  Marc Dean: Mercenary

  Nine books by Peter Buck

Marcus Matthew Dean was born June 6, 1944, to a country doctor who had lied about his age to become a World War I aviator. Marc spent his life in the military in one capacity or another. Highly decorated in Vietnam, he later joined the Peace Corps in Central Africa. After several years, Dean became an international arms salesman and eventually hired out his skills as a mercenary in 1975. Successful on missions throughout Africa and the Middle East, Dean and his team of mercenaries became one of the top mercenary teams in the world. On occasion the CIA has been known to hire Dean and his men through his contact Quinnell. Due to the illegal nature of his work, Dean no longer resides in America but rather in Paris. The team is taken on a case-by-case basis subject to the needs of the mission and availability. These men include:

  • Edmond Mazzari: Formerly of the Congolese Army, a large and tough African who speaks with a British accent thanks to his English education.

  • Sean Hammer: Irish American whose Protestant family left Ireland for America when the Catholic South gained independence in 1920. Short and wiry he is one of the toughest and calmest fighters Dean has ever met.

Dean and his men tackle a variety of threats, ranging from preventing Neo-Nazis from building a nuclear reactor in Brazil, to thwarting revolutions, preventing assassinations, and protecting business interests and important people.

  The Marksman (Phillip Magellan )

  Twenty-three books by Frank Scarpetta

Phillip Magellan's family was murdered by the Mafia. Magellan was in the car with his wife and son when the Mafia hit men opened fire on the car. He saw his wife torn apart by a sawn off shotgun and felt his sons brains splatter on him as the dum-dum bullet hit him in the head. Somehow, Magellan, a former Green Beret, survived the assault and with a white-hot rage vowed to stop the Mafia.

Magellan's philosophy is that the current system recycles criminals, releasing them after short terms of imprisonment to commit crimes again and again. He believes that his system is a better way. The verdict is final and the criminals he kills never commit another crime. Magellan is unique in that he will kill law enforcement officers if they get in his way. This means that Magellan doesn't get the level of unofficial understanding that other serial vigilantes get from law enforcement agencies. Magellan's proficiency at disguise allows him to avoid road blocks and surveillance at airports and bus terminals. Magellan travels in and out of America, gathering information in Puerto Rico, France and Mexico and other sources of illicit drugs and contraband smuggled into America. He returns to America and wreaks vengeance against the Mafia operations that he uncovered in his travels.

  The Mercenaries

  Five books by Jon Hart

During the 1960s there was much political unrest in Africa and, in the Congo, mercenaries were hired to help the army (ANC) to quell the unrest. Mike Hoare was hired to lead the mercenary forces in a group he called Five Commando.

From that real-world situation, Jon Hart wrote the Mercenaries, which follows the adventures of Major Robert Kane's team from Five Commando, which are referred to as Killer Commando. In the first book, Black Blood, we see the team fighting the Simba rebel forces in the Congo. Due to political machinations from a general opposed to the use of mercenaries, the team is expelled from the Congo after shooting down an ANC plane that was attacking the mercenaries.

Throughout this all-action, adult adventure series, many of the team are killed and replaced, but there is always the core team:

  • Robert Kane: British commander of the unit

  • Otto Hassell: German fighting man and son of Nazi Iron Cross winner

  • Jack O'Neal: Former CIA observer

  • Davey Tatum: American who left his studies in search of adventure

The men of Killer Commando decide to stay together after being expelled from the Congo and tackle missions such as destroying drug dealers in the Golden Triangle between Laos, Thailand and Burma; rescuing hostages from guerrillas in Ethiopia; and providing security in Mexico.

  Behind the Scenes

Jon Hart is the pseudonym of James Barton. Barton, born in 1938, wrote many western series under several pseudonyms, including Hart the Regulator as John B. Harvey, Apache as William M. James, Heme the Hunter as John J. McLaglen and Lawman as J. B. Dancer. Barton, under his own name, has written the Charlie Resnick crime novels as well as several movie novelizations and even scripts for several British television productions.
