Forbidden Light (The Two Hunters Book 2)

Going to my room, I found Taloos sprawled on the inn bed, his face in a book.
“Where’s Kali?” I asked.
Taloos shrugged “Around. She’ll be back. She can’t sit still for very long.” He chuckled. “It’s her roamer blood.”
“She doesn’t want to be a Roamer,” I replied.
Taloos nodded, pushing the book aside. “I know. He rolled onto his back and stared up at the ceiling. “I used to be embarrassed by her,” he said quietly. “I used to think that she somehow made me less than who I was, because of what she is.” His face reddened and his jaw clenched. “Now I realize that I was the fool. Kali is . . . Kali is amazing.” He laced his fingers behind his head. “I was having second thoughts when she plunged a knife through my heart, but she insisted that needed to happen to break the curse.” He shuddered.
“She was right,” I said. “If she hadn't, you might have stayed a stag forever.”
Taloos didn't respond, and I arched an eyebrow. “What are you going to do about it?”
Taloos shrugged a shoulder. “I suppose I’ll marry her. That seems like the right thing to do. She saved my life, and, well, she’s pretty.” His blush deepened.
Unable to hold back my grin, I ruffled his hair. “You could do a lot worse.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Taloos grumbled.
“You might have had to settle down with a doe.”
The room filled with flying books and Taloos’s swearing, so I quickly left the room. Taloos would be fine.
But would Glacia?
The wolf lay outside her door, head between its paws. It lifted its head when I approached, and edged away from the door. I didn’t mind having the animal around, but I’d have to study it further, later. Was it one of Stagfort’s cursed citizens? I didn’t know.
Worry returned to gnaw at my stomach when I entered Glacia’s room. She was already asleep, her legs pulled up to her chest. Her face showed worry, a line creasing her forehead.
Something was still wrong. The runes were still etched in her wrist, glowing a faint red. Her magic was no longer blocked, but it had dimmed. She had locked the dark magic away within herself, leaving a diminished amount of enchantment left. She was still strong, but the enchantment was a shadow of what it could be. I swallowed, feeling sick at the thought. Why couldn't I see it? One of my abilities was seeing the darkness in others, yet I hadn't seen it in Glacia. I still couldn't see it.
She still had so much to learn. Still so vulnerable, so inexperienced.
I inhaled sharply, and settling back in a chair, waited for her to wake up.
It didn't matter if she was fragile. It didn't matter how much time she needed to learn. Because I would be there. I would keep her safe.
I still felt the purpose of the Elite, burning brightly in my veins, but a new, stronger purpose coursed through me, filling me with renewed determination.
I would protect my light. My heart.
My everything.
