Will you be alright? I mentally asked him.

“Of course I will. Will you?”

I sent him a sad smile and nodded before turning back and nuzzling into Emmett’s neck. We’d just made it to the door when Blake’s voice rang out.

  “Hey, Jennings!”

Emmett turned us around just in time for a flash to go off. When my eyes recovered enough to see the cell phone in Blake’s hands, I squirmed free of Emmett’s hold and raced toward Blake.

“Eric Blake, I swear to God if you show that picture to anyone, I’ll – oomf!” Emmett scooped me up in a fireman’s carry before I could finish my rant and started toward his car again.

“I’ll kick your ass from here to Sunday!” I shouted from my position hanging off Emmett’s shoulder.

Lucky for Eric Blake, my anger was partially tempered by the fact that I had an up close and personal view of Emmett’s delicious hiney. It wasn’t exactly the dramatic exit I had always dreamed of, but I couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief. Everyone was alive, the bad guy was dead and my handsome hero – who, for the first time, was not one of my older brothers – was carrying me off to safety.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

E.J. Whitmer is a young-ish professional from Iowa who spends her days working in marketing and design. After spending hundreds of evenings reading and dreaming of her own fictional characters, she decided to put them in writing.

When she’s not working or writing, she spends her free time cooking, crafting, attending sporting events, harassing her outrageously good-looking husband or playing with her cat, Capone, and Boston Terrier, Rowdie.

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

One of my biggest quirks is that I am never - ever - without a new, super exciting project. I am exceptionally good at starting projects and not finishing them. When I started this book, the majority of those who knew me wrote it off as yet another project to be abandoned in its infancy.

My Uncle Mike was not among those people. From the get-go, he was just as excited about it as I was. And while I am extremely thankful for his invaluable editing and input, I am even more thankful for his confidence in me.

Thank you to Romance Writers of America for offering numerous avenues of support; the best of which was pairing me with critique partners. My new friends and fellow authors Amy Stearman and Izzy James were amazing throughout this process and I am so thankful for all of their advice.

I also couldn’t have taken this plunge without my Beta fishies: Cally, Marissa, my mother Marilyn and my husband John. I love you all. Thank you for reading my horrible rough draft and loving me despite my quirks.
