He put a finger to my lips. “You're taking me in. I know.”
But we both knew I wouldn't. I wanted him, needed him, too much for that.
It being so late, the road ahead was empty and silent except for the purr of Brett's bike. Even though we weren't flying down the highway anymore, I held my arms around him and nested my head between his shoulders.
“You were a pretty good racing partner,” he said softly. “Maybe I'll have you along next time, too.”
“Next time? After what happened tonight, you would go through this again?”
He shrugged. “I live for that rush. For me, it's like a drug, I guess. If I didn't get my next hit, I'd go crazy. It wouldn't be pretty.”
“Have you ever considered that maybe therapy would do you some good?”
My radio beeped. “Units, we still got some of those racers out there. We believe they're trying to escape off the side roads. All officers, be on the lookout for motorcyclists driving suspiciously.”
“It's not safe to head back yet. They've still got cars sweeping the area,” I told him. “Better find someplace to lay low. I can use the radio to know when they've called off the search.”
“Having a cop around sure does come in handy.”
“So you're just using me as a radar to make sure you don't get snagged.”
At the next red light, he actually bothered to stop. Across the road from that was a gas station, where two police cruisers sat in the parking lot. When Brett spotted the officers hanging out in their cars, he stiffened and put his head down.
“Turn green, damn it. C'mon...”
The growl of another motorcycle came up behind us fast. The bike whipped past us, blasting through the red light, with a couple of cars hot on his trail.
“That's Axel,” Brett cried.
“Pull over!” The officer yelled through his megaphone. “Hey, there's another one of them.”
“Go, Silver, or they've got us!”
He roared through the light after his friend. The cops at the gas station, who'd looked bored out of their skulls, eagerly joined the chase.
“Great. Now we got four of them on us.” He scanned for a place to hide. “It's going to be tougher to lose them out here. Might have to pull some more evasive maneuvers, so don't you dare let go of me.”
“Uh, I wasn't planning on it.”
We zipped through the next intersection and caught up with Axel. The guy was panicking, swerving, his hands shaking and his brow covered in sweat. If he didn't slow down, he was going to crash for sure.
“Thanks a lot, man. I'd almost ditched them until you came along.”
“Shut up! I ain't gonna just sit there and let them take me in.” He looked behind him. “They're catching up. I say we split up. They can't chase us both.”
“How do you figure?” I asked. “There's four of them.”
“It's the best chance we got.”
Axel veered down a side street. One of the cars went for him while the rest stayed on us.
“Of course,” I muttered.
I'd honed my survival instincts after years on the squad, but never prepared for a situation like this. Okay, deep breaths. Don't freak out. Remain calm and in control.
“There!” I pointed to a narrow alleyway between two dilapidated buildings. “They won't be able to follow you through.”
He grinned. “Awesome idea. Hold on to me; it's gonna be a tight squeeze.”
We surprised the cops by braking suddenly, then shooting down the alley before they could figure out what we were up to. Then we raced into the darkness, free for the moment at least.
“Did it work?” He glanced back. “See anything?”
“For the love of God, just watch where you're going!”
The alley was little more than the width of a sidewalk, but Brett navigated it like an expert even at high speed. We jetted out the other end, then up the next hill, and made a few random turns into a wooded area.
He went off-road, then killed the engine and rolled us down a slope into a sheltered grove. There were no street lamps around here, so the only light came from the full moon overhead. It would be a fine hiding place. The guys would never think to check here.
We got off the bike and listened to the sirens wailing in the distance. Sounded like they were getting father away.
Brett started to laugh. He slumped against a tree and sat down in a patch of bluebonnets. He grabbed both my hands and tried to pull me down with him. At first I resisted, because this guy seriously had a knack for finding ways to piss me off.
But the way his blue eyes seemed to sparkle, the warmth of his skin and mine, how much this simple contact made me want him...
Finally, I relented and let him yank me into his lap. Right away, something very hard and very large greeted me.
“That was fun,” he announced.
“Fun? Do you realize how many ways that whole thing could have blown up in our faces?” I elbowed him in the chest. “If someone recognized me on the back of your bike, I'm done for.”
I tried being mad at him, but his hands on my tense shoulders felt so good. A bad boy who gave superb back rubs; what were the odds of that?
“No one saw. It's dark, and we were flying. You worry far too much.”
“I think worrying is the appropriate response to being chased by half the police department.”
“Y'know, I feel bad for you.” His fingers gently massaged my stiff neck. “Do you ever just relax and let go, or is work the only thing on your mind?”
“Of course it isn't.” I didn't tell him that he'd been in my thoughts a lot more than work lately. “What about you? Seems you spend more effort getting in trouble than doing your job.”
“Maybe it looks that way to you, but just ask my boys at the station. Minute a call comes in, I'm all business.”
It was unseasonably warm for an early spring night. A balmy breeze whipped through the canopy of trees. Crickets chirped; animals called out all around us. The aroma of fresh soil and wildflowers was one I'd not stopped to enjoy since I was a child.
“It's weird saying this after what just happened,” I told him. “But it's very peaceful out here.”
