Know Thy Enemy

  Chopper spluttered forward at a rate Drayk never knew possible, but he watched the animal’s stats. And the speed cost him, dearly.

  MROVIAL GIANT

  LEVEL 21

  SPEED 20/100

  STAMINA 5/100

  HEALTH—30/100 - FAILING - DANGER TOO LOW

  Chopper put his own health in jeopardy. As it fell to less than 20%, Drayk had to stop him. Chopper almost threw them from his back.

  Drayk patted him, as the beast panted. His leathery skin was damp and cold. “Thank you, boy. You had no need to do that.” But Chopper just wheezed, tongue hanging out.

  Ahead lightning stuck, the rain breaking around them, bursting down in massive sheets.

  Drayk and Leenz were soaked in seconds. “It’s classed as autumn here,” she said, “no outside heat. We need to get to the respawn point. We’ll be okay there.”

  Drayk laughed, wiping the filth from his clothes. “In all the time I’ve been here, this is the only instance I think I’ve been clean.”

  They ran. The fuel driving them was the hope Pierce might already be there, respawned.

  Arriving at the giant altar, Drayk dropped to his knees, sucking in O2 like he never had before. The thing spread out before him was a massive block of glowing stone.

  They both ducked as lightning struck the altar; Leenz let out a cry.

  Naked as the day he was born, Pierce’s body lay waiting for his consciousness to surface.

  Drayk and Leenz tried to approach but a shield sparked up in their way.

  Pacing around the shield, Drayk trying his best to get inside. Looking for any weakness; there was none. “Damnit,” he swore.

  The shield failed and Leenz pushed her hand through. She rushed inside to scoop Pierce up and carry him out into the day’s sun light.

  Drayk stared at Pierce’s unconscious body, he had so many questions, but no one to answer them. Not yet. He felt useless.

  What happens now? Where was the future for all of them, the village or even the whole of New Ararat?

  Drayk tugged his coat off, wrapping Pierce’s body with it. They’d wait here for Max and Wayne, then take them all back to the village.

  Pierce’s body jerked, and his eyes opened. Panic set in as Pierce tried to push himself up, as his eyes widened and he cried out in pain.

  Pierce’s first words as he locked eyes with Drayk were a mere whisper, but Drayk heard it loud. Clear. “I know where Cale is. We have to save him!” And then Pierce collapsed.
