  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

THE FIRST AND MOST OBVIOUS PEOPLE I HAVE TO THANK are Garry Pasfield, the owner of the Old Fitzroy Hotel, Graham Hill, Nathan Roche and Graeme Curtis, who guided me through the streets of Woolloomooloo and its contemporary residents. Margaret Avard, of ANU’s Noel Butlin Archives, tracked down the Tooth Brewery records of the Fitzroy/ Revolving Battery Hotel for me. Thanks also to Terese Bareham, teacher at Plunkett Street School, who had me talk to her class and later invited me to launch the anthology of the students’ writing, Me, You, & Woolloomooloo. Simon Drake and Kathryn Mcleod of the National Film and Sound Archives, Pyrmont, provided films and footage about Woolloomooloo. Woolley and I eventually visited the Passmore Museum and my thanks go to Elinor Wrobel, who showed us through her extraordinary collection of paintings, including rare ones of Woolloomooloo. Julie Burke was an important go-between in this instance. And finally my thanks go to many of the old-time residents of the area, Father Ed Campion, Cole, Helen, George, Pam and of course Mandy for her reminiscences of Plunkett Street School and her incisive comments on my drafts.

Special thanks have to go to Phillipa McGuinness for commissioning this companion volume to Kings Cross: a biography, and to Linda Funnell for her meticulous and subtle editing. All grammatical bloopers and factual mistakes are mine.
