Wanting to cut through the current ribbon of tension that lingered from the last discussion on whether the heroine should have invoked her safe word or not, she decided to change the topic with a question to one of their newer members.

“Lark, what was your take on the ex-commando heroes in this ménage?”

The normally free-spirited woman was frowning at her own homemade vegan chocolate chip cookie as if she’d just discovered the ingredients had been swapped with bacon fat and half a quart of cream.

“I’m torn.” She pulled at the handkerchief hem of her aqua cotton top. The color set off the blondeness of her hair that was looped up in a ponytail at her crown. “I know the whole point of the story was for the men to take Mattie up to the cabin for protection, but sheesh, they were a couple of hard-asses when she dared question them. Every time she defied them, they’d tie her up and subject her to hours of sensual torture.” Lark chuckled as a few of the members opened their mouths. “Hang on, I get it. That’s super sexy. But I’d have liked for her to have a chance to be heard. You know?”

Oh, she knew. Sometimes protective macho heroes could be overwhelming, even with the best of intentions.

A few murmurs of agreement echoed around the room.

“I hear ya, Lark, but I’m with the heroes on this one.” Matilda Hammond, pixie-haired octogenarian and life member of the book club sat back on the couch, her feet in bright-ruby sandals swinging a foot off the ground. “I like a man that takes control. The more alpha the better. Sometimes that makes him a jerk. Other times he’s just misunderstood. Either way, we got a fabulous capture fantasy.” She rubbed her hands together, grinning.

“Matilda Hammond, if I wasn’t already taken I’d be chasing you all around King’s Bluff.” Quinn sauntered into the room, Mike following at a slower pace, his limp only slight.

Matilda giggled, the dimples in her cheeks out on show. “And I’d let you catch me!” She winked at Mike. “Both of you.”

Chloe choked on her iced tea. Purdy flat out snickered. Adelaide Hammond looked ready to join her twin in a race to get caught.

Okay, so it was really bad she felt jealous of Matilda.

Mike’s eyes crinkled at the edges. “Ladies, the first time we heard about this book club was when a certain librarian was talking about this particular book, so we ordered copies and read it cover to cover.”

Funny how all the women were either biting their lips, staring up at the ceiling, or finding the cover of a book they’d been reading for the last six weeks the most fascinating in the history of published romance.

Yeah, it was a good cover, but it wasn’t that great.

“Well, we can certainly talk about that in more detail later when I get home.” Reagan stood, preparing to hustle the guys out of the room. “Why don’t you—”

Quinn advanced on her. “We were thinking of a more practical demonstration.”

She had a second to hear a couple of soft gasps before she ended up over his shoulder. Whistles and cheers greeted her ears before her stunned brain kicked into gear.

  “Hey, put me down.”

“Now, that’s not strictly what the heroine said, sweetie.” Mike patted her ass, hard.

She spluttered out a reply as women moved their legs and handbags to assist the men in their larger-than-life adaptation.

Purdy had the gall to wave good-bye as she was carried past. “I’ll check on Marvin.”

The wooden floor of the entry hall passed under her gaze.

“I see you claimed your bounty.” Noah’s deep voice rang with bemusement. “You know now that every Dom in this town is going to be expected to abduct a woman at one of these bloody book club meetings. I’ll have to draw up a schedule.” He sighed. “Get out of here before they all come to watch you throw her in the truck.” Quinn stepped through the door a second before it was shut with a loud thud.

“Now listen. You can’t just take me from the meeting!”

“Watch us.” Mike voice rang with the confidence of a man who’d done this before. And damn if that wasn’t sexy as all get out.

Quinn pushed her in from his driver’s side and before she knew it, Mike had her wrists tied behind her before drawing her close.

“You really are kidnapping me?” Her words came out all breathless. She cursed the too girly sound but her body didn’t give a damn. Her clit throbbed with the knowledge they were more than capable of such a feat.

“Yeah, for life.” Quinn leaned close, his warm breath fanning her cheek. “And there’s not enough ransom on earth to make us set you free.” His lips touched her in a light kiss, but one that promised so much for later.

“Our sweet captive.” Mike kissed her forehead, her cheek, and then settled on her mouth. Firm and hard. “Consider yourself caught.”

And that was just fine with her.

She’d played a game of high-stakes loving. And she’d won.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I live in the sunny environs of Sydney, Australia, and share a house with my dog, Letty. Oh, and the flock of cockatoos that take over the backyard each afternoon, demanding their feed of Arnott’s Milk Arrowroot Biscuits. Things get a little noisy around 3:00 p.m. in our household.

My love of romance started back when I was twelve and my mum’s stash of Mills and Boon novels proved too much of a temptation. At fifteen, I decided the life of a romance writer was for me. Some…ah…years later, I’ve clawed together enough gumption to make my dream a reality. When not sitting in front of the computer, I can be found in the garden or enthralled watching a murder mystery DVD. I limit myself to reading other authors’ work between writing my own stories. Books are my “shiny” distractions.
