One article claims: “Hundreds of leading scientists and technologists have joined Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk in warning of the potential dangers of sophisticated artificial intelligence, signing an open letter calling for research on how to avoid harming humanity.”
So, aliens, mechanical or biological, that don't want us as competition. Maybe that's silly, but it would explain the silence in the universe. A ship full of Bug-Eyed Monsters is in hyperspace right now on its way to carry off our sexiest maidens and reduce us to slavery. Or whatever.
Then again, for all you know, you may already be a deluded slave in some machine-driven Matrix!
Chapter 15: Or We’re Just a Projection
If our universe is just a holographic projection, then all bets are off. Assuming it is seems to solve a number of tough problems in mathematics. Or so I’m told (it’s a little bit hard to understand). The universe seems like a rather large screen just to have just one active set on it, but movie makers are a bit strange, anyway.
Chapter 16: We’re Just an Experiment
Perhaps there is a Great Experimenter, running a number of test tubes (our planet being one of them). The GE prevents communications between experiments.
Chapter 17: God is Mysterious
We could take the Bible (or some other religious work) at its word. God made us, and really didn’t feel inclined to create a second planet. Perhaps evolution was guided as some people claim and Earth spent most of its existence as pond slime because, well, God works in mysterious ways.
Chapter 18: So There It Is
After that, I located a copy of Rare Earth : why complex life is uncommon in the universe by Peter D. Ward and Donald Brownlee. I’m assuming it’ll cover the topics raised in this booklet, but much better. I put off reading it until I finished this revision, just so as not to be too influenced or discouraged,
