Rain pelted her and the wind howled, whipping through her thin overcoat. Her legs moved stiffly as she made a break for the building’s awning.

Katy hesitated at the door, trembling.

Oh, God! What was she thinking? Garret couldn’t possibly want her if he was preparing to marry that woman tomorrow. He wasn’t like that, a man who turned off and on at whim. He was honest and loyal and she was probably a vixen in bed and he’d never be able to just turn off his alliance to this woman because Katy said he should while she wore this crazy get-up. She’d learned a thing or two over these past days, and passion was one of them, or her lack thereof back when she’d first begun her studies.

How could throwing herself at him now possibly make a difference? He’d think she was desperate and this was a desperate attempt at saving something he no longer wanted by his middle-aged, lonely ex-wife.

  She was pitiful.

Pitiful is talking yourself out of this.

Tallulah! Katy felt her gut unclench a bit, relief over hearing her friend in her head again. I’m afraid, T.

I know. Me too. Afraid you won’t try just one more time.

He doesn’t love me anymore, T. How could he? I was disinterested and I ignored him for years. Because he didn’t demand me to pay attention to him, I let him go.

Yep, you did. But you don’t know anything about Garret. You’re making those assumptions again that only Katy the counselor can come up with. Love is love and it doesn’t need a diagnosis, just some attention.

Why would he want my attention now after a year? I hardly ever speak to him anymore. I couldn’t… it was too painful.

I don’t have those answers, Katy, and you know that. I only know that this fairy godmother or whatever I’m called wants this for you, so much I can taste it. You’ll have plenty to work out, Katy, either way this goes, but don’t give up before trying. Pride goeth before the fall and all that shit.

Will you be back, T? I mean, I don’t know what I would have done if you hadn’t helped me. Isn’t there some way we can keep in touch? Like some kind of land-to-fairy godmother world line?

Tallulah’s chuckle resounded in her head. Nope, we can’t, but always remember this, okay? I’m always going to be rooting for you, Katy. No matter what you do.

Katy fought back a sob as she yanked open the door. Thanks, T. Thank you.

You’re welcome, Katy. Now go get your man. Hoo rah, Katy my girl, Hoo rah…

  Chapter Seven

“Garret? Open this door! It’s Katy and I need to speak to you.” Katy heard the stir of a chair scraping and the handle on the door turned. Garret’s tall frame filled the doorway as he opened it. His eyes were wary and his jaw was set in the stern line she’d come to know over the past year. God, he looked fantastic. The lines around his eyes, now evident, reminded her he wouldn’t greet her the way he had back in 1983. Her heart slammed against her ribs painfully.

“What’s wrong, Katy? Is it the boys? Has something happened?”

His genuine concern softened her planned fiery response. “No. No, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out. Can I come in?”

He shot her a confused look. “Freak me out?”

Katy pushed past him and ignored the surprise in his question. She slipped around the door and pushed it shut with her back, leaning against it. “We need to talk.”

“Talk?” His voice was cool as he faced her, crossing his arms over his broad chest, but she saw the look of astonishment when he took in her trench coat and heels.

“Yeah, talk,” she shot back defiantly.

He sounded defeated when he answered. “I’m all talked out, Katy. I don’t much feel like talking to you anymore. We did plenty of that once.”

Well, there it was in a nutshell. All the evidence she needed that she’d driven him insane. “No, I did that once, Garret, and I’m done talking.”

Garret’s eyebrows shot upward, though he remained unmoved. “But you just said you wanted to talk…”

Crap, how could she possibly explain… “I know this is an inconvenient time, but I just had to -- well, I had to…”

Garret continued to stare at her, his eyes boring into hers, refusing to budge. She couldn’t think from it.

  Screw thinking, screw everything.

  In other words, fuck it!

Katy ripped off her trench coat and lunged for Garret, throwing her arms around his neck and clinging to his big frame. She held herself against him, her feet barely grazing the floor. Their breath mingled, hot and ragged. His chest heaved against hers. Katy looked him dead in the eye for a long moment just before she glued her lips to his, thrusting her tongue into his mouth.

