  Introduction

  Elle

He came crashing into my life like a tornado and turned my world upside down.

With just one look at that face, I was a goner.

I want him just like I know he wants me too… for the night, that is.

He’s got me, hook, line and damn sinker.

He’s the Captain of the L.A. Thunder with a scandalous reputation and the looks to go with it.

He’s persistent but I must be strong.

I must not cave to his wicked, sexy charm.

I will not let him break down my walls.

  Logan

I walked into that room, hobbling like a damn fool and the last thing I expected to see was her.

In that very moment, I knew she would be mine and I would go to the deepest pits of hell to make sure she is.

She’s a good girl with the weight of the world resting on her feisty shoulders.

I will break down her walls and uncover her many secrets, no matter how long it takes.

Watch out, Elle. I’m coming for you.

  Chapter 1

  Logan

“You’re not serious?” My little sister Cassie exclaims in disgust from across my dining room table.

I can’t help but smirk at her, especially when her face scrunches up at hearing about the way I’ve just dump my latest girlfriend. “Hell yeah, I’m serious,” I laugh. “We were only dating for a few weeks and she was already talking about babies and weddings. What the fuck was I supposed to do?”

“Wait?” Jaxon laughs as he buts in the conversation. “Is this the chick you brought to Sean’s wedding?” he questions.

“Ha, no,” I scoff. “Got rid of that one ages ago. She was too needy. Though, with how desperately you were drooling over Cassie, I’m surprised you noticed anything apart from your own dick at that wedding,” I laugh, enjoying how he rolls his eyes before reaching across the table to grab my sister and haul her into his lap.

As awful as it is seeing your little sister with a guy, I’m glad it’s Jaxon. These two have been together since they were kids, minus a few rough years in between but they sorted their shit out and they’ve never been happier and seeing Cass light up every time he walks into a room makes it all worth it, not that I’ll ever tell her that.

“What’s going on?” My brother Sean asks as he comes trudging into my dining room with his wife, Sara, tucked under his arm. He pulls out a chair for her before seating himself and helping himself to all my food.

“Logan just dumped another girl,” Cassie says, filling him in as she reaches across the table and drags her plate to her new spot on Jax’s lap before jamming her lunch down her throat.

“Not surprised,” Sean murmurs before looking up with a smirk. “What’s that? The third one this week?”

“Come on. Give me a break,” I laugh. “I was with her for at least four weeks.”

Jaxon scoffs from across the table. “Bullshit, I’d put my money on two weeks tops.”

“Nah, ten days would be pushing it,” Carter, my other brother calls from the kitchen and by the tone in his voice, I know the fucker is enjoying the attention being on my love life rather than his. Though, as of a few months ago, Carter started dating Cassie’s best friend, Brianna which unfortunately for me, means that when my dickhead brothers need someone to take the piss out of, it’s been coming my way.

“Shut up,” I announce to the table. “At least I’m not pussy whipped like the rest of you.” At that, every male at the table rolls their eyes while the girls grin at their partners in delight.

“What elaborate scheme did you use to break up with this one?” Cassie asks as she gets up from the table and starts clearing away all our dishes, not caring if we were finished with them or not.

“What makes you think there was an elaborate scheme?” I question as I desperately try to hold onto my plate.

Cassie stops in her tracks and turns to look at me with a smug look. “Again… you’re not serious, right?”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I laugh.

She dumps the dishes on the kitchen bench before starting her scraping and rinsing ritual. “Hmm, let me see,” she ponders with a smirk. “There was the time you told that girl you were caught up in a bank robbery and had to skip your date to give a statement to the police, and then there was that other time you faked a water skiing accident and broke your leg. You made me go and buy you crutches when the girl insisted that she wanted to come over and check on you.”

I grin at the fond memory but my response is cut off by Carter. “Oh, don’t forget the time you told that chick your dog was going into surgery with appendicitis,” he says with laughter in his voice.

  “Oh yeah,” I grin.

“Huh?’ Jaxon questions. “I’ve lived next door for as long as I can remember and I know you never had a dog.”

“Exactly,” Cassie laughs. “It was one of his schemes. He borrowed one of his friend’s dogs, shaved half of it and wrapped the poor thing up in bandages.”

“Hey,” I say defensively as I get up from the table to help Cass with the dishes. “That dog loved all the attention I was giving him.”

