Friendzoned Soprano

Major newspapers ran feature articles about me, not that I cared all that much anymore. Salzburg eventually caved, too, and invited me to sing Tosca—as a belly dancer. I looked fabulous in a very brief costume with a jewel in my navel, and the critics agreed that I sang even better than fabulous.

I lost fifty more pounds. I’d like to say it was easy, but it continued to be a struggle I faced daily. Sometimes, I called Sean from halfway around the world just to draw strength and encouragement from him. To hear him say silly, suggestive words that showed his love for me and encouraged me to be strong one more hour. His love gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I would never be a skinny thing, but I was at a healthy weight now. Best of all, the temptation to binge had slowly leached away.

Three years after Sean and I became lovers, he reminded me that we had pinky sworn to get married once our engagement was up. Always the joker, he pulled out an engagement ring from the queen’s stolen jewelry box during a dress rehearsal of Don Carlo and totally broke character to go down on one knee and ask me to marry him. I said yes and the whole house cheered.

We promptly did the deed and celebrated our newly married state by getting me pregnant. Unlike Tosca and her Mario, or Tosca and her Scarpia, Sean and I found our happy ending.
