Third Grade Summer Break
Point St. Claire
Nessa had seen him before. Around by the lake, near where they were staying again this summer. She wanted to ask if he’d like to play.
But he always looked like he’d just landed a D- for math, or his cat had run away. Back home in Boston, Missy sometimes went next door to see Mrs. Willows after Mr. Willows went to Heaven, but Nessa would cry non-stop if her tabby left for good.
This morning, when Daddy had cast his line out, it had gotten messed up and knotted real bad. They’d walked together to this shop. Hayes Bait and Tackle the sign out front said.
A bell over the door had tickled and the boy looked up. He was on his knees, stacking shelves near a freezer filled with ice creams. (Choco Tacos were her faves. She could eat them all day long.) When the boy got up, he was tall―as tall as Daddy almost. Dark hair flopped over one side of his face like he always skipped getting it cut.
Daddy handed over the reel. In no time, the boy handed it back, unknotted and all fixed.
Now Daddy was saying “good job” and “much ‘preciated” the way he did if ever Nessa helped on Saturdays when he worked on model boats. She liked to help.
This boy liked to help, too.
Out of nowhere, he looked over and stared straight at her. Nessa felt her cheeks and neck go hot, like whenever she had to read in front of the class. But now she didn’t look away. His eyes were so pretty, like mirrors that seemed to look inward instead of out. And, really, he looked more sad than mad. Maybe lonely.
So, that did it.
Nessa had brought her horse along. Her name was Starshine. White with a beautiful long blue tail. When Daddy and the boy weren’t looking, she unclipped the saddle and slipped it, diamonds and all, into her pocket. In a minute, she would say she’d lost the saddle in the sand. And later, she’d hide it on the beach, somewhere easy for the boy to find.
He’d offer to help find it, and tomorrow or the next day when he gave the saddle back, she’d hand over a reward. The silver dollar she’d earned for sweeping the back porch. That would make him smile.
And then…well, they could hang out. Be friends. Mommy said that summer friends were the best.
That some summers last forever.