I boot Cass out of the way and take over as it’s my place. I invited everyone over so it’s only fair that I be on dishes duty, besides my parents would probably roll over in their graves if I was caught neglecting my hosting duties.

The conversation at the table drifts off to Jaxon and how he has been drafted to the National Hockey League, after having an amazing senior year as Captain of the Denver Dragons. Though, the team he just happened to be drafted to… is my team.

  I’m
the captain of the Denver Thunder and have been for the past two years. I’ve just renewed my contract for another four years and can’t wait to get back into the season. Ice hockey has been my life since before I can remember.

I grew up with a lake that ran behind our family home and every year when the water would freeze, I would be out on the lake. When I was six, my father finally agreed to put me in a team and I haven’t looked back since. Joining that team, as awful as a bunch of six-year old’s are, was the best thing I’ve ever done and I have my father to thank for that.

Luckily for Jaxon, when he was twelve, he moved in next door and sixteen-year-old me took him under my wing and turned him into the hockey star he is today… well, right after me that is.

Talk of hockey has me looking up through the kitchen window out to the man-made lake I had built onto my property over the summer. With the chill creeping into the air, I’ve been preparing my new lake to create a whole new bunch of amazing memories.

“Hey, Jax,” I call out over the noise of their conversation.

“What’s up?” he questions as she shuffles Cassie on his lap so he can see me clearly.

I nod my head towards the window. “Lake should be ready,” I grin. “Best out of ten?”

An excited smile comes over his face as he practically throws Cass off him. “Fuck, yeah,” he says before disappearing out the door, no doubt heading out to his truck to grab his skates.

Before we know it, Jax and I are out the back tying up our skates while Cassie stands on the back deck pulling on as many coats as humanly possible before lacing up her snow boots. Honestly, it’s really not that cold but apparently, Cass has a flair for the dramatic.

I look up to notice Sean slowly creeping out onto the lake and making a show of pressing down on the hard ice. “Dude, you sure this is safe enough?” he questions, as usual, making sure to take over the role of safety officer.

“Yes, it’s safe,” I say with an eye roll. I mean, I’m pretty sure it’s safe. I’ve been out on it for the past two weeks preparing it and trying my hardest to keep it smooth, which honestly, with the rain last night, it’s really not that easy. But right now is going to be the first time I’ve actually skated on it, so to tell the truth, I really couldn’t give a shit if it’s safe enough, I’m going either way.

Jax and I grab out hockey sticks and I grab a box of pucks and slide it out onto the ice. Without a moment of hesitation, I step out onto my ice and the feeling is amazing. I’ve always wanted my own ice and it’s finally here. It’s like a dream come true.

I shoot myself forward and fly around the man-made lake. I instantly notice a few places that need a little work and consider how much it would cost to buy a Zamboni but that might be taking the obsession a little too far.

“Fuck,” I hear Jax holler from across the ice. I flick myself around to see what could have possibly caused his outcry when I see him flat on his face before he gets to his feet and begins scraping off a large lump in the ice that I had clearly missed. “You could have done a better job,” he calls out in frustration.

I shrug my shoulders and send a smirk his way. “Sorry,” I say but let’s face it, we all know I’m not really that sorry.

I can practically see his eyes roll from clear across the lake but I ignore it as I get back to enjoying my ice. I grin as I watch Cassie and Carter sliding and stumbling across the ice as they try to put the home-made goals into position at either end and bless their little souls, they finally make it with Jax making a show of lifting Cassie off the ice and placing her safely at the side.

“Come on, pretty boy,” I call to Jax. “Let’s get on with it.”

He skates past with a smirk that I know all too well. “Why so desperate for an ass kicking?” he questions.

“You’ve got no chance, kid,” I tell him. “I’ve got at least ten years of training on you.”

“Ahhh, you see, this is your big mistake. Letting your ego get in the way. It’s all about quality, not quantity, jack ass,” he smirks as he drops a puck to the ice and gets started on trying to show off, no doubt because Cass is standing by the side cheering him on like the devoted fiancé she is.

“That’s Captain to you, kid,” I remind him before shooting past him and stealing the puck right out from under him. “Seems you still have a bit to lean,” I laugh as I shoot down the other end of the ice and shoot the puck straight into the center of the goal.

“That doesn’t count,” Jax whines like the little brother I’ve come to see him as. “We haven’t started yet.”

“What’s that?” I grin. “Do you need me to slow down so you can catch up?”

