After taking sick leave for almost a week, Dr. Greene was back at work. And from the look of things, it seemed as though nobody had missed him. But either way, that was one thing that didn’t seem to bother him at all. If anything, the only thing that would seem to matter at the time was nothing other than his invention.

The kind of progress that he was making was tremendous, and it had gotten to a point where he just didn’t care whether the people liked him or not, all that matter was his time machine. Even though it hadn’t gotten to the point where he could have human trials, the most important thing was that teleportation wasn’t a myth any longer. And it went without saying that he was at the center of the whole discovery.

Another thing that the good doctor found to be amusing was the fact that this time round, he was most definitely going to be given the right recognition for something that he had done. And that said, he just couldn’t get that evil smirk wiped off his face. It was something that was out of this world.

Richardson, his boss, seemed to be in the conference room with the other scientists listening to some of the young scientists doing their presentations. Dr. Greene didn’t understand why he wasn’t bothered that Richardson didn’t bother telling him that there was going to be a presentation. Usually, Dr. Greene always took pride in being on of the top scientists in the company. But at the moment, titles, as well as favors, didn’t matter to him no matter how hard he tried.

If anything, the only thing that would have made some sense at the time would have been just to ensure that he was in a position to get some material from the company and get to steal them, taking them back to his home.

One thing about Richardson’s company was that it had billions worth of government funding and so they had virtually everything that they needed. And to put his conscious at ease, it wasn’t as though Dr. Greene was the only scientist who stole raw materials from the company. Heck, the stealing was so bad to the point that the company gave circulars, telling the scientists that the management was aware that they were stealing, but they weren’t mad at all.

What Dr. Greene was in need of was the material that was used to make the serum. It was that very rare, carefully processed mercury which only needed his calibration and a couple of additions to ensure that everything was going to work out rather perfectly at the end of the day.

At the end of the day, what seemed as the most important thing at the time was for the good doctor to walk around the place, pretending as though he didn’t want any damn thing. Having worked in the company for years and years, Dr. Green had managed to master all of the spots where the surveillance cameras had been placed. And that said, he knew just when to duck and avoid and evade.

So he waited until the doctor who was in charge of the chemicals had gone for a short call and Dr. Greene seized his opportunity, making sure that he was doing everything as fast as possible. He quickly dashed in, dodged the surveillance camera and got into the huge fridge, got all the stabilized mercury that he wanted and then got out.

Dr. Greene just realized that he in another life, he would have made such an excellent pirate since he knew just how best to maneuver his way through traps and people and coming out without being seen.

The stabilized mercury that he had managed to steal from his company was going to last him almost five months of experiments and that said, the only thing that was left was for him just to kick back and make sure that virtually every single thing was getting to work out rather perfectly in the end.

“Hey, what are you doing here?”

“Oh, um, I came to see you. You know, it's been a while before I saw you, so I just popped in to say hey. So, hey!”

Dr. Howard took a close look at Dr. Greene, noticing that he was trying way too hard not to look tense. There was a stare down for a little while as if both of them were trying very hard to make sure that they weren’t having an awkward moment at the end of the day.

“That’s strange; you never care about coming here. But if its out of genuine concern, then thank you very much. I am doing fine sir.”

“Well, great. That’s just too great. So I will be on my way.”

That was a close shave that left Dr. Greene out of breath. But the good news was that he hadn’t been busted. The last thing he wanted was to be on the wrong side of Richardson, his boss.

  ***

“Ah, I see you brought yourself back. Tell me, how is everything fairing? Oh, don’t tell me. Let me guess; I think you have had a breakthrough. Am I correct?”

“Yes, you are. And just how did you get to know all about that huh?”

“Oh, it’s simple. You see, I know you. And I had the opportunity to check you out when you stepped through the door. I saw that you looked a little bit jovial than the last time. It’s a good thing that you keep on taking my advice. I am very much impressed, so you know!”

Dr. Greene didn’t want to talk that much since he figured that maybe he might just end up ruining the whole celebratory aura that was starting to form all over the place. Indeed, it had been an incredible victory. And that said, the only thing that would have made some amazing sense at the time would have been just to kick back and ensure that he had a splendid time. And so without further ado, Dr. Greene decided to change the topic, diverting it from his research.

“So, where the heck is my bottle? I think I have earned it already.”

Tori smiled right before reaching down on the bottom cabinet and pulled the bottle out. She had stuck to her promise which she had promised that she wasn’t going to consume a drop and that just made the right doctor smile.

