  “Or else?”

  “I already told you.” He stepped forward. “I will terminate him myself.”

  “But Cannon, you already said you can’t do that. It would be murder.”

  “Lily.” His eyes were soft. “I won’t let anything happen to you or our family. I promise you. Can you promise me something?”

  I hesitated, then nodded.

  “Your father is alive,” he said, resigned. “As far as I’m concerned, that news changes nothing. He’ll be transported to The Isle and locked in our prisons. He will not escape.”

  “But—”

  “I’m not finished.” Ranger X held up a finger. “Should we have children, they’ll be ours, and ours alone. That’s my promise to you.”

  I nodded, comforted by his determination. “What do you need from me?”

  Ranger X waited until I looked him in the eyes. Then he knelt and pulled a small box from his pocket. “I didn’t properly propose to you before,” he said with a soft smile. “In fact, you might have proposed to me.”

  I gave a giddy, nervous laugh as my hands clasped over my mouth, and I suddenly lost the ability to properly breathe.

  Ranger X opened the box to reveal the most stunning stone in the universe. Mounted on a pristine, thin silver band, the stone sparkled like moonlight, glittered with the sheen of a thousand stars. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before—completely unique, exceedingly magnificent. Perfect.

  “My love for you is brighter than all of the stars in the universe and greater than the distance to the farthest moon. It’s stronger than the deepest of magics and more consuming than the air we breathe.” X reached for my hand and pulled it to him, slipping the ring gently onto my finger where it belonged. “I love you more than life itself, and I can’t imagine continuing on without you by my side. Marry me, Lily.”