At that, he shut’s up and presses his lips together, bringing an intense look of concentration over his face. I know he was the star of the Dragon’s last year but that was college hockey, this is the big leagues. The NHL and here, he’s only just getting started and still has a shit load to learn, which no doubt he will, and when that happens, he will be a force to reckoned with and I’m sure he will be right up there, challenging me for my position.

Knowing neither myself or Jax are going to play fair, Carter comes down to the edge of the ice and firmly plants a chair in the snow before declaring himself the official referee. With that, Jax and I meet in the middle and wait for Carter to get the game started.

He lets out an ear-shattering whistle and I drop the puck between us.

Jax’s lightning fast reflexes scoops up the puck before taking off but he hasn’t quite got the speed that I possess. I take off like a bat out of hell behind him and it only takes a few short moments before I’m coming up beside him.

Jax darts to the left while showing off with some fancy-ass footwork that makes me think the idiot is better off in a pair of figure skates. As he gains on my goal, I drop back from trying to chase him so I can get in front of my goal before he shoots.

Seeing my plan being set in motion, Jax desperately takes his shot while trying to beat me to the goal. I watch as the puck starts flying through the air and I force myself forward. I dive for the goal and slide across the slick ice just in time to save the puck from making a home out of my goal.

I quickly catch my breath as I look up at Jax with a grin. “Too slow, kid.”

He rolls his eyes while he waits for me to get up off the ice. The game goes on and on and even though I’d never admit it, I’m pleased that Jax is keeping up with me as it could only mean good things for the team.

Half-an-hour later, we’re both covered from top to toe in sweat, our breaths are coming heavy and we’re tying on nine points each. Cassie cheers and hollers from the side while Sean and Sara are caught up with each other playing tonsil hockey, and I’m pretty sure Carter has given up on refereeing as he has been playing on his phone for the last ten minutes.

The puck gets dropped to the ice and I make my move. There’s no way I’m letting Jax beat me. I would never live it down. I fly down the ice with Jax thundering down the ice behind me like some kind of wild beast.

He darts for the puck but I’m too quick. I sidestep and fly around the slick ice but Jax keeps right up behind me, as determined as ever. His next glide pushes him to my left and I read him like a book.

He darts for me once again while trying to cut me off. His hockey stick flies out towards the puck but I’m ready for it. I shoot the puck forward and watch as it sails smoothly under his stick. I catapult myself into the air and jump over his stick, narrowly missing colliding into him as he cuts across the ice.

“Fuck,” he curses, though I’m not sure if it’s from the shock of me jumping out in front of him or if it’s from the realisation that he’s already lost the game.

A sick grin comes over my face as I race towards the goal knowing he now has no chance of catching up. My stick flies back as it prepares to launch the puck into the goal. I push myself forward once again only to have my blade catch on the lump in the ice that Jax had tripped over earlier.

I go down like a sack of shit while my oth
er leg shoots forward, desperately trying to catch myself yet that only causes me to end up doing a really awful version of the splits. A sharp pain shoots up my upper thigh and I’m pretty damn sure I ripped my ball sack in half.

The momentum from the fall has me sliding across the ice while I try to curl into the foetal position to save myself from any more pain. My whole body slams into Jax’s goal as I let out a loud curse.

I finally come to a stop and try to move, only I can’t. My upper thigh is aching and I’m damn sure I’ve somehow broken my dick. “Fuck, dude. You ok?” Jax asks as he comes barrelling towards the goal which is now a further ten metres down the ice.

He holds out his hand to help me up but I’m not quite ready to move. “Nah, man. I’m good down here. I think I tore a muscle,” I tell him.

At that, his face sobers as he realises the seriousness of the situation. With the season starting in two months, a torn muscle could put me out, especially if it’s not treated properly, and being the Captain of the team, could only be bad news for me.

It better not be as bad as I think it is.

  “Where’s it hurt?” he questions.

“My fucking dick, man,” I practically cry.

A booming laugh is torn from his throat as he doubles over, desperately trying to contain himself. “Shit,” he says once he has finally recovered before indicating to Carter to come and give us a hand. “You think the muscle is actually torn?”

“Yeah, no doubt about it,” I cringe as the boys try to haul me up. “Either groin or high upper thigh,” I explain.

At that, the boys suck in a breath, thankful that it’s not them going through the same thing.