From the look of things, it seemed as though Tori just made him happy. And sometimes, Dr. Greene didn’t have to talk to her to feel as though his spirits were getting lifted. All that he needed to do was to think about her, and a smile appears from nowhere. He even started thinking that maybe he was starting to fall in love but didn’t know any damn thing about it. And that thought scared him very much.

Yes, of course, everyone wanted to fall in love and end up in a happily ever after kind of situation. But from the look of things, it also seemed as though scientists were sworn to working round the clock and nothing good could ever have come out of them trying to have some relationship. It would have just ended up in some problem at the end of it all, something that no one wanted to be associated with at any given moment.

  ***

Dr. Greene didn’t want to leave that bar. It seemed as though the kind of connection that he had made between himself and Tori was getting to a point where it was just out of this world. But that said, the most important thing that would have happened would be to make sure that he was not losing focus as far as the experiment was concerned.

And that said, he proceeded with checking the mercury. He still had to make sure that every single thing was working out rather perfectly. He knew that the same concentration that he used with the rodent wasn’t going to be the same that he was going to use when it came to a much bigger subject.

And it was at that moment, that the good doctor realized that he had to be looking for a much larger subject if at all he wanted to make some incredible progress while he was at it. In the end, what seemed to matter the most was the fact that he should be in a position to get the subject to travel to a different realm and then right back.

And also get to find evidence that indeed, the subject ought to have some proof of coming back from the particular year that it had been sent in the future.

Getting to prepare the serum would take a hell lot of time, and that said, the only thing that would have made some sense would have been to get to work as fast as possible. And so without wasting any more time, Dr. Greene went straight to work.

He took all of his machines out and put on his lab coat and face mask and using a syringe, made sure that he had taken a sample of the mercury right before putting it in a test tube and checked it against the bright light that was shining just above his head. It was pure, and he liked it, just the way it was
. The next step was to make sure that he was in a position to mix it with some biological matter, to make it resemble the human cells and put it into the freezer.

Once he had done so, Dr. Greene made a point of going to his laptop where he continued working as hard as possible to ensure that he was going over the calculations that he had made previously. The good thing about Dr. Greene was that he never took any chances at all, and that explained why his experiments were always top notch and always gave him that all-important result.

  Chapter 4:

  -On to bigger subjects-

The breakthrough was such an incredible thing as far as Dr. Greene’s time travel research was concerned. And now, the only thing that was remaining was for him to kick back and make sure that he wasn’t sleeping on his hard work.

Just because he had figured out that the time travel machine could work. And that the subject could be stuck in limbo, something that was once assumed as imaginary or better yet fictitious, now it was time for the good doctor to make a move.

And that was making sure that he was in a position to make a few changes in the serum, then recalibrating the time machine right before he could look for a much bigger subject to try out. He knew jolly too well that if at all he was to bring in a human being, Dr. Greene had to be one hundred percent sure of whatever it was that he was doing.

And since he was going to be the human subject, he knew that there were no chances to be taken there. They always said that the scientists were never afraid of dying since they believed that life is never destroyed but transformed.

But as far as he was concerned, he knew that he was scared of death. And so it would only be logical for him to get to make the time traveling as safe as possible so as to limit the chances of him dying, or even worse, coming back with horns and claws, or even a tail as a result of being stuck in limbo.

And that said, he made sure that he had fixed the calibration. And since he had been working his butt off over the night, the good doctor had managed to repair the calibration problem as well He found the most efficient dosage of the serum that would be able to transfer a much bigger subject. And that said, it seemed as though the subject that was in question was a monkey. Dr. Greene had managed to get the calculations of the weight of a small animal and worked with that to prepare the serum.

And if at all he was going to be very successful with his plans, then it wasn’t going to be difficult enough for him to stay successful as far as his experiment was concerned.

And now that it was all out of the way, then next problem was getting to find a monkey. Dr. Green knew that the problem was somehow going to present itself at some point. But he always managed to procrastinate about it, saying that he was most definitely going to cross that bridge when he came to it.

And now, it seemed as though he had come to reach the bridge but just like he had been expecting, getting to cross it was becoming somewhat of a problem and he didn’t like it at all.

The one question that he was always scared of asking himself was this one – where the heck was he going to get a monkey to test? Of course, they had plenty of animals back at the company. But it went without saying that it was a monkey that they were talking about, not a flimsy little rat that they could just put in a pocket and walk away undetected.

Even though Dr. Greene always loved not looking into that topic, it seemed as though it had reached a point where he just couldn’t ignore it in as much as he wanted to. And that said, he decided that he should look into the matter as soon as possible.