She heard his sharp gasp, felt his stiff response, but she didn’t stop. Angling her head, she tasted his lips, wrapping her legs around his waist and pressing her naked, trembling body to his. Garret walked forward pushing her flush to the door and with a slow, jerky movement his arms wrapped around her waist as he rested his hands over her spine. Katy sensed his uncertainty, yet felt his desire as he pressed against her, his cock full and thick.

Her nipples tightened and she clenched her eyes shut with relief as she caressed his tongue with her own, shoving her fingers into his hair, digging into his scalp.

Garret’s hand was tentative when he reached for her breast, but Katy tugged at his fingers. Dragging them to her nipple, she whispered, “Touch me, Garret. Now…”

He met her demand, thumbing her nipple with sure strokes, bringing the stiffened peak to a taut, hardened bud.

Katy groaned into his mouth, rubbing her pussy along the hard ridge in his pants, wet and aching. Her arms throbbed from holding herself up, reminding her that her lithe body in the eighties was right back to where it’d had always been. Letting her legs fall from Garret’s waist, she slithered down his body and stood on tippee toe, devouring his mouth. “Take me to bed, Garret,” she said against his lips, lips that now were compliant and consuming hers right back. “Don’t say anything, just show me the way to your bedroom or couch or wherever I can rip your clothes off, and fuck me.”

He was either too stunned to disagree or too shocked for words because he scooped her up and carried her down the hall to his bedroom. Katy briefly noticed the sparse furnishings and the single bed he laid her on. As he lay down beside her, she cradled him to her, for a moment saddened that he had so little in the way of ornamental things, nothing personal to claim this apartment as his own. Garret’s head nuzzled the hollow of her neck, but he made no move to touch her again, so Katy took his hand and placed it between her thighs. His hot breath lapsed on her neck for a moment when he encountered the smooth lips of her cunt. His surprise was evident and Katy knew she had to say something. If she never said anything to him again she had to tell him this much.

“Do you feel that, Garret? Do you feel how wet I am?” His head moved up and down as he began to slide his fingers along her pussy. “That’s because of you, Garret. Because I’ve always wanted only you. No man makes me feel like you do… no man, and I don’t care what happens after this, but I had to show you.”

Garret growled, low and long as he slipped inside the lips of her wet pussy and circled her clit. Katy arched into his hand and cried out as Garret kissed his way to her breast and enveloped a nipple, licking it with silken rasps of his tongue. She clung to his head, pressing herself against him, riding the fingers that moved relentlessly inside her needy flesh. A flash of heat slammed into her, driving her to slide her hand over Garret’s wrist, gripping it tightly as she came. He tugged at her nipple, suckling it hard, pulling at it as he swirled his tongue over it. Katy bucked against him roughly, realizing his clothing was still on. Pulling him from her breast she cupped his face and drew him back to her lips. Her hands found the buttons on his shirt and she tore at them, shoving it aside to make contact with the silken heat of his bare flesh.

Garret groaned again when she kneaded his chest, trailing her fingers over his nipples, lingering at the top of t
he button on his jeans. With the heel of her hand she rubbed his cock, still encased in his pants. Garret jutted against the pressure of her hand, pushing away her hand so he could release himself, but Katy stopped him. Instead she moved away from him long enough to straddle his waist.

As she sat astride his long, thick body, she let her eyes roam over him lovingly, taking in every last hard plane and muscle in his chest. The sprinkling of hair that disappeared inside his jeans and led to his hard cock. Leaning forward, she let her head rest briefly against it, listening to the rapid beat of his heart, absorbing the steady rhythm. Garret’s hands came up to thread through her hair, cradling her head, holding her close. Tears stung Katy’s eyes at his gesture. Garret was willingly holding her now. No matter what happened next, she knew he couldn’t deny his need for her. Whether it was only physical, she wouldn’t ask. She was going to take this moment and not analyze it any further.

