“Do you think that will keep out the bullets?” Bobby asked.
Will frowned slightly. “Well, it should help, I don’t know if it will keep them out entirely.”
“Before we head for the gates we should try and get my family and any more people we can.”
“Emmerich it would be suicide for us not to drive this straight out of here. If we go roaming around the camp in the car, we won’t even reach the gates.” Will advised.
“I am not leaving without them Will, I have told you that.”
“Tell him Bobby, it's suicide.”
Bobby nodded. “Emmerich I would have to agree. If we try driving around the camp, they will shoot us.”
“Bobby we have to do this. If it were your wife, you wouldn’t leave her would you?”
“I’m not married.” Bobby replied.
“But if you were?”
Bobby sighed, he knew he had to tell the truth. But his attention was caught by something else.
“Emmerich listen to me, please. I am your friend. To have any chance of living we need to leave straight away. We can tell the Allies about this place and they can liberate the people here. Even if they are alive, we cannot save them.” Will tried.
“Bobby answer me.” Emmerich said, ignoring Will.
Bobby did not reply, he was too busy watching the crowd of people that were moving towards him. It was the strangest feeling, it couldn’t be Chase that was walking towards him.
Mengele was leading the way towards them alongside Wernher Von Braun and what appeared to be a very close relation of Von Braun. Next was a man who Bobby did not recognise and then it was a man that was Chase’s double, he was walking beside two prisoners who also looked incredibly familiar.
“It can’t be...” Bobby said under his breath.
“What?” Will asked, before looking to the oncoming Nazis.
The rain was pounding down on the cabin the car and the mud all around them, it was almost deafening.
“This is Bobby Stinson, he is building us a time machine.” Mengele announced.
Bobby looked at Sarah she smiled at him, he was too confused to smile back. She looked incredible, he had felt hopeless since the moment he had got here, but she almost made him feel safe.
“Josef I didn’t realise that you had a team here already working on this project, could we have a word inside the cabin?” The younger Wernher asked.
“Certainly, will the rest of you keep an eye on the prisoners?”
Chase nodded.
Both Wernher's and Mengele disappeared inside the cabin leaving Emmerich, Will, Bobby, Sarah, Edward, Chase and Jacob outside.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Bobby asked, staring at Chase.
“You know them?” Will asked in confusion.
“Will?” Chase replied.
“Yes.”
Chase looked stunned.
“We are here to save you Mr Stinson.” Edward interjected.
“Who are you?” Bobby asked.
“I am Edward Teller.”
“The bastard that sent me through time?”
“Yes.” Edward said blushing.
“And Wernher is working with you?”
“That’s right.” Edward confirmed.
“How are you getting me out?”
“Wernher is telling him that we need more workers.” Edward advised.
“What about Will and Emmerich?” Bobby replied, gesturing to his fellow prisoners.
“We will try and save them too.” Edward replied.
“Why have both Wernher’s gone inside with him?” Jacob interrupted.
“Jacob?” Bobby asked in surprise, he hadn’t realised it was Jacob until this moment.
“Yes an honour to meet you.” Jacob replied sarcastically. “Why have they both gone inside?” He repeated. “Edward take Miss Salmond, Mr Carter and Emmerich back to the car.”
Edward looked baffled at his demands.
“Now!” He yelled.
Edward nodded, Will and Sarah followed him to where Bonnie and Clyde were waiting with the car. Emmerich did not move.
“What’s the problem?” Chase argued.
“The problem is Chase, we don’t know what he is saying to them, and we weren’t even supposed to be telling Mengele about the generator.”
“Wernher hates me.” Bobby stated.
Chase suddenly looked concerned as an alarm pierced the air of the camp.
“Shit!” Jacob yelled. “Does this car work?”
“It should.” Bobby replied.
“Let’s go then!” Jacob yelled.
“Give me your gun.” Emmerich stated as he looked at Chase.
“Why?”
“I’ll draw their fire.”
“What?” Chase replied completely bewildered.
“Just do it Chase.” Bobby snapped, Chase did as he was told.
“I can’t leave without them.” Emmerich stated looking at Bobby.
“They are dead Emmerich.” Bobby tried.
“I will not leave without them.”
Chase got into the driver’s seat and Jacob sat beside him.
“Emmerich they are dead. Mengele told me.” Bobby insisted.
“Well then I have no reason to live.” The door of the cabin opened and both Wernher’s and Mengele came out with guns. “Go Bobby.” Emmerich yelled, before firing a shot at the cabin door.
Bobby moved as quickly as his hip would allow and sat beside Jacob, as Chase set off towards the gate they had just come through. They could hear gun fire all around them, but they couldn’t see where it was coming from. Chase drove towards the gate but was diverted as an explosion hit the ground just in front of the car. The noise almost deafened them, but they could still make out the sound of the alarm and gunfire.
“Tank!” Jacob shouted, it had just come into sight in front of them.
Chase put his foot down and accelerated towards the gate, they could see the other car breaking through the gate and being peppered with bullets.
“Who’s in the other car?” Bobby asked.
“Bonnie, Clyde and hopefully Sarah, Edward and Will.” Chase replied.
