Refusing to talk to a lawyer and trying to explain away the mounting evidence against him, Danny is officially charged in the murder of Nick Millian and Janine Sato.
The following Monday, he's in jail awaiting trial for kidnapping his fiancée and taking her hostage.
Katherine Harris is extremely pleased with the evidence that we have, but we’re still a long way away from a trial date and a conviction even though the evidence is strong and hard to argue with.
"You did a good job,” Captain Medvil says, stopping by my desk as I gather my things. "Why don't you take a few days off? Go up to the mountains and check on your sister."
"Thanks. That's exactly what I want to do."
While I was busy at work here, Luke investigated the tattoo shop and talked to Cameron, his father, and his brother who all denied the fact that Violet worked there.
They basically stonewalled him. I want to go back up there and get some more answers if possible.
My phone rings just as I'm about to get in the car.
It's Luke.
We have plans to meet up for dinner tonight and I can't wait to see him again after all this time apart.
After closing this case and passing it on to the prosecutor, I finally have something to celebrate.
"I can't do tonight," Luke says as I look at him closer over FaceTime.
"What are you talking about? Why?"
"They're calling me up north tonight. Three young boys are missing in California City. They need extra manpower."
"What about Violet and Natalie?"
He shakes his head.
"What about the tattoo shop and everything that you found out?"
"There's no evidence that she worked there. They're refusing to cooperate and the case is going cold."
"No, don't say that," I say, pointing my finger in his face. "It's not going cold." A cold case means we’re giving up.
"Obviously, it's not officially cold, but there are no other leads. There's nowhere else to go. It has taken a back burner to new cases and my boss tells me I have to go to California City. What can I do?"
I shake my head. I need to get up there. I need to investigate whatever is going on. I need to find answers. Maybe talk to people who are only willing to talk to me.
"You should come up here and interview more of her friends. Maybe talk to the tattoo shop again,” Luke suggests.
“It could be nothing.” I shrug.
“It could be everything, but I can’t stay,” Luke says, shaking his head. "Let me just go to California City. I'll start working that case and I'll be in touch. Maybe I can get a few days off and drive back. I want to see you again."
"I want to see you, too," I whisper.
"Don't give up. There's always something to uncover.”
I nod and hang up.
Later that evening when I am licking my wounds, so to speak, and drinking a little bit too much wine, celebrating the closing of the case all by myself, my phone rings. It’s Lynn Wrasel, Violet's friend.
"Cameron's dead," she says almost immediately after I answer. "I went to talk to him again because he was lying to the FBI and he disappeared. His dad, Mr. Shapinsky, was freaking out. He came to talk to us. He went to the cops. They just found his body.”