And without wasting any more time, he decided to make sure that he had gotten his laptop and begun checking for any zoos that were around that area. Even though he had lived in that place for a very long time, Dr. Greene never seemed interested in pretty much every single thing that was going on there. And that said, all he ever wanted was an opportunity just to kick back and do some fresh research.

Thankfully, he found out that the place had a zoo and to make matters even better for him, they were giving out monkey to those warm homes that wanted to adopt. And just like that, Dr. Greene’s eyes lightened up. He apparently didn’t need to worry himself hatching up ideas on how to get a monkey since all of the work had been simplified for him and all he needed to do was to get there and get the monkey without any hustles at all.

And so without having to wait any longer, he immediately took the liberty of getting his mobile phone and calling the zoo keeper as soon as possible.

  ***

The baboon was staring at him without even blinking a little. And that sent cold chills of fear down Dr. Greene’s spine. The last thing that he ever wanted was to engage in a fist fight with a fully fledged primate since he was most definitely not going to win no matter how hard he was going to try. And that said, the only thing that would have made some sense at the time would have been to kick back and make sure that he was looking for a plan.

“Come on doctor, why won't you say hi to the little fellow. You are the proud owner now aren’t you? I am sure Ricky is just feeling a little bit lonely. I am sure a couple of bananas and some love will cheer him up.”

“Little? You call this fellow little?” Dr. Greene said, corking his eyebrow while he was at it.

Since there was no way he could go back to Richardson’s company to steal as he was under twenty-four-seven surveillance, Dr. Greene had decided to go to the nearest zoo to adopt a monkey pet. But the truth of the matter was that he just needed to make sure that he had done all in his power to get the little animal back to the lab for testing.

Besides, the fact that he stole a rat just made him feel as though he was some lowlife and that made him feel filthy. I mean, who steals a rat? Even the most desperate person on earth wouldn’t do that. And even the fact that he did it for a good cause wasn’t going to wash the bad taste from his mouth no matter how hard he tried to do so.

The problem with the ‘little’ baboon was that he was almost his size and getting to sneak him all the way into his home laboratory was most definitely going to be a hustle that he never wanted to engage. But from the look of things, it seemed as though the good doctor was left with no other choice but to make sure that he was doing all in his power to get things done rather perfectly indeed.

And the only way that Dr. Greene was going to make sure that he had everything on lock. And for starters, he was supposed to show the cute animal that he was on his side, something that he was finding it a tad difficult.

“You know what, I think it's for a good reason that they called these animals WILD. You think he will just stand there and smile at me as I try to trick him into going back home with me?” Dr. Greene complained.

The zoo keeper was having fun with his stupid questions since more often than not, the man almost fell laughing. The doctor was just too darn funny as far as he was concerned.

“Look, doctor; I am afraid that’s the only way for you to get this little one to go home with you. Just assume the baboon is a woman you just met at a club and you want to take her home. What will you do to seduce her? Simple, buy her drinks, look your best, be confident and then convince her that you mean no harm. Right?”

Doctor Greene just stared at him without uttering a word. Was he serious? This subject was a bloody baboon, not a woman. The zoo keeper didn’t need to hear the doctor respond to know that the assumption he had made was the worst one in the entire history of bad assumptions. So he immediately swallowed his words as swiftly as possible.

“Ok, ok. Maybe the woman thing was a bad example under such circumstances. But I am too darn sure that you get the point, right?” ok. So what are we going to do? If you want, I can help you take the little one back to his new home.”

“No. It’s ok. You say that I need to make friends with him, right?”

  “Right.”

“Ok then, that’s what I am going to do.”

Dr. Greene figured that it would be very difficult for him to explain to the zoo keeper when he went back to his home and found out tha
t he had a lab and wanted to do some illegal experiments on the poor creature. So he decided that he was going to do all in his power to ensure that he had won the little baboon.

  “So, you were saying?”

“About what?” the zoo keeper asked, still with the delightful smile on his face

“About making friends with the baboon.”

“Oh, that? It’s simple. Just hand him the banana and smile. Then edge a little closer and make sure that you are avoiding the possibility of making eye contact until it allows you to touch him.”

  “What if he doesn’t?”

“Well, he might just rip off your arm.”

There was a long and very awkward silence right before the zoo keeper, for the umpteenth time, burst out laughing like a hyena of a full belly.

“Ah, I am just messing with you man. The baboon is tamed. You can just talk to him and take him home. Oh snap, I can’t get enough of this.”

Dr. Greene hated the zoo keeper almost immediately.