“Yeah, it is. When you spend your life in the city, away from nature, you almost forget places like this exist.” He nuzzled my neck. “It's kind of romantic, don't you think?”
“As if you, of all people, know anything about romance.”
“I know enough to impress a woman.” His lips found that magic spot on my collarbone. “Enough to get her into my bed.”
“You're the cockiest guy I ever met,” I murmured. “Are you seriously trying to get in my pants after what you've done?”
“I wouldn't call it cocky, just confident.”
And his confidence was majorly sexy to me. He had more of it than any man I'd known before – and unlike all of them, he had every right to brag.
His arms fell around my waist; he unzipped my pants with one easy tug.
“They're still hunting us out there,” I mildly protested. “This is stupid.”
He ignored me and slid his hand beneath the lace of my underwear. The massive rush of riding behind him, flying over rough terrain while running for our lives, made me so wet I soaked through the fabric.
“Care to explain this?” he asked, stroking my slit with a lone finger. Such as tease he was...
“What's there to explain?”
“You want this, don't you? More than you'll ever admit.” He kissed my neck as he slid into me. “You know how good this will be. You wanna be fucked like an animal.”
“S-Silver!”
He was right; I did want it.
Maybe this was just one night. Okay by me. After months without getting laid, a lifetime of crappy sex, Brett promised the pleasure I craved so very badly.
A second finger joined the first inside me. His skin was calloused, his thrusts rough and deep.
“Just imagine,” he whispered, “how it'll be with my cock inside you.”
r /> Oh, I imagined it real well. I'd felt him through his jeans, amazed at the size of him.
I had never slept with such a large man before. It would be a tight fit, probably somewhat painful.
Good.
“Have you ever had sex outside before?” he asked.
“No, I... I've never had the opportunity. And I've always been scared of getting caught.”
“But that's the thrill of it, isn't it? Knowing that at any second, someone could sneak up and catch you.” He gestured for me to stand. “I want you to undress for me. Oh, I've been looking forward to this since the moment we met.”
Despite my desire to have wild, kinky sex, and in spite of my take-no-shit demeanor on the job, I was shy. It was the reason I never asked for what I wanted, the reason I never dared to try the kinds of things you'd seen in a porno no matter how curious I was.
But Brett was different. This was just a fling, nothing serious. He was virtually a stranger. No need to care what he thought.
Because after tonight, I was sure, he'd be done with me. Moving onto the next pretty young thing who caught his eye.
May as well enjoy myself while I can, eh?
So I slid out of my pants, then my underwear, grateful for the cover of darkness. Brett whistled.
“You've shaved.”
I stroked my bare mound teasingly while he watched in awe.
“Did you shave for me, hmm?”
“Maybe.”
He growled, grabbed my ass, and pulled me to him. He buried his face between my thighs, tasted me, ate me out with such gusto I almost came within seconds.
“You're a naughty girl. I knew you were.” His tongue slivered between my lips. “But I wonder just how bad you can really be.”
I closed my eyes and stroked his wavy hair. “Pretty damn bad, apparently, when it comes to you.”
His fingers and mouth worked to bring me that release. I let myself moan and cry out loud, not caring if anyone heard me.
Out in the main road, not far away, the purr of a car's engine made me freeze. Brett kept right on kissing me, his smoky gaze never leaving mine.
“What if that's the cops?” I nudged him away. “How are we going to run with our pants down?”
“We'll have to be quick. That won't be a problem, will it?” He tugged at the zipper of his jeans. “I would have preferred to take you in bed, but you're so damn beautiful I can't wait another minute.”
Feeling him up through his boxers was one thing, but when he stripped naked for me, I found out how huge he really was.
He took a condom from his pocket and slipped it on. He'd come prepared. He had been expecting this.
He knew no matter what, he was going to have me tonight.
“The things I'd do to you if we had more time,” he murmured, rubbing against me from behind.
He didn't explain, but my mind went wild with erotic possibilities. His solid cock pressed into my backside, so close, teasing me until I ached to feel him deep inside me.
He pushed me against a tree and entered me fast and hard from behind. I gasped loudly as he rocked into me, sliding in an inch at a time with every thrust.
So much pleasure, laced with just a hint of pain... Perfect.
Brett kissed my neck the way he knew I loved it. His hand slid under my shirt, beneath my bra, and he rolled my hard nipple between his big fingers.
“You're very tight,” he whispered. “Am I hurting you?”
“A little. But I like it.”
He slapped my ass, the sound of it echoing loudly across the woods. Oh God, yes. No man had spanked me before, and I wanted more, harder...
If only I wasn't too shy to beg for it.
“I heard you whimpering. You like being spanked, don't you?”
“I... Yes.”
“That's good. You're a bad girl, aren't you? You need to be punished.”
His hand came down again, so hard it burned where he hit me.
I was in heaven.
He plowed into me so roughly, violently almost, each plunge carrying me closer to the peak.
And then car lights shone through the trees.
It was a police cruiser, rolling by slowly, looking for the racers who had gotten away.
“Brett, it's the cops,” I hissed. “We have to move.”