With that in mind, Katy slithered along his body, unzipping his jeans and pushing them over his hips. Garret kicked them off, lifting upward when her hands found his hard shaft, encircling it with sure fingers, stroking him hand over hand.

Finally he spoke in a harsh rasp of words, thick with desire “Jesus, Katy…”

Katy smiled, pleased that his body still responded to hers. Bending at her waist, she let her lips brush the stiff flesh of his cock. Garret ground his hips into her and Katy obliged, opening her mouth and taking him as far into the warmth as she could. His hiss of breath rang in the silence of the room when she slid her tongue over him, cupping his balls, now tight and firm. Licking at him, she grazed the flesh just below the head of his cock, grazing her teeth along it, stroking him with her hand as she went.

Garret’s hands gripped her shoulders, his fingers digging into her flesh. “Don’t stop,” he said thickly as his thighs wrapped around her torso, crushing her to him.

Katy’s head bobbed faster, moving to the rhythm of his insistent thrusts, driving him to the edge she’d become aware of over the last few days.

“Stop,” he gasped, shouting the word and grabbing her firmly, dragging her upward until they lay face to face. He cupped Katy’s face in his big hands, tenderly kissing her forehead, her nose, lingering on her lips. Katy rolled over until her back pressed into Garret’s chest. Shielded by the warmth of his solid form, she burrowed into him as his hands slid beneath her and found her breasts once more. Katy lifted her arms upward and wrapped them around his neck, reveling in the heat of his cock against her ass.

Soft, firm lips swept over her shoulders, down along her spine, kissing the globes of her ass. Garret’s tongue snaked out to dip into the cleft of it and Katy shuddered, her nipples tight, her pussy on fire. His lips didn’t stop as he made long passes over the backs of her thighs and finally slid between them, spreading the flesh of her cunt with his thumbs. His hair brushed the soft skin of her legs as he nibbled at the smooth surface.

Katy clawed at Garret’s shoulders when his tongue pushed its way into her, and his lips circled her clit. She whimpered as her hips found a will of their own, thrashing beneath Garret’s hot mouth. Her back arched almost painfully when she felt the fire of orgasm tear through her groin, licking at the sensitive flesh until she screamed as it wound its way upward. Garret rode the wave of her climax, licking her with smooth strokes until her movements slowed.

He pulled himself back up behind her and lifted her thigh over his hip, running his hands over her skin as he nudged her slick entrance with the head of his cock. Katy lifted her ass high, welcoming him.

With his lips pressed to her ear, he whispered in a raw, broken voice, “Are you sure, Katy, because I don’t think I can stop myself. I ache for you…”

Her heart swelled and her eyes clouded with tears she refused to shed now. “Yes… yes, Garret. I’m more sure than I ever was before.” The Garret of 2004 wanted her now and even if it was only for the moment, if when all was said and done they went back to being Katy and Garret Jennings, a ‘used to be couple,’ she would still be sure that loving Garret was timeless. It wouldn’t go away, it wouldn’t fade, it just would always be what was.

Garret shoved his arm beneath her pulling her close and pushing into her, stealing her breath. The thick width of his cock filled her, stretching her deliciously, driving into her slick passage.

Garret’s grip around her waist tightened as his other hand slid between them and cupped her ass, kneading the flesh. She felt his crisp pubic hair scrape against her skin, listened to his low moans fill the room, drowning out the storm that raged outside.

“Christ, Katy… I can’t remember when it was like…” He drifted off, unwilling to share the rest of his thought. Regret pulled at her heart and tore at her gut. If she could have found the words to speak, she might have given him her reasoning, but now she could only feel the swell of him inside of her, stroking her to a heated frenzy.

Riding him, Katy clenched the heat between her legs, pushing Garret to sink his teeth into her shoulder as he fought release.

But Katy could fight it no longer. When he let his fingers find her clit again, she exploded, slamming up against him. She heard the slap of flesh against flesh and it sent her senses reeling. Reaching around her she cupped Garret’s ass and clutched it, driving him into her harder. His whole body tensed and his cock twitched, jerking within her as he came too.

