Somebody Like You: A Lesbian Romance
Page 11
Grace had gotten her scholarship at Cal Tech. Her relationship with Grace lasted until she went off to college. Grace went through her fair share of women in school, but in her junior year she met Julie Warner. Grace told her parents that Julie was the real thing and she would do whatever necessary to hold onto that love.
Michelle’s mother still wasn’t completely on board with her relationship with Sydney, but she never cut them out of their lives. As a matter of fact, Celeste and Bob visited California often. They had flown out to see their granddaughter graduate from college and they were now in the spare room getting dressed.
“Get a move on, girls or Grace is going to be late.” Celeste yelled.
Grace was in the living room where Bob was taking picture after picture with her and Julie.
Sydney and Michelle came out of the bedroom.
“Are you crying again, mom?” Grace asked with a laugh.
“Leave me alone. It was just yesterday you were born.”
Grace rolled her eyes and Sydney took Michelle’s hand trying to give her comfort.
“Come on you two. I want a picture with Grace and her parents,” Bob said motioning them to stand near the fireplace.
Grace stood in the middle of Michelle and Sydney with her arms around their waist. Over the last four years, Grace had come to love Sydney as if she were another mother. Sydney gave her guidance and financial support so her dreams could come true.
“Now one with mother and child.”
Michelle held Grace’s hand and smiled into the camera. In the last four years her life had changed completely. There wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t count her blessings. Michelle ended up at Willow Studios in the end and she loved working for the women that owned the studio. Even Sydney tried to be at home as much as possible. They fell into a comfortable life sharing the important things in life, love.
“Can we leave now?” Grace asked growing impatient.
“Yes. You and Julie go ahead and we’ll see you both up there.”
“Okay, girls,” Bob said. “Let’s get going.”
Sydney went to the kitchen and filled a small cooler with some bottles of water. “Anyone want any snacks for the road?”
“Honey, we all ate a big breakfast. You can’t possibly be hungry again?”
Sydney came out of the kitchen carrying the cooler and snacking on a piece of fruit. “Who says?”
“Your wife has some appetite, Michelle,” Celeste said chuckling.
It took her mother years to consider Sydney her spouse. It didn’t hurt that Sydney had saved her granddaughter and treated her daughter with love and respect. She now understood why her daughter fell in love with this amazing woman. Although she would never say the words out loud to either one of them.
Michelle’s sister never came around to the fact that her sister was a lesbian, but the lost relationship never affected Michelle. If they had ever been close, Michelle might have felt the loss. Since they never were, there was nothing lost.
They got into Sydney’s car and headed to the college for the graduation. Julie’s parents had arrived earlier and saved them seats.
“Did you get a lot of pictures?” Mary Warner asked Michelle.
“My dad did. I’ll email you a set,” Michelle said whispering in Mary’s ear.
“The girls found an apartment. Did they tell you?” Mary asked.
“They told me. I haven’t told Sydney yet. She hated when Grace was away at school and I don’t have the heart to tell her that she’s moving away for good. Sydney will have no one to watch sports with and play video games.” Michelle chuckled.
“They never grow up, do they?” Mary laughed along with Michelle.
Sydney leaned over to Michelle’s other ear. “What’s so funny?”
“Nothing, honey.”
The girls ran off to parties with their friends after the ceremony. The two sets of parents and grandparents decided to go to dinner together.
“Are the girls coming back to someone’s house tonight?” Sydney asked as they drove to the restaurant.
“Mary said they were going to end up at our house later tonight,” Michelle said.
“Well, at least she’ll be home tomorrow.”
“Honey, Grace and Julie found an apartment.”
“They did?” Sydney asked surprised. “Why didn’t anyone tell me?”
“No one wanted to upset you.”
“I’m not upset. I know they want to start their lives together.” Sydney sighed. “I can’t blame them, but I could have bought a condo and they could have rented it.”
“You can’t keep buying things like that for Grace.” Michelle insisted. Grace was now driving around in a brand new car that Sydney bought her for graduation.
“Why not? She’s the only child I’ll ever have.”
“Look at it this way,” Michelle whispered to Sydney. “We have the house to ourselves again.”
“Yeah, but I will miss that goof being around.”
“She’ll visit, Syd.” Michelle squeezed her hand. “You know that. Besides, they may have children someday for you to spoil all you want.”
“Yeah, but at the holidays Julie is going to want to be with her parents.”
“Julie doesn’t have a big family. How about we ask them to come to our house for the holidays? This way we will all be together.” Michelle squeezed her hand. “Okay?”
“I like that idea.” Sydney looked over at Michelle and took her hand. “I always hoped I would find somebody like you, but instead you found me again. Thank you for coming back into my life, Michelle. I love you.”
“I love you too, Syd. Always and forever. ”
The two women kissed to seal their love for each other.