“Mm, no. I'm not moving anywhere until I'm done with you.”
He took me to the forest floor, behind some bushes, and put a hand over my mouth as he entered me again. I was so close, so eager for release, despite my terror at being caught.
The cruiser pulled to the side of the road, and an officer got out with a flashlight. “I'm checking out the west side,” he said into his radio.
Adrenaline flowed through my veins, the prospect of being discovered more arousing than I expected. This was dangerous, it was stupid, yet...
We couldn't speak, could barely even breathe. Brett's thrusts slowed as the officer approached.
The cop was so close, no more than ten feet away. If he just peeked behind the bushes, he would find us.
Then his radio came on. “We're calling off the search,” said a man. “Already nabbed seven of 'em. No telling how many were out there, exactly.”
“Ten-four.”
The cop turned and went back to his car. The moment his door shut, Brett plowed into me with abandon, pinning my arms behind my head and attacking my neck with nibbles and kisses.
I came within seconds, and Brett followed soon after. It was so good, so wild and primal. For the first time in maybe forever, I felt truly alive.
We lay there in the quiet, gazing up at the stars for a while after.
“That was too close,” I scolded him. “What if that cop found us?”
“But he didn't.” Brett grinned. “Tell me the truth – that was the most exciting sex you've ever had, hmm?”
“Yeah,” I admitted. “It was.”
But what happened now? Was this only for one night, or did he want more?
Because I definitely wanted more.
That was the lovemaking I'd dreamed of for so long, but had been too afraid to ask for. It just felt so natural with him, so right.
We dressed and drove back to the gas station where I'd left my car. The lot was empty now, no bikers or cops to be found.
“I, uh, had a good time,” he said as I got in. “Wasn't how I expected this night to go, but I'm not complaining.”
“You'd better lay off the racing for a while. They'll be on high alert after this.”
“Yes, officer.” He winked. “Guess I'll see you the next time our arsonist friend shows up.”
My heart sank. He didn't ask for my number. Didn't say we should do this again. To him, this really was a one-time thing.
And that hurt.
“I guess. Victor's told me to drop the investigation. To wait and see what the guy does.”
“What else can you do? It's not like you got any leads on him. All we know is he's crazy and he's got something against sinners, whatever that means.”
He kissed my cheek, told me good night, and rode off on his bike, leaving me alone.
It felt so wrong. After what we'd just done, after such an intense, emotional experience, he'd just drive off like it didn't happen?
“But what did you expect, Mad?” I laughed at myself. “It was only supposed to be one night. Get over it.”
So I tried, but I already knew it wasn't going to be that easy.
Chapter 9 - Brett
Sex had never been a real big deal to me. I wanted it; I went out and got it. In and out, take what I needed, move on.
But with Madison, it wasn't that simple.
Normally, I lost interest after I'd made the score. One night was enough for me.
Not this time. It'd been three days since that encounter with her in the woods, and I couldn't get her off my mind no matter how I tried.
A plush basketball flew over my desk and knocked me in the head. Jayce snickered from his spot across the room.
“You're totally out of it. What's gotten into you?”
I laughed and shook my head. “If only I knew.”
The station was bustling with activity, though there hadn't been a call for us today yet. That gave me plenty of time to ruminate on my feelings.
What had come over me? I usually wasn't so aggressive, so... violent, almost, with a woman. But her body language said she wanted it, and when I gave in, oh boy.
It felt good to spank her, to be rough with her. When she told me she liked it when I slapped her ass, I just lost it.
I had to have her again. The thought of sleeping with some other girl held no appeal anymore.
“Hey, Jayce,” I called to him. “You know that cop who showed up at the club? Madison?”
He grinned. “You screwed her, didn't you?”
“How the hell did you know?”
“You obviously had a thing for her; any idiot could see that. And everyone knows how you are – when you see a girl you want, you don't rest until you've nabbed her.”
“Guess you know me too well.”
“So why the weird look on your face?”
I kicked back in my chair and replayed the scene in my head for the hundredth time. “Sex with her wasn't like it is with those girls from the club. It was different. Special. That sounds stupid, but...”
“Oh.” His eyes widened. “I get it. You actually like this woman.”
I couldn't deny it. She was more than just a pretty face, more than a warm body to keep me company for the evening.
She was tough. Self-assured. Confident. Didn't put up with my bullshit. Didn't care about impressing me.
Unlike most of the women I'd banged, I respected her.
“This is how it starts, you know,” Jayce continued. “Exactly what happened to me with Elle.”
Cold fear ran through my veins. “What are you talking about?”
He gazed at the picture of her and his son, Ethan, on his desk. Once again, I felt that stab of jealousy that was really starting to make me nervous.
“I'd had a thing for her for years. When I finally got her, it was incredible. With her, sex wasn't just physical. I cared about her. Stopped wanting anyone else.”
“If you're trying to say I'm gonna marry this chick...”
“No, I'm not. I know you always say you don't want to settle down, but maybe give dating a try, huh?” He frowned. “I just don't like seeing you alone. The right woman can make your world a much better place.”