They could see a hail of gunfire hitting guards at the gate, it was coming from the other car.
As Chase drove through the gate, there were no guards left standing. They had been mowed down by the gunfire from the first car. When they got on to the road, they were directly behind a tank which was chasing the other car.
“Get off the road!” Jacob yelled.
Chase swerved violently to the left. He could not see out of the side windows and was stunned as the other car came from the his right hand side. The car flew across the road in front of them and down a steep hill to the left, Chase followed.
“A body just came from the car!” Bobby yelled.
Chapter 34
Bonnie and Clyde were staring at the guards by the gate. They were all heavily armed, with machine guns, and they could make out the shapes of tanks in the distance. They were both terrified, and they both wanted to leave, the rain was still thumping down and a flash of lightning lit up the sky in the distance.
Bonnie looked to her left and saw Edward, Sarah and another man moving quickly towards them.
“Here they are!” She yelled excitedly.
Before Clyde could reply, the siren sounded.
“Shit!” He yelled.
He reversed the car and headed in their direction. Bullets began to pepper the car and they both saw Edward go down grasping his stomach. Sarah and the other man did not seem to notice, as they sprinted and dove into the back of the car.
Clyde accelerated as quickly as he could towards the gate, he pushed Bonnie’s head down to ensure that she wouldn’t be hit. “Stay down! You two, use the guns and shoot those fucking guards!”
“What about the doctor, we can’t leave him Clyde!” Bonnie screamed.
“We will all die if we stop for him.” Clyde yelled.
Will quickly grabbed on
e of the machine guns and leant out of the window behind Bonnie. He began returning fire at the guards positioned at the gate. As the car crashed through it, he felt a bullet hit his left shoulder, he managed to hold onto the gun, but let out a whale of pain.
“Come on Sarah! Start shooting!” Clyde barked.
She had been too scared to pick up the gun, but did as she was asked. She leant out of the window directly behind Clyde, and fired backwards towards the gate. She saw three men go down as they were hit by her bullets. A tank appeared as if from nowhere, it came down the slope on the right-hand side of the car and pulled onto the road directly behind them. Both she and Will pulled themselves back in the car.
“Clyde there’s a tank right behind us, do something!” Sarah yelled.
Clyde scrunched up his face, what the hell was he supposed to do? He swerved right off the road and up the slope where the tank had just come from. They felt the explosion from the road, it had decimated the ground exactly where they would have been had Clyde not swerved off the road. He saw another tank coming down the slope and pulled right back towards the road, he sped just behind the first tank. He saw another car on the road, there was only a few metres between the first tank and the other car. He put his foot down as hard as he could and managed to speed in front of it. He drove as quickly as the car would allow down the grassy slope on the other side of the road, towards the forest.
Sarah looked back at the other car which was following closely behind. Bobby, Chase, and Jacob were all inside, just behind them was a tank. The car that Clyde was driving hit a bump, and Sarah’s gun went off in her hands spraying the inside of the car.
The world around her seemed to slow down to a standstill. She looked at Will and saw that he was bleeding, but it appeared to be the wound that the guards had inflicted. She looked in front of her and saw that there were bullet holes in the front bench, the gun had been pointed directly in front of her, towards where Clyde was sat.
Bonnie’s screams were piercing. “Clyde!”
Clyde was slumped forward against the wheel, and the car continued on its path towards the forest.
“Bonnie take the wheel!” Will yelled, Bonnie ignored him.
Sarah climbed over the front bench and struggled to open the driver’s door. She pushed Clyde from the car. Bonnie screamed and hit out at her.
“I had to!” She yelled, taking the wheel and speeding towards the forest. Her hands were shaking and Bonnie’s wailing was distracting, but she pushed Clyde to the back of her thoughts.
Bonnie continued screaming, as Will held his shoulder that was oozing blood. Will had been pale when he had first jumped into the car. Having spent so much time locked up in the dark cell it was hardly surprising. He had now become a ghostly shade of white, the blood was flowing out of his arm as if it were a tap that had been left on.
They were close to the forest when the explosion hit the ground in front of them, the force of the blast sent the car up in the air like a ping-pong ball, the car flipped in mid-air before landing upside down just short of the tree line.
In the other car they were utterly helpless, they couldn’t see the tanks behind them and they had no guns. As they saw the other car flip in mid-air no one dared to speak a word. Chase continued towards the tree line, whilst bullet holes kept appearing in the sheet of metal that Bobby had placed over the back window.
“We need to get out at the tree line!” Jacob yelled.
“And go where?” Bobby replied.
“Hopefully they still have the wormhole generator. If not then we’re fucked!” Jacob yelled.
“They couldn’t have survived that.” Bobby replied.
When they reached the tree line, Chase was first out of the car. He headed towards the other car in an attempt to help any survivors.
Jacob hurriedly pushed Bobby from the car, and jumped out as it exploded from the shell fire.
Both Jacob, and Bobby were thrown through the air and into the forest, obscured from sight.
