiggles herself.
“Not until you agree that my ass is amazing and that we can watch one more horror.”
“I’d rather get squished.”
I start bouncing on top of her like I used to do when we were kids and she is screaming and laughing.
“One of you can help me.” Cara looks at Cory and Sebastian for help.
When I look at them both, they are watching us with smiles. “Enjoying the view, fellas?”
“We are, actually,” Sebastian replies.
“What he said.” Cory points to Sebastian.
“You guys are pigs.” Cara squeals at the end when I bounce back down on her. “I am not watching another horror.”
“Well, I won’t be moving and I am getting hungry. I may try to gain more weight as I’m so comfortable.” I wiggle my ass and she screams again. I feel arms come around me and I am lifted up in the air and it’s Sebastian who has me.
“Cara, what do you want her punishment to be?”
I turn my head and watch as Cara stands with an evil look on her face.
“This isn’t fair, Sebastian, let me down.” I try to stand but he holds onto me tighter. I feel a slap on my ass and Cara has her arm in the air and she hits me again. “Cory?” I scream.
“Yes, baby.” He is still sitting, watching us.
“You could help me.” I feel another slap on my ass. “Cara, I swear if you hit my ass once again …” She hits me again.
“I will admit it is a fine ass but it needs to be punished.” Cara gives an evil witch laugh. “I know what her main punishment should be.”
“Main punishment?”
“Take her this way,” Cara says and she walks off. I am being carried away and Cory is just watching me so I give him a look and he stands and follows us. I hear the shower being turned on and the next thing I know I am pushed under the cold water. I scream my lungs out as the cold water hits over me.
“I am going to kill you,” I scream out and my clothes are stuck to my body. “You are so dead.” I get out and they all run off.
They better run.
I grab a bucket that I see under the sink and fill it with water. I look out the door, seeing if I can see them but it’s all quiet. I tiptoe out and head down the hall, opening doors and looking inside as I go. I get to the last room, which must be Sebastian’s room and I walk in, looking under the bed, looking at every hiding spot I can find. I don’t really pay attention to the room itself as I want my revenge. I am about to leave when I hear a little noise from the wardrobe, so I head that way. I hear another movement and I’m trying so hard not to laugh. Without thinking twice, I open the doors and throw the water at the person, and when I hear a groan I realise it is Sebastian that I d
renched.
“Fuck,” he swears, looking down at his clothes and even the clean clothes that are hung up are drenched. I cover my hand over my mouth to stop the laughter and he looks up at me, grabs me, pins me to the floor, and starts tickling me.
I am screaming for him to let me go. “Stop, please stop,” I laugh and scream.
“You got me soaked.”
“You got me soaked first.” I try to wiggle free.
“You wet my clothes.”
“Duh, do you not see my clothes?” I grab his arm, and with all the karate lessons I had when I was younger, I move my leg, wrapping it around his waist, and flip him over so that now I am on top.
“Are you a fucking ninja?”
I giggle. “Something like that. Be careful who you mess with.”
“I am learning that.” He stops moving and just lies there, looking at me.
I don’t move. We just stare at one another and I watch as he raises his hand and tucks a wet strand of hair behind my ear.
“Iris…” he starts.
“Holy crap, she got you.” Cara comes in laughing. “Cory, she got Sebastian.”
I quickly stand and give us some space.
“Why didn’t you say she was a ninja?” he jokes.
“Oh yeah, she did karate since she was a kid. She is a sneaky little so and so.”
He goes to her side and Cory comes to mine, bringing me to his side.
“You are so wet.” Cory kisses my forehead.
“Yeah, no thanks to you.”
He laughs. “Sorry, I didn’t think they would put you under the shower.” Cory and Cara burst out laughing and I chuckle.
“I need clothes.”
“You can borrow some of mine,” Sebastian offers.
“I think I soaked some of your clean clothes.”
“Oh, my God, you didn’t?” Cory walks to the wardrobe and starts laughing again. “That is so funny.”
“I have some clothes in my drawers.” Sebastian walks over and hands me a T-shirt and some shorts.
“Thanks.” I take them from him and head back to the bathroom to get dressed. When I come out, I hear Cory and Cara talking in the living room so I head that way when I bang into Sebastian and notice he has gotten changed too.
“My clothes look nice on you,” is all he says before sitting next to Cara again.
I take a deep breath and sit next to Cory.
“I have put on Jack and Jill. It has Adam Sandler in it,” Cara says.
“I love Adam Sandler,” I say, happy with the film choice.
“Me too,” Sebastian says but I don’t comment back.
We watch the movie and I drink a few more, laughing continuously throughout the movie. I am stroking Cory’s arm as I watch and then I hear whispering coming from Cara and Sebastian. I try to not listen in, but when Cara shrieks, I look at her and she flings herself into Sebastian’s arms.
“Holy shit.” Cara looks at him in shock. She looks at me with the hugest smile ever. “Sebastian just asked me to date him.”
My eyes open wide and I look at him but he doesn’t once look at me.
“Congrats, man.” Cory gives Sebastian a hand clap. “Happy for you, Cara.” He hugs her and I just sit there with my mouth hanging open.
“Yeah, I am so happy for you.” I hug Cara. This is what she always wanted. She looks so happy, so why do I feel like I have been cheated on? I am with Cory and Cara is with Sebastian.
This is how it was meant to be.
