  “I can’t argue with your second point. He is an asshole with his money. He tried to pay me off to skip town tonight,” Liam continues.

  “You refused?”

  “I couldn’t leave you behind.”

  I blush and instantly become embarrassed.

  “Besides, you’re already rich. You don’t need his money.”

  I meant it as a joke, but it came out crass. I wasn’t trying to offend him; I was trying, and failing, to lighten the mood.

  “You think all I care about is money?”

  Liam’s not trying to hide the anger in his voice anymore.

  “No. I was just making a joke.”

  “Do you have to always be so… so…”

  Something inside me snaps. Sex had made me lose my grip on my anger. Now that the afterglow was wearing off, I was remembering how angry I was at Liam and how frustrating he can be.

  I throw Liam’s coat on the floor and toss what’s left of my drink in his face. It’s a silly, dramatic gesture, but it feels good. The bartender glances our way, as do a couple sitting to our right. No one else seems to notice. Well, almost no one. The guard comes bounding over with heavy lumbering steps.

  “Shit,” I say.

  Liam follows my gaze. He grabs my cuffed hands and starts to pull me through the club. Instead of heading towards the door, he pulls me into the mass of people. The crowd is packed tight with sweaty, half-naked girls and their male companions.

  As Liam drags me along, he bumps into a man who shouts at him. I can’t hear what’s said over the music, but the man looks like he wants to fight. Liam ignores him and keeps walking. The man grabs his female companion territorially as if Liam might steal her.

  As we pass, the girl shoots me a dirty look. I don’t know what I did to piss her off and I’d rather not know. I just want out of here.

  We move slowly through the crowd. People are packed into the club like sardines. I brush up against a topless girl covered in shimmery body paint. I end up with pink glitter all over my black dress and right arm. If anyone in the club finds it odd that a man is leading a girl wearing handcuffs and covered in glitter through the room, no one shows it. My guess is they’ve seen stranger things in this place.

  We reach the front of the room. There’s a small stage illuminated with red spotlights. Two naked girls are putting on a sex show for the men watching. One is wearing a saddle like a horse, while the other girl wields a riding crop. A sharp hiss cuts through the air as the crop cuts into the girl’s backside.

  I cringe and look away.

  Blindly, I follow Liam. He cuts through the middle of a group of people who look irritated by our presence, then slips around the edge of the stage. A girl wearing a red silk robe exits a door hidden behind a curtain. I pray it’s an exit and not another private room. Liam heads straight for it.

  I glance behind us. The bouncer is nowhere in sight. We must have lost him in the crowd. Liam grabs the door before it can shut. He pushes me inside. We’re greeted by the sight of ten naked girls putting on makeup. They all turn to stare. I try not to look like I’m gaping, but it’s hard. How often do you open a door to find a room full of naked prostitutes? I suppressed the urge to laugh. I bury my face against Liam’s back as he leads me to the back of the room.

  “Excuse us, ladies,” he says as we exit through the back.

  The alley is dark and damp. A rat runs in front of us. I jump aside, not noticing the guard standing to our left.

  “No customers out here,” the man says. “Back into the club.”

  It takes me a second to realize, he was speaking to me.

  “Did you hear me, you stupid whore? Get back to work.”

  Liam didn’t bother trying to talk his way out of the situation. His left fist flew through the air, hitting the guard square in the nose. The man stumbled back. Liam wasted no time hitting him again. He fell into the trash and didn’t get back up.

  “C’mon.”

  Liam grabs my hand and leads me to the end of the alley. Two cabs pass, before he’s able to flag one down. Trembling with adrenaline, or rage, or a combination of the two, Liam pushes me inside and slides in beside me.

  “What now?” I ask.

  “Now we strike back before Tony has time to figure out what just happened.”
