His voice was calmer than it had been the last few times we had spoken, and the familiar reserved tone echoed around the small room. I waited for a long moment, unable to speak.
“Hello?” he repeated. “Who is this?”
“Karl, it's me.”
“Enim?” He stopped short and grappled with the phone, pulling it closer as he listened for me to speak. “Enim, are you alright? I've been worried, I've been calling – Where are you?”
“I … I'm on Bardom Island.”
“You're – what are you doing there?” he asked, but I didn't answer him.
“Karl, I … I want you to come get me,” I said. “I'm ready to come home.”
