CHAPTER ONE
Carrie
Still in the airport, riding the wave of our newly minted engagement, Reid and I walk hand in hand as we travel to the customs line talking about everything from our new cat and dog, to Paris, and finally my father, because I need to talk about him. I need to clear the air with Reid. I need to share the experience of seeing my father with Reid. The line stalls and I can’t hold it back. “I know we talked about this on messenger on the plane, and I know he’s a bad subject, but the meeting with my father was the strangest thing.”
“Strange how?” he asks, concern furrowing his brow.
“I don’t know if strange is even the word I’d use. More like unbelievable. My father was standing there in that Montana country kitchen with his beautiful younger woman threatening him on my behalf. She was willing to tell me what he wouldn’t. She did tell me.”
“About that,” he says, pulling me in front of him, my back to the person in line in front of us. “What exactly did she tell you, Carrie?”
“That my father did some dirty deals and yours did, too. That ultimately my father was afraid he was about to be exposed and he used you to escape his role in West Enterprises before that happened. It shakes me to the core to hear those things. I didn’t think he was dirty. At all. I had no indication that he was anything but honorable and honest.”
“We all want to believe that our parents live up to the standards they want us to live up to. I knew my father was a bastard,” he says. “But I didn’t know he was capable of the things he did. And I damn sure didn’t think he’d connect my name to those things.”
“I won’t ask what things.”
His jaw sets hard but his eyes hold mine, his stare unwavering. “I’ll tell you. Just not here. Not now. You deserve to know before you marry me.”
I know whatever this is, whatever his father did and put his name on, was bad. Really bad. And yet he’s willing to tell me. My father didn’t admit his sins to me, but he told Stella. His new woman ranked higher than his daughter. That hurts, but I focus on Reid, on the man I love. I push to my toes and kiss him, silently telling him how much his trust means to me. “Whatever it is, it changes nothing between us,“ I assure him and move on before he has time to doubt me. “I just can’t believe, knowing what I know of my father now, of the depth of the war between our families, that you agreed to hand over your stock
if you broke the agreement.”
“The war was always between your father and my father. I did what I did, because that war was poison. It needed to end, and I had no reason to ever break that deal I made with your father. I had no reason to break my vow of silence over your father’s exit from the company. Not until I met you.” He pulls me to him, his forehead resting on mine. “Every time you talked about wanting no secrets between us, it gutted me.”
My hand settles on his chest. “You thought I’d confront him if you told me.”
“I thought you’d believe you could convince him to forgive the deal.”
I lean back to look at him. “I would have, and after the conversation I had with him in Montana, I would have been wrong. I’m glad you held back. You saved us.” I wave my hand. “Enough about my father.” And since the line still isn’t moving, I ask, “Are we still going to Paris for Christmas?”
“Unless you’d rather go somewhere else,” Reid says, stroking my hair. “It’s beautiful around Christmas time,” he adds. “Paris goes all out for the holidays and I’d loved to share that with you.”
“What about Gabe and Cat? Don’t you spend Christmas with them?”
“Since Reese and Cat got married, we’ve been going to their place.”
“Before that?”
“It varied. I made a habit of getting out of town.”
“Alone?”
“Yeah, baby. Alone. The holidays are about family and commitment and you know how I felt about those things. I didn’t want anyone seeing anything I did as an invitation to get closer to me.”
Because of his girlfriend’s murder. Because of how much he blamed himself. Because he didn’t want anyone to love him enough to take a bullet for him again. “We had a good Thanksgiving at your sister’s place,” I remind him.
“I’m not running away from family. Not anymore. Not now that I have you. I just want us to have a special first Christmas together. And—”
The line moves forward, and a guard hurries us toward the exit posts, forcing Reid to hold back whatever else he was about to say, but it’s not a subject I’m allowing us to close. I love his sister and I think they need to mend their relationship after years of him pushing her away. They’re getting there, too. They’ve made progress in their relationship, and one thing I know for certain is that he has regrets where she’s concerned. My future husband is damaged in ways I never imagined possible, and I know Cat can’t either. She doesn’t know why he’s acted like an ass and it’s not my place to tell her about the shooting but I believe there are ways that I can help her see that there is more to her brother than meets the eye. He’s not the asshole he made me, or her, believe.
We finally clear customs and Reid drapes his arm around my shoulder. I want to bring up the holiday again, but I decide we have time to talk about this later. Right now, I just want to revel in the fact that not only are we together, we’re getting married. We’re also in Japan to celebrate and complete an absolutely huge deal we’ve closed for Grayson Bennett’s company, which means for our two family firms, as well. Our partnering to close this deal for both companies, is bringing the families together even if our fathers don’t want them to be together.
We’ve just passed through the doors that lead to baggage claim and I’m eager to get out of here. The hotel is calling us. We need to rest and I want to show Reid how much I love my ring properly, preferably without clothes. That goal is suddenly waylaid as an unexpected, but familiar visitor stops in front of us and forces us to halt.
My brother, looking tall, dark and arrogant in one of his outrageously expensive suits, his handsome faces schooled in judgment, stops directly in front of us.
“Anthony,” Reid greets coldly identifying him despite never having met him. He holds me close, making a clear statement: She’s mine and fuck you. And I don’t blame him. Anthony tried to ruin him and us in all kinds of devious ways.
“You,” Anthony says, his green eyes piercing Reid’s. “I didn’t think you’d make it. I thought she’d kick you to the curb.”
