She huffed. “You once told me you always expect a bad outcome so you’re never disappointed. Just do that now.”
“Can’t,” I said honestly. “I want things too much now. You taught me that. That I can have love and happiness. I want them all the time now. Now I expect only good things.”
Again she leaned against me and kissed my shoulder in silent acknowledgment that I made her happy, too. Which mostly shocked the shit out of me every day, but it was true.
The time ticked down in my head. We were well past the three-minute mark.
I stood up and handed her a test, while I took mine. I’d made her buy two, not as a failsafe but because we were in this together.
“We look on three,” I said and tried to contain the surge of hope I was suddenly feeling. “One. Two. Three.”
I turned the test in my hand and saw the word: positive.
I glanced quickly at her and there were already tears streaming down her cheeks. She nodded emphatically.
We were pregnant. I felt the tears rush to my own eyes even as I reached for her hand and lifted her until she was in my arms.
Together we looked at Jake. “You’re going to be a big brother,” I told him, my voice nearly cracking from emotion. “Don’t be an asshole to the kid.”
Joy laughed and hugged me again. I thought maybe we could stay here, in this bathroom, for the next nine months. Just the three of us while we waited for what came next.
But of course it was Christmas. There was a special breakfast to cook, presents to open, and then we were heading over to Wes and Penny’s for dinner later that night.
We would tell them. About the baby.
Then they would have to draw straws for who would have the privilege of naming him or her.
Because Joyful Knews Darling and Welcome Baby Darling were utterly incapable of it.
“I love you, Joy,” I whispered into her ear. “So much.”
“I love you too. Merry Christmas,” she said and kissed my cheek. “I hope you like your present.”