They gulped for air, two bodies heaving against one another, sweat gluing their skin together. Garret was the first to speak, his voice hushed and shaky. “I don’t know what to say…”

Katy bit her lip to keep from sobbing. Surely now regret was sinking in. After all he’d just cheated on his fiancée the night before their wedding. Shaking her head, she told him, “Don’t say anything, Garret. I can’t hear your regret over what we just did because I don’t regret it. Not even a little. I realize we’ve just done something that goes against everything we both believe in, but I can’t summon up enough energy to give a flying fuck.”

Garret stiffened against her. “A flying fuck?” And then he began to chuckle, the burst of laughter warm and resonant in her ear. “I can’t ever remember hearing you use the word fuck, Katy, not in all the years I’ve known you. Maybe once or twice, but tonight you’ve said it more than once.”

Katy smiled with confidence, more sure of herself than ever before. “I said a lot of things when we were married, Garret, they just weren’t the right things. I spent a great deal of my time pacifying situations, pacifying life. I found a tool to handle everything that came my way. If you were angry I had to examine it, if you were depressed I had to find a way to fix it. But I’m not doing that anymore. I hate arguments and I hate that I let that notion keep me from having one with you. I told you how you felt instead of listening to what you said, then I gave you a handy-dandy solution for it. Something I got from a textbook that doesn’t always apply to the passion we all sometimes need to express. I got involved in my work and making the world a better place, but I forgot about my world at home.”

Her voice began to break as she finished, “And that’s why I came here tonight, Garret, because you’re marrying someone else tomorrow and if I didn’t tell you tonight how much I love you, want you above anyone else, I never would. I’ve been miserable for a damn year since we got this stupid friggin’ divorce. I’m the woman you should be married to and I never should have let you go. I should have kicked and screamed and fought you for those fucking dishes, but I should have at least fought. I love you, Garret Jennings. That’s why I’m here.”

Taking a shaky breath she shoved a finger in her mouth to keep from telling Garret how he should feel about it too. She wasn’t going to do that anymore. Let the chips fall where they may, vive la difference and all that crap, as Maddie would say.

“Don’t move a muscle, Katy… We -- we need to get cleaned up before we say anything else.” Garret withdrew from her and went to his bathroom. She heard the water running, but couldn’t summon the energy to move. Goosebumps popped out over he
r arms and she shivered. He was probably in there cursing himself for sleeping with his ex-wife, when he had that vixen all panting over him.

  Bitch…

Katy felt rage begin to seep into her bones as she contemplated the fact that Garret was more than likely going to ship her out of here as fast as he could so he wouldn’t get caught. Boy, wouldn’t that piss old blondie off if she came back here and found them like this? Good, it was good to be pissed off and it was better than being pissed on. Or at least that’s what Maddie said.

Garret came back out of the bathroom with a cloth and handed it to her as he sat down next to her. He was neither smiling nor apparently angry. His face remained impassive and unreadable. Katy wiped up and threw the cloth on the floor, pulling the sheet up over her chilled limbs.

They eyed each other as thunder and lightning crashed outside, sending streaks of light through the room. “Aren’t you going to say anything?” he asked.

“Nope. I said it all. I’m done.”

“So I get to say something?”

“Yep, go right ahead,” she offered magnanimously.

“I don’t know what to say.”

“Well, I can’t help ya there.”

“But you always have an answer for every -- ‘emotional dilemma’ is what I think you used to call it.”

  Katy snorted. “Not this time.”

  “The floor’s all mine?”

“Yep, go ahead and dance on it.” Katy held her breath as Garret’s face changed second to second, formulating words she’d never allowed him to speak.

“Well, you explained what tonight was about.”

  “Yep.”

“C’mon, Katy, help me out here.” He sounded almost whiny, like small children do when they can’t have their way.

She shook her head and smiled. “Nope.”

In a swift motion Garret leaned forward and pulled her to his chest, burying his face in her hair. “Christ, Katy. I’ve missed you these past months,” he said against her head in a fierce whisper.
