Kione gives a curt nod. “I’m sure we’ll work we’ll together. I’ll try to teach you all that I can—assuming, of course, that you do pay attention.” She smiles when she thinks you’re not looking, though, and you can tell that she’s very pleased.

“Many carats! I am the most excited to work with all of you. Have some lollipops.” She fishes in her pastel satchel, then hands you four perfect geodes of transparent rock candy.

Even the smallest pieces of it turn out to last for ages.

Aya jumps up and down excitedly. “This is so cool! I’ve never mentored anyone before ever but I’m super excited. I’ll try to teach you a whole lot of things, I promise.” To celebrate, she gives everyone little cans of pineapple juice. (You learn that it’s her favorite drink!)

Before the siege, tourism was a popular industry in your town, and it picked up again after the town was rebuilt. Okay, so the beaches aren’t the best for swimming, but you have the brisk sea air, the large and tender fish, and boating!

And one of the restaurants in town has karaoke. In the summer, it’s a tourist thing, but you’ve gone with your friends a few times, so you know from experience that it’s a great way to get people to bond with each other.

Charmaine puts sass and personality into a song that’s more talking than singing; Shani cheers everyone on, and Malou, finally convinced to sing, has a soft, sweet voice.

You have fond memories of long winter evenings when the cold sea wind howled outside, playing board games with your mother and Henny. A board game party seems like a great way to make new friends. Your squadmates help you get snacks: crackers, little round green candies filled with sugary mint jelly, sliced-up fruit, cubed cheese…

Of course, not all of the girls who filter in from nearby rooms adhere to the traditional rules. A girl with telekinetic powers influences where spinners stop on several occasions. Candlelight, a small pudgy second-year with pastel hair exaggerates feigned clumsiness to knock over other people’s pieces. And everyone keeps an eye on Pocketwatch—because if she’s moved even a centimeter, she might have used her time-stopping abilities to alter a dice roll.

It’s fun to get together with new friends and discover new uses for your powers…and, of course, it’s fun to cheat at board games.

At home, you could never keep your nails painted for more than a day, because the salty breezes would always ruin it. Here, though, a coat or two of polish can stay on for as long as a week! Pretty amazing, isn’t it?

With that in mind, you decide to have a spa-themed party.

Char paints Shani’s nails with a funky geometric design that she swears is straight off the runway.

One girl brings tea for everyone and lets you use her good porcelain cups. Another shows up with lemon cookies—hurrah, cookies!

Even Malou gets into the act, letting Pocketwatch, a second-year student, paint her nails with a clear polish that has just a hint of sparkle.

The next day is your first breakfast at the academy. There’s so much food you’ve never seen before, so you’re the last to arrive at the table where your squadmates are sitting. Shani licks the frosting from breakfast cupcakes; Malou, an intense expression on her face, eats a croissant with a knife and fork. Charmaine’s eating fish eggs on toast and a few tiny cucumber sandwiches on dark bread.

“Hey, why don’t we go to an activity as a group?” Char suggests.

“Let’s let Verdie pick,” Shani adds. “She’s as fair as anything.”

You acknowledge her compliment with a smile, then wrinkle your nose in thought. “We could…”
