The Big Game

The jumper half hoped that the dragon would eat Daniel, and it would be over. He hadn’t been the one to bring dragons to this world. That had been the one before him, but the jumper thought that dragons didn’t offer much in the way of value to the land.

The whole situation was fraught with complications and tribulations. His meager efforts to keep the children safe were a bandage on the situation, and the jumper had to wonder, yet again, if what he was doing was the right path. Ivy had sensed him, had seen him, which was a first. He’d never been seen or sensed unless he’d wanted to be. Still, he had kept them safe with the Bigfoot of Yellowstone and away from the roaming wendigo.

Then the white wolf, his faithful friend, had agreed to help and guide the children in his stead. It was, to his way of thinking, the best solution. The wolf was a refugee to this world, from another that was long gone now, lost to the collision of stars and the ravages of nature. He was the last of his kind, set to live out his long life here, in this dimension.

The jumper could not go back in a timeline to fix his mistakes. He often lamented that it was the weakness to his powers. He couldn’t undo the damage of bringing the scientist from the world where he was persecuted and hunted for his brilliance and melding of magic into science. Still, his meddling had caused so much damage that the jumper wished he could snap his fingers and undo what had been done.

At least he knew that the scientist would never create the elixir again. He had seen to that personally.

The children were all that mattered now, and the Guard worked tirelessly, though not totally selflessly, to see to their safety. He thought about Simon and grimaced in annoyance. The head of the Guard had his own motivations, but refused to see the whole picture. But that was a problem for another day. For now, he would have to be careful around the children, especially Ivy. They seemed to be gaining in power rapidly, and it would not do for him to be detected.

Not if he wanted his plans to succeed, anyway.
