“Paris,” I said. “Paris is lovely this time of the year. Surely, my dear, you can find at least one expat aristocrat there in dire need of your specialty, the sort of assistance that requires more than a modicum of discretion?”
“For you, my darling girl, I will find a hundred.” He pulled me close to him and kissed me. I was lost in the deliciousness of the moment when I felt something sharp prodding my back.
“Heavens, Mother,” I said, “don’t you know it is bad manners to use a parasol in the house? That is something that would never be tolerated at Anglemore Park.”
She frowned, but lowered the parasol. It was a small victory, yet one I would gladly take.
