I don’t love him, either. I never did. And I never will.
‘He is your father,’ a girl—a girl I loved—said to me once. “He loves you, in his way.”
I shake my head, turning away from my father, and the memory of her. I don’t like to think of her, even less than I like to think about my mama. I let them both down, long ago, when it mattered most. But together, they taught me who I really was: a giver of pleasure, or pain, but never happiness. Never love. I will never again pretend to be anyone’s eroe, or lover, or son. Not for their benefit, and certainly not for mine.
For that lesson, I suppose I should be grateful.
***
After a week on the Shore, I am more relaxed than ever before.
But of course, it doesn’t last.
I return having met a man who I can actually call my friend. Zandor is very different from me, and from what he says so is his family. I like that. In the Steel family, there is no competition, no judgment, nothing but a good time. Zandor Steel is like a constant, one-man party. Hard to keep up with at times, but always entertaining.
Back home, I find less of a party, more of a militarized zone. I have returned to an angry father—no surprise there—and employees who are much more skittish than when I left them. Some of the girls, the ones I found in bad situations, seem to have reverted to the way they were before—jaded and scared. I felt a responsibility to help them before, and now that someone has undone my work, I am furious. If it is my father’s doing, I decide I will be the one to make him pay.

How to Tie The St. Andrews Knot
-The wide end of the tie should be on your right side and the other end on your left. The tie should be inside out.
- Cross the narrow end over the other end. (Now three regions)
- Bring the wide end over the narrow end. (Left and right region)
- Bring the wide end under the knot from the right to the left region.
- Bring the wide end over the center.
- Bring the wide end underneath the tie knot from right to left.
- Bring the wide end under the narrow part of the tie from left region to center.
- Bring the wide end down and pass the loop in front. Make sure the knot is tightened.
- Use one hand to pull the narrow end down and use the other hand to move the knot up until it reaches the center of the collar.
