Hearts Crossing (Woodland)

  With Daveny at his side.

“Here it is,” she said at last, leading Collin to the midpoint of the bridge's subtle arch.

“I wanted you to see this. Privately. I hope you don't mind it's me showing you this rather than your entire family.”

Daveny's fingertips stroked slow and confident along the deeply etched, black letters of a name engraved into the hand rail.

  Sergeant Lance Maxwell Edwards.

Collin's throat constricted. He knew, somehow, that Lance would be commemorated here. Lance had loved his faith walk and Woodland. Collin wasn't surprised by the sight of his brother’s name inscribed as one of the memorialized parishioners.

Still, his eyes stung. Heat clawed at him, pushing for release—so reminiscent of the day of Lance’s burial—and yet leagues different as well.

“I wanted him here. For you. I asked your parents if they'd mind me making the donation to include his name on the bridge. I figured if he was here, you just might keep coming here as well.” Now tears filled her eyes, too. “You don't have to do anything more than just stand here, remember him, and love him like you always have and always will. Just as he loved you.” She dashed the moisture from her cheeks and turned to face Collin directly. “That love goes on forever. But I guarantee you something else, too. God loves you. God will bring you what you need the most if you just listen, and love him, and let him.”

Now Collin traced the letters of Lance’s name—slowly—with reverence. “I want to try, Daveny. I'm here because I want to try. I want to come home to God and my faith again.” His tone went almost fierce—emphatic. “But I have to warn you, I may stumble, and I may fail.”

“We all do, Collin. We all will. That doesn't scare me. What scares me is loving a man who rebukes God. Giving up scares me. Rejecting His mercy scares me, too, because doing so goes against everything I hold most important.”

Daveny’s words were strong, but her demeanor was calm, typically generous. She retracted her umbrella and rain instantly kissed her skin, slicked her hair and cheeks.

But she remained resolute. “Let's make a go of this, Collin. Together.”

How much good fortune, how much happiness, could one person be granted? Collin paid fleeting thought to the idea then dismissed it, letting it fall away. “Do you think you could love me that much?”

“I can, and I do. May I ask you the same thing?” she teased gently, seeking a connection by sliding her fingertips against his, lacing their two hands snugly together.

“I want to marry you, Daveny. I love you completely. Nothing means more to me than being right here, with you, and realizing where that love comes from. It comes from God. We're meant to be. I knew it from the moment I saw you.”

With trembling lips, Daveny nodded. Collin pulled her close and initiated a hard, deep kiss. Sweet rain and salty tears mixed together. Moisture cooled flushed skin; a floral tinged scent of summer surrounded him. He sighed, dissolving into the moment, desperately craving oxygen. Daveny’s breath moved into his mouth and worked through him, filling one craving, stirring millions more that were new and thrilling.

Against his mouth she replied softly, “We’re going to create one heck of a love story together.”

He kept right on kissing her, but couldn’t restrain a rumbling, pleasured chuckle. “Daveny? I think we already have.”
