When the first truck spotted the deer, it came to an abrupt halt. The others followed suit reluctantly. The truck and the deer sized each other up. Finally, its trance broken, the deer fled across the path, back into the endless field of corn and the drone of cricket song.
The driver stepped on the accelerator and the four cargo trucks resumed their passage. In the back of one, the tarp fluttered aside long enough to expose the face of a serpent subdued by a resonance field. A tongue darted out and momentarily tasted the air. It let out a hateful white noise, inaudible beneath the sound of wheels on dirt.
