The Last to Know

“You afraid of a Mexican jail?”
“Most intelligent people are. You know the ones that can form abstract thought.”
“Guess that counts me out. Now, I smell food.” With a slap to the bed, Monty snatched his cowboy boots from the floor and walked out to the kitchen after a quick stop by the bathroom. “Well, shit.”
Sitting at the table next to his cousin, Clayton, was Savannah Georgio. Her long midnight colored hair was tied back against her neck and her deep blue eyes blinked back a bit of surprise.
“Now, how did you get back here?” Monty asked while looking at Sunny and Miles who were pouring cereal. “Or did I miss the story of love and loss?”
“Maggie brought me,” Savannah said as she put her hand over Clay’s.
“You’re stayin’ then?” he asked.
“Yep, just not at the Winston’s ranch.”
“Does this mean we can’t keep callin’ you the Winston Bastard? I liked that.”
“How about Savannah?” Clay suggested with a deep growl.
“Now, that all depends. Is that Savannah Georgio or Long?”
“And I need to take a shower.” Savannah stood and left the room with her hand trailing across Clay’s shoulders.
“I think she wants you to join her,” Monty said when he heard the spray start. “Where’s the bacon?”
“Savannah ate it all.” Clay gave a half smile. He only had half a face at the moment, since his normally chocolate skin had darkened, purpled and swollen from being jumped the night before.
“And you expect us to open our home to a woman like that? A bacon eating—”
“Watch your next word,” Clayton warned. “I’m discovering and affinity for that woman and I intend to see it to the end.”
“And another bachelor bites the dust,” Miles grumbled as he sat down at the table. “Between JT, Sunny and Clay I wonder what is goin’ on with the men at Long Ranch. I’d say it was the water, but JT’s been stupid for Betsy since before Federated poisoned everything around here.”
“That might just be what we need,” Monty spoke up.
Immediately, all three guys stared over at him confused.
“Come again, my brother from another,” Sunny said as he sat his lily white ass next to Miles at the table. Although white and a Parker, Sunshine had been a brother to the Long boys, well before he started dating Mel.
“All the guys are hooking up, which means we are in need of a bachelor party.”
The guys gaped at Monty as if he were a moron.
“JT’s getting hitched in what…three weeks? Mexico is calling. Plus, Walt will never be allowed to come, so we’ll have a lawyer on speed dial if shit goes sideways.”
Miles leaned over to Sunshine. “I’m really worried because that fool is actually making sense.”
“I know, right,” Sunny replied as if their conversation was just between the two of them. “But this could fuck up my own bachelor party in the future.”
“Aw, Mel will forget about this, once you bat those baby blues and take off your shirt, just remember to flex when you do it. You know that stupid V thing by your hips makes girl brains go numb.”
“True, I do have that going for me, but that also means we need JT to go along.”
“Minor detail,” Monty said as he found his phone on the charger and remembered there was no cell service this far out. “I’ll call him when we get to town.”
A car rumbled down the hill toward the cabin. Monty looked through the old lace curtains that had once been at the main house and ran his hand over his head.
“Walt?” his brother asked.
“Worse,” Monty groaned. “MeMaw. I swear that woman has a six sense when it comes me to trying’ to have fun.”