I watch the rest of the movie and we continue watching two more but I can hardly pay attention to them. Why couldn’t he have asked tomorrow? What has changed? He says that I look good in his clothes and then asks my cousin out. What the fuck? When it gets to eleven, I decide to head to bed. Cara shows us to the spare room and Cory and I snuggle in. With his arm around me, I do start to calm down, but the main thought that pops in my head is, are they going to have sex?
I must have fallen asleep since I wake up and it’s after two in the morning and I get up to get a glass of water. I almost scream bloody murder when I turn and see Sebastian standing there.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
“It’s okay. I was just getting a drink.” I lift the glass showing him.
“I was doing the same.” He walks past me and grabs a bottle of water from the fridge. “You could have got a bottle from the fridge, I wouldn’t have minded.”
“I didn’t want to help myself.” I start to walk away and I turn to see him looking at the floor. “Please don’t hurt her.” He lifts his head looking at me. “She’s a good person.”
“I know she is.”
“Then be good to her.”
“You really are one of a kind, aren’t you?”
I shrug. “‘Night, Sebastian.”
“‘Night, flower.”
I walk away, heading back to bed, and once Cory cuddles into me, I close my eyes and let sleep take over.
The last couple of weeks went by in a blur. Cory and I hung out every chance we got and I noticed that Cara and Sebastian are getting closer as well. We have hardly hung out since the movie day at Sebastian’s place except at Randi’s, but I am either working or Sebastian is playing. We haven’t had any chances to be alone, but I feel grateful for it so I don’t mess up a good thing.
I am excited about today as Ella is finally visiting for the week. I can’t wait to see her and to actually talk to her face-to-face. Cory is hanging out at my place and I am lying on his legs as we watch TV. I’m counting down the hours until we pick up Ella from the airport when I hear a knock on the door. I look at Cory in confusion, wondering who is it, but when I answer, I let out a high-pitched girlie scream when I see Ella standing there with a huge suitcase.
“What the hell are you doing here? We were meant to pick you up in a few hours.” I sling my arms around her and she holds me just as tight.
“I wanted to see your face, so I lied on the time of my flight. Like hell I was waiting to actually come to America. I miss my girl.”
I keep holding her, not wanting this moment to end.
“You can let go now.”
“No, you might disappear.” We giggle.
“I won’t. So, come let me in.” I let her walk in first and she stops and I see her eyes go to Cory. “Holy shit balls, he is so much hotter than the pictures you have on Facebook. So happy there are two of you.”
Cory stands and shakes her hand but she pulls him in for a hug. “Any boyfriend of my girl is a close friend of mine.” She winks at him and he shakes his head at her.
“Nice to meet you too.”
I link my arm into Ella’s, taking her away from Cory. “Okay, let the man breathe,” I laugh. “Come on, I will show you where you are staying.” I grab her suitcase and take her to my room where she looks around, taking everything in. She walks to the pictures I have hung on the wall.
“At least these are good pics of me,” she says, looking at each one. “I thought there would be more of our group.”
I sit on the bed and she sits next to me, and I notice her eyes going to the side of my room, looking at the object that I haven’t touched since Mum placed it in my room.
“You need to stop doing this to yourself.”
I feel a tear fall and I feel angry that this still upsets me. “I don’t want any part of him in my life. I hate him so much.”
She holds my hand and sighs. “This was your world once—you can’t let him ruin this for you.”
“It’s not the same now that I’ve moved away, anyway.”
She nods in understanding. “It’s not the same with you being gone.”
“It’s Mum’s birthday tomorrow. Do you think I can pass you being here as a birthday present?” I joke, trying to change the subject.
“Fat chance. Come on, show me the shops, or is it called the mall here?”
I place my head on her shoulder and she puts her arm around me.
“I missed you so much.”
&n
bsp; I look at her and I can see the sadness in her eyes. Ella may appear to be this hard-core, confident person, but she is a huge softy with a heart of gold.
“I missed you too—more than you can imagine.”
The following day, Ella and I get up extra early to put up banners and balloons, making the place look like party central. I even baked a cake, and I have to admit, it looks mint. I invited Cory, Sean, Sebastian, Cara, Calvin, and even Anna over, as well as a few of Mum’s work friends. They should all be here soon. I decided on a necklace with a “Mum” pendant, as well as a bottle of vodka, chocolates, and a spa voucher for her gifts. I would love all this, so I’m hoping Mum will too.
I went with black jeans and a black vest top today, and I am happy that I have lost a little weight. I think working in the pub and hanging with Cory all the time have been good for me as I’m not binging on crap. Ella helped wave my hair and do my makeup, and I look and feel great. Ella went with black denim shorts, showing off her long legs, with a white vest top. Her hair is half up, half down, with a few strands framing her face, and her makeup looks similar to mine—smoky eye shadow and dark lips.
I place my presents and card on the table, and even Ella got her something. She is like a second Mum to her, so I’m not surprised she had a gift for her already. I look around, happy about how the place looks. The first knock comes and I answer to let in Cory and Sean. Sean comes at me first, dipping me and kissing my neck.
“Have I mentioned how lucky my brother is recently? Every time I see you, you get more beautiful.” He stands me back up.
Cory comes over and hits the back of his head. “What have I told you about touching my girl?” Cory kisses my cheek.
“I am waiting for her to change her mind so I can have a little taste.” He winks at me and I’m sure I am turning red right now.
“Holy fuck, that is the hottest thing I have ever heard,” Ella says behind me. I notice how Sean’s eyes zoom in on her, his eyes trailing over her body, and he looks lost for words.
“Sean, this is Ella, my best friend from back home.”
He is still staring at her and when I look at her, she is smirking at him.