“Because you sent me that document that made it seem like he was trying to destroy West Enterprises?” I challenge. “I know the truth behind that document and I mean everything. I went to see dad and he and Stella told me the truth.” I hold up my hand and show him my ring. “Reid and I are getting married. He has been a part of making you a lot of money. Thank him because you owe him and then congratulate us.”
“I owe him all right,” Anthony says, still looking at Reid. “For the hell he put dad through.” His gaze cold and hard, shifts to mine. “Obviously, you don’t need an escort. I’ll leave you to your fiancée.” He turns and walks away.
Reid turns me in his arms and cups my face. “Carrie, baby—”
“I’m okay. It’s okay.” My hands go to his face. “My father pretended to be perfect. Anthony never did. I know what he is. I know who he is, but that’s exactly why I’m worried he’s going to come at you in some way.”
“I’ll handle it if he does.”
“Another war?” I challenge.
“I won’t let it become that. I promise you, Carrie.”
I believe him. I trust him. “Can we just go back to talking about a kitty and a pooch? Our kitty and pooch?”
“Soon.” He kisses me. “But I have more to say about this situation with your brother, just not here, not now.” He takes my hand. “Come on. Let’s get out of here.”
More to say. After all I know about my father now, more can’t be good and that thought has me squeezing Reid’s hand a little tighter and regretting the moment he lets me go to grab our bags off the conveyors. By the time we’re rolling them toward the exit, I come back to us. We’re here, we’re celebrating success and marriage, and I’m not letting my brother blow that.
Once we’re outside, there’s a hired car waiting on us, a limo actually, and I smile at Reid. “A limo?”
“I just proposed, and you said yes. We’re riding in style.”
I laugh. “You didn’t think you were proposing right now, did you?”
“I knew this trip was headed there.”
The driver opens the back door and Reid ushers me into the shelter of the car and the comfort of a cushy leather seat. He follows and soon we’re shut inside with the divider between us and the driver sealed. Reid pulls me close, his fingers tunneling into my hair before he says, “Ever fucked in a limo, baby?” and before I can answer, his mouth closes down on mine and he’s crazy, hot kissing me.
CHAPTER TWO
Carrie
“Well?” Reid challenges, his lips parting mine after a scorching kiss. “Have you ever fucked in a limo?”
“No,” I say, my hand flattening on his really hard and perfect chest, while my sex clenches in denial of my rejection about to follow. “I have not and I’m not starting now. Have you?”
“No,” he says. “Which makes it all the better that I do it with you. The only woman I plan to ever fuck again in this lifetime.” He kisses me and his hand slides under my shirt and over my breast.
“We paid a lot of money for this private limo,” he says. “Let’s enjoy it.”
“We?” I ask, catching his hand under my shirt but it does no good to stop him. His fingers shove down the lace of my bra.
“Yes. We. What’s mine is yours and just to be clear, you’re mine now.” He latches onto my nipple with his fingers and I moan with the sweet friction.
“Reid,” I whisper huskily.
“More, baby?” He rolls me to my back onto the long leather seat and then comes down on top of me. “You want my mouth on your nipple?”
“Stop,” I warn, clenching my thighs to no avail. His big body is separating them, and both of us have a leg dangling off the seat. “We can’t—”
He kisses me again, a deep, drugging kiss, while his hand squeezes my breast, and his thick cock nestles against my sex. I moan and he presses his cheek to mine, his lips at my ear. “I do believe you need my mouth on your nippl
e right now.”
“Reid,” I hiss, but it’s too late. He’s dragging my shirt up and over my head, tossing it aside and almost immediately his mouth is on one of my nipples, suckling, and licking. “What if—”
He kisses me. “I paid for privacy.”
I push on his chest. “We’re in Japan. How do you know you really paid for privacy?”
“It’s Japan, baby. They respect agreements here, more than Americans.” He kisses me again and his hand slides around my backside, squeezing and lifting me against him. “Maybe I should spank you right here.”
“No!” I say urgently, shoving on his chest again. “Not a chance in hell.”
He laughs low and sexy. “But I can fuck you?”
“Are you really trying to negotiate right now?” I challenge.
“I’m just trying to get inside my future wife.” He strokes a lock of hair from my face, his expression softening, his voice tender now. “Wife, Carrie. I never thought I’d call anyone that. I never thought I’d want anyone like that.”
My heart squeezes. “Husband,” I whisper. “From asshole to husband. I never—”
“You changed me, Carrie. You. Just you. And I need you to know that I will protect you. That I will never hurt you.”
My fingers splay on his cheek and I know he’s thinking of the girlfriend that gave up her life for him. “Reid, you can’t walk around afraid for me. That’s not living.”
“I will protect you,” he promises, his tone guttural, as if I haven’t even spoken, his mouth covering mine in a deep kiss, before he returns to my nipple, this time I don’t fight the pleasure. He needs this right now. Maybe I do, too. I arch into the intimate touch of his lips, his tongue, into the taut pull of his teeth against my nipple. My fingers dive into his blond hair but he moves down my body, his lips on my belly, his tongue flickering into my belly button even as he unsnaps my jeans.
This jolts me and I grab his hand, lifting my head to look at him. “Are you sure we’re safe in here?”
Those beautiful blue eyes of his meet mine. “I promise, baby. No one will interrupt us.”