As Chase reached the car, he saw Bonnie screaming in the passenger seat, she was covered in blood. In the back seat, Will was bleeding and looked as though he was death himself. Sarah appeared by his side, her head was also covered in blood. “You get Will, I’ll help Bonnie.” She instructed. Chase nodded and did as he was told, he opened the back door and dragged the unconscious Will behind the tree line. Sarah did the same with Bonnie, who was still screaming. As Sarah pulled Bonnie away from the wreckage, Bonnie kept trying to dig her nails into Sarah’s arms.
“We need to get deep into the forest.” Chase advised, as he continued to drag an unconscious Will away from danger.
Sarah was struggling to drag Bonnie, she was still trying to lash out at her, but she managed to pull her away from the Nazis sight.
Chapter 35
As they reached the Wallace Monument, the crowd was five or six deep. Thousands of people had come to see the President’s visit. Faraday, Jane and Clint searched in every direction for any sign of Guy or Scarlett, but they couldn’t find them. Clint tried to phone her again, but she wasn’t responding, she probably couldn’t hear it over the crowd he reasoned.
The bright sky had now been replaced by dark clouds, it looked as though it could become a downpour.
“We need to find her!” Jane exclaimed. She was close to tears and had not spoken to Faraday since leaving the house.
She was drowned out by the sound of cheers coming from the crowd, as a black Lincoln Limousine pulled up in front of the Wallace Monument. Through the crowd, they couldn’t see who had stepped from the car, but they assumed it had been Abaddon.
“Try her phone again!” Jane told Clint.
He did as he was asked, while Jane gave Faraday a dirty look.
“She’ll be okay.” Faraday told her, trying to convince himself as much as anything else.
“If she isn’t I never want to see you again!” Jane snapped, the tears were now streaming down her face. Faraday had never felt so guilty.
“Scarlett, it’s Clint!”
Jane and Faraday stared at Clint, unable to hide their delight.
“I’m with your parents you can’t go through with this. We are outside the Monument.”
“Give me the phone.” Jane snapped. Clint did as he was told and handed it to her.
“Scarlett, its Mum, don’t be so stupid. You could get yourself killed.”
Faraday turned his attention to a disruption coming from the front of the crowd, there was a loud bang, and people all around were screaming. Faraday pushed his way to the front and saw Guy lying beside the car holding a suitcase. A guard stood over him with a gun in his hand.
People all around were trying to run away from the scene, Faraday was almost crushed by the terrified crowd. He fell to the ground, falling through the barrier that separated the people from the car, and he turned his head to face Guy.
Guy looked to be in intolerable pain, he was writhing on the ground in a pool of blood that was forming around him. The sounds of screaming filled the air and Faraday was able to see Abaddon rushing towards his car.
Faraday again turned his attention to Guy, who was smiling now. He noticed Faraday and winked at him.
The sound of screaming was silenced and replaced by the deafening sound of the explosion. Guy had done it.
There was the brightest flash of lightening that Faraday had ever seen, the whole sky seemed to light up causing him to close his eye. When he opened it again, the crowd was gone. The car was gone. Guy was gone. Abaddon was gone.
Faraday managed to struggle to his feet, and turned to see Clint staring up at the Wallace Monument. Faraday turned to look and saw that the Monument was no longer there. It had been replaced by an enormous statue of Adolf Hitler.
Chapter 36
They stopped to rest after they had been walking for hours. Will had woken up, but he was struggling with the bullet wound in his shoulder. With each and every step he took he seemed to be swaying more and more. Chase had been carr
ying Bonnie for the past hour, she struggled to walk anyway, but following the car crash she couldn’t move her legs at all. She had been weeping into his chest for the entire time that he had been carrying her.
He sat her down on a log and helped her light a cigarette. Will stumbled and fell on to a patch of grass; he was exhausted. Sarah slumped down against a tree, she had been crying too. The blood that covered her face was dripping on to her clothes.
Chase sat down beside Bonnie and put an arm around her.
Bonnie took a deep pull from her cigarette and leant into his chest to continue weeping. Chase gently excused himself and walked over to the patch of grass where Will was lying.
“Will are you okay?” Chase asked, unsure as to what else to say.
“I got shot.” He replied, removing his hand from his shoulder. It wasn’t necessary, Will was covered in his own blood, and he had been getting paler for the last couple of hours. Chase removed his jacket and ripped off a sleeve which he tied around the wound.
“What happened to the others?” Sarah asked.
“I didn’t see them after the explosion. If they made it out then I’m sure they will be heading this way.” He replied hopefully. “Where is Edward?”
“He was shot before we got to the car.” Sarah replied, still crying.
”Was he dead?” Chase asked.
“I don’t know, I didn’t look back.”
“You killed Clyde!” Bonnie wept.
“It was an accident, we hit a bump, and the gun went off.” Sarah cried.
“Bonnie do you still have the generator?” Chase interrupted.
She nodded.
“Do you have a gun?”
She nodded again.
“Can I have it?”
She reached into her jacket and sat the gun on the log.
“I need to find the others.” Chase announced.
Chapter 37
As the crowd disappeared, so too did any evidence of the explosion. Jane was stood beside Clint, with a baffled expression on her face. Scarlett was stood up the hill, slightly closer to the monument than the others. When she saw them, she ran down the hill towards them.
